Surah Al-Furqan (The Criterion) — سورة الفرقان - **Verse:** 18 / 77 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 360 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-furqan/verse-18 ## Arabic قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنْبَغ۪ي لَـنَٓا اَنْ نَتَّخِذَ مِنْ دُونِكَ مِنْ اَوْلِيَٓاءَ وَلٰكِنْ مَتَّعْتَهُمْ وَاٰبَٓاءَهُمْ حَتّٰى نَسُوا الذِّكْرَۚ وَكَانُوا قَوْماً بُوراً ## Transcription Qaloo subhanaka ma kanayanbaghee lana an nattakhitha min doonika min awliyaawalakin mattaAAtahum waabaahum hattanasoo aththikra wakanoo qawman boora ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley they will say, ‘Glory be to You! It would not have been fitting for us to have taken any protectors apart from You. But You let them and their fathers enjoy themselves so that they forgot the Reminder. They were people devoid of good.’ ### Progressive Muslims They said: "Glory be to You, it was not for us to take besides You any allies; indeed You gave them and their fathers luxury until they forgot the remembrance, and they were a lost people. " ### Shabbir Ahmed They will say, "Glory to You! It was not befitting for us that we should take for protecting masters others than Yourself. But You did bestow on them and their ancestors, good things in life to the extent that they disregarded the Reminder and became a lost folk." ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They will say: “Glory be to Thee! It behoved us not to take, besides Thee, any allies! But You allowed them to enjoy, together with their parents. Consequently, they disregarded the message and thus became wicked people." ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They will answer: "Glory to You. It was not worthy of us to seek any protector other than You. But You allowed them and their fathers a life of ease until they turned oblivious of the Reminder. They were a people impenitent. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined." ### Muhammad Asad They will answer: "Limitless art Thou in Thy glory! It was inconceivable for us to take for our masters anyone but Thyself! But [as for them -] Thou didst allow them and their forefathers to enjoy [the pleasures of] life to such an extent that they forgot all remembrance [of Thee]: for they were people devoid of all good. " ### Marmaduke Pickthall They will say: Be Thou Glorified! it was not for us to choose any protecting friends beside thee; but Thou didst give them and their fathers ease till they forgot the warning and became lost folk. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They will say: "Glory be to You! It did not behove us to take any other than You as our guardians, but You lavished the pleasures of life upon them and their forefathers until they forgot the Admonition and became doomed to destruction."[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, they were mean people: You gave them all the provisions of life so that they may show gratitude to You, but they became ungrateful and ignored all the admonitions given by the Prophets. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab " Glory be to you. "O Allah", they shall say, and extolled are Your glorious attributes. How could we! when it is not at all befitting to take tutelary guardians besides You! The truth is that you O Allah granted these people together with their fathers comfort and enjoyment and all that advantaged them of Your blessings in life until they forgot to apply remembrance to You and became oblivious of divine revelation. And by consequence they had sealed their own fate and deserved destruction. ### Bijan Moeinian They will say, "Glory to you, it was not right for us to pretend that we are like You. You allowed them, as well as their parents, to make choices of their own. They [abused their freedom of choice] and disregarded the Message. Thus they turned into wicked people." ### Al-Hilali & Khan They will say: "Glorified be You! It was not for us to take any Auliyâ’ (Protectors, Helpers) besides You, but You gave them and their fathers comfort till they forgot the warning, and became a lost people (doomed to total loss). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They will say: "Glory to Thee! not meet was it for us that we should take for protectors others besides Thee: But Thou didst bestow, on them and their fathers, good things (in life), until they forgot the Message: for they were a people (worthless and) lost." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They will say, "Glory be to You! It was not right for ˹others like˺ us to take any lords besides You,[1] but You allowed enjoyment for them and their forefathers ˹for so long˺ that they forgot ˹Your˺ remembrance and became a doomed people." ### Taqi Usmani They will say, "Pure are You. It was not for us to adopt other guardians than You. Instead, You gave them and their fathers (worldly) benefits till they forgot the advice, and became a ruined people." ### Abdul Haleem They will say, ‘May You be exalted! We ourselves would never take masters other than You! But You granted them and their forefathers pleasures in this life, until they forgot Your Reminder and were ruined.’ ### Arthur John Arberry They shall 'Glory be to Thee! It did not behove us to take unto say, ourselves protectors apart from Thee; but Thou gavest them and their fathers enjoyment of days, until they forgot ### E. Aziz And on the day when He will gather them and that which they served beside Allah, He will say, "Was it you who misled these my servants or did they themselves wander from the way?" ### Mahmoud Ghali selves any patrons apart from You; but You gave them and their fathers enjoyment until they forgot the Remembrance and were a spoiled people. " ### George Sale They shall answer, God forbid! Seni bırakıb da başka veliler edinmemiz bize yakışmaz. Fakat (gerek) onları (n) ve (gerek) ataları (nın azab müddetlerini) kendin uzatdın da nihayet zikri unutdular ve helak (e mahkum) bir kavm oldular". ### İbni Kesir Onlar da derler ki: Tenzih ederiz, Seni bırakır da başka dostlar edinmek bize yaraşmaz. Ama Sen, onlara ve babalarına nimetler verdin de, Seni anmayı unuttular ve helaki hak eden bir kavim oldular. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Onlar: "Sınırsız kudret ve yüceliğinle Seni tenzih ederiz!" diye cevap verecekler, "Senden başka dostlar, efendiler edinmek bize yakışmazdı! Fakat, (bunlara gelince) Sen bunlara ve babalarına dünya hayatının tadını çıkarmaları için fırsat verdin; öyle ki, onlar da sonunda (Seni) anmayı büsbütün unuttular; çünkü bunlar her türlü iyilikten yoksun kimselerdi". ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Onlar da derler ki: -Seni tenzih ederiz, senden başka veliler edinmek bize yaraşmaz.
