Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 96 / 286 · **Juz:** 1 · **Mushaf page:** 14 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-96 ## Arabic وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ اَحْرَصَ النَّاسِ عَلٰى حَيٰوةٍۚ وَمِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ اَشْرَكُوا يَوَدُّ اَحَدُهُمْ لَوْ يُعَمَّرُ اَلْفَ سَنَةٍۚ وَمَا هُوَ بِمُزَحْزِحِه۪ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ اَنْ يُعَمَّرَۜ وَاللّٰهُ بَص۪يرٌ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ۟ ## Transcription Walatajidannahum ahrasa annasiAAala hayatin wamina allatheenaashrakoo yawaddu ahaduhum law yuAAammaru alfa sanatin wamahuwa bimuzahzihihi mina alAAathabi anyuAAammara wallahu baseerun bimayaAAmaloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Rather you will find them the people greediest for life, along with the idolaters. Any of them would love to be allowed to live a thousand years. But being allowed to live would not save him from the punishment. Allah sees what they do. ### Progressive Muslims And you will find them the most obsessive people regarding long life; as well as those who have set up partners; each one of them wishes that he could live a thousand years. It will not change for him the retribution even if he lived so long, God is watchful over what you do. ### Shabbir Ahmed and you will find them greediest of mankind for life, even greedier than the idolaters. Each one of them would like to be allowed to live a thousand years. And to live long would by no means save him from the suffering. For, Allah is Seer of what they accomplish. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And thou wilt find them the greediest of men for life. The one of them wishes to live a thousand years. But this will not spare him any retribution, no matter how long he lives. GOD is seer of everything they do. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira But they will surely not wish for death because of what they had done in the past; and God knows the sinners well. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do. ### Muhammad Asad And thou wilt most certainly find that they cling to life more eagerly than any other people, even more than those who are bent on ascribing divinity to other beings beside God: every one of them would love to live a thousand years, although the grant of long life could not save him from suffering [in the hereafter]: for God sees all that they do. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And thou wilt find them greediest of mankind for life and (greedier) than the idolaters. (Each) one of them would like to be allowed to live a thousand years. And to live (a thousand years) would by no means remove him from the doom. Allah is Seer of what they do. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary You will certainly find them most eager to cling on to life,[1] indeed even more eager than those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity. Each one of them wishes to live a thousand years although the bestowal of long life cannot remove him from chastisement. Allah sees whatever they do. _Footnotes_ - [1] The Arabic text implies that the Jews were so frightened of death and so keen to remain alive that they did not mind whether they led an honourable and dignified existence, or whether their life was one of indignity and humiliation. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab You shall find them, O Muhammad, of all people, the most eager, for longevity, even more than the Pagans, none of them aims for the grave but would rather be entangled in the web of life for a thousand years. But nothing shall alter his punitive destiny even if he is carried through the stealing steps of age to this desired advanced life span, and Allah is Bassirun (Omnipresent): He sees all that they do. ### Bijan Moeinian You (Mohammad) will find them (the Jews), of all the people, the most in love with this worldly life. They are in love with this world even more than the idol worshippers are in love with. They all wish to be given a thousand years life. [What they do not realize is that] Even if their wish is granted, they can not escape the punishment of God as He observes what they are doing. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And verily, you will find them (the Jews) the greediest of mankind for life and (even greedier) than those who ascribe partners to Allâh (and do not believe in Resurrection - Majûs, pagans, and idolaters). Everyone of them wishes that he could be given a life of a thousand years. But the grant of such life will not save him even a little from (due) punishment. And Allâh is All-Seer of what they do. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Thou wilt indeed find them, of all people, most greedy of life,-even more than the idolaters: Each one of them wishes He could be given a life of a thousand years: But the grant of such life will not save him from (due) punishment. For Allah sees well all that they do. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran You will surely find them clinging to life more eagerly than any other people, even more than polytheists. Each one of them wishes to live a thousand years. But even if they were to live that long, it would not save them from the punishment. And Allah is All-Seeing of what they do. ### Taqi Usmani You shall surely find them the more avid, for life than all other men - even more than the polytheists. Every one of them would love that his life is prolonged for one thousand years. But it will not take him away from punishment that his life is (so) prolonged, and Allah is watchful of what they do. ### Abdul Haleem [Prophet], you are sure to find them clinging to life more eagerly than any other people, even the polytheists. Any of them would wish to be given a life of a thousand years, though even such a long life would not save them from the torment: God sees everything they do. ### Arthur John Arberry and thou shalt find them the eagerest of men for life. And of the idolaters; there is one of them wishes if he might be spared a thousand years, yet his being spared alive shall not remove him from the chastisement. God sees the things they do. ### E. Tanrı, yaptıklarını / yapmakta olduklarını görendir. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Andolsun, sen onları (Yahudileri) insanlardan, (hatta) müşrik olanlardan ziyade hayaata düşkün bulacaksın. Onlardan her biri arzuu eder ki (kendisine) bin yıl ömür verilsin. Halbuki onun çok yaşatılması kendisini azabdan uzaklaşdırıcı değildir.
