Surah Al-Bayyinah (The Evidence) — سورة البينة - **Verse:** 4 / 8 · **Juz:** 30 · **Mushaf page:** 598 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-bayyinah/verse-4 ## Arabic وَمَا تَفَرَّقَ الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫تُوا الْـكِتَابَ اِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَةُۜ ## Transcription Wama tafarraqa allatheena ootooalkitaba illa min baAAdi ma jaat-humualbayyina ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who were given the Book did not divide into sects until after the Clear Sign came to them. ### Progressive Muslims And those who had previously received the Scripture did not divide except after the proof came to them. ### Shabbir Ahmed Now the People of the Scripture had divided among themselves even when the Evidence of Truth had already come to them. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And those given the Writ were divided only after the clear evidence had come to them. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And those who had previously received the Book did not divide except after the proof came to them. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament In fact, those who received the scripture did not dispute until the proof was given to them. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira The people of the Book were not divided among themselves till after the clear proof had come to them. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence. ### Muhammad Asad Now those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime did break up their unity [of faith] after such an evidence of the truth had come to them. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Nor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came unto them. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Nor did those to whom the Book had been given split up until after the Proof (of the Right Way) had come to them.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, the reason why the people of the Book before this were divided into countless sects because of different kinds of errors and deviation, was not that Allah had failed to send a clear evidence from Himself for their guidance, but the fact that they adopted the wrong way after guidance had come from Allah. Therefore, they themselves were responsible for their deviation, for Allah had fulfilled His obligation towards them. Likewise, since their scriptures are no longer pure and their books no longer consist of original and correct teachings, Allah by sending a Messenger of His, as a clear evidence, with a hallowed Book, containing sound and pure teachings, has again fulfilled His obligation towards them, so that even if after that they remained divided, they themselves should be responsible for it and should have no excuse left to plead before Allah. This has been stated at many places in the Quran, e.g. see ( Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayats 213, 253); (Surah Al-Imran, Ayat 19); (Surah Al-Maidah, Ayats 44-50); ( Surah Younus, Ayat 93); (Surah Ash-Shura, Ayats 13-15); (Surah Al-Jathiyah, Ayats 16-18), along with the corresponding notes for full understanding. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab But Ahl AL-Kitab only became divided after they had received this clear divine evidence- ### Bijan Moeinian As a matter of fact, those who received the older scriptures did not dispute about the message when it was revealed to them (it happened later when they started to tamper with the scriptures). ### Al-Hilali & Khan And the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) differed not until after there came to them clear evidence (i.e. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and whatever was revealed to him). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Nor did the People of the Book make schisms, until after there came to them Clear Evidence. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran It was not until this clear proof came to the People of the Book that they became divided ˹about his prophethood˺— ### Taqi Usmani And those who were given the Book did not disagree but after the clear proof came to them, ### Abdul Haleem [Yet] those who were given the Scripture became divided only after they were sent [such] clear evi-dence ### Arthur John Arberry And they scattered not, those that were given the Book, excepting after the Clear Sign came to them. ### E.
