Surah Al-Fath (The Victory) — سورة الفتح - **Verse:** 12 / 29 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 511 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-fath/verse-12 ## Arabic بَلْ ظَنَنْتُمْ اَنْ لَنْ يَنْقَلِبَ الرَّسُولُ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ اِلٰٓى اَهْل۪يهِمْ اَبَداً وَزُيِّنَ ذٰلِكَ ف۪ي قُلُوبِكُمْ وَظَنَنْتُمْ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِۚ وَكُنْتُمْ قَوْماً بُوراً ## Transcription Bal thanantum an lan yanqalibaarrasoolu walmu/minoona ila ahleehimabadan wazuyyina thalika fee quloobikum wathanantumthanna assaw-i wakuntum qawman boora ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley No, you thought that the Messenger and the muminun were not going to return to their families, and that seemed pleasing to your hearts and you thought evil thoughts and you were a blighted people. ### Progressive Muslims Alas, you thought that the messenger and the believers would not return to their families, and this was deemed pleasant in your hearts, and you thought the worst thoughts; you were a wicked people. ### Shabbir Ahmed Nay, you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never come back to their folk and families. You are a people lost. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) But you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, ever, and that was made pleasing in your hearts. And you assumed an assumption of evil and became a people ruined." ### Muhammad Asad Nay, you thought that the Apostle and the believers would never return to their kith and kin: and this seemed goodly to your hearts. And you entertained [such] evil thoughts because you have always been people devoid of all good!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall Nay, but ye deemed that the messenger and the believers would never return to their own folk, and that was made fairseeming in your hearts, and ye did think an evil thought, and ye were worthless folk. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary (But the truth is not what you say.) You had imagined that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, and this notion was embellished in your hearts.[1] You harboured an evil thought, and you are an immensely evil people."[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, you were delighted to think that you had saved yourselves from the danger into which the Messenger (peace be upon him) and his believing supporters were going. You thought you had done so by dint of your great wisdom; and you also did not feel any compunction in rejoicing at the thought that the Messenger (peace be upon him) and the believers would not return alive from their expedition. You did not feel uneasy in spite of your claim to the faith but were pleased to think that you did not put yourselves in the danger by accompanying the Messenger (peace be upon him). - [2] The word ba-ir (pl. bur in the original) has two meanings: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab In effect you people thought that the Messenger together with the faithful believers should be caught in the jaws of death and never would they return back safe to their people. This mental anticipation allured your hearts by hopes of relief, and you hugged this evil thought to your hearts and you were a morally depraved people. ### Bijan Moeinian My prayer will not help you at all, if He decides to punish you. The fact of the matter is that you were proud of the wisdom of your action in saving yourselves from the danger into which Mohammad and his supporting believers were going. You are indeed a sinful doomed people." ### Al-Hilali & Khan "Nay, but you thought that the Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and the believers would never return to their families, and that was made fair-seeming in your hearts, and you did think an evil thought and you became a useless people going for destruction." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali "Nay, ye thought that the Messenger and the Believers would never return to their families; this seemed pleasing in your hearts, and ye conceived an evil thought, for ye are a people lost (in wickedness)." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The truth is: you thought that the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families again.
