Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 89 / 286 · **Juz:** 1 · **Mushaf page:** 13 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-89 ## Arabic وَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمْ كِتَابٌ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِمَا مَعَهُمْۙ وَكَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُواۚ فَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمْ مَا عَرَفُوا كَفَرُوا بِه۪ۘ فَلَعْنَةُ اللّٰهِ عَلَى الْكَافِر۪ينَ ## Transcription Walamma jaahum kitabunmin AAindi Allahi musaddiqun lima maAAahumwakanoo min qablu yastaftihoona AAala allatheenakafaroo falamma jaahum ma AAarafoo kafaroobihi falaAAnatu Allahi AAala alkafireen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When a Book does come to them from Allah, confirming what is with them – even though before that they were praying for victory over the kafirun – yet when what they recognise does come to them, they reject it. Allah’s curse is on the kafirun. ### Progressive Muslims And when a Scripture came to them from God, authenticating what is with them; while before that they were mocking those who rejected; so when what they knew came to them, they rejected it! God's curse be upon the rejecters. ### Shabbir Ahmed And when there comes to them the Book of Allah, confirming the authentic in what they have, they flatly deny it although before that they had been praying for a signal victory over those who denied all Divine Revelation. And whenever there came unto them something that they recognized as the Truth, they would deny it. Then, deprivation of Allah's grace is the lot of all those who thanklessly reject His Guidance and choose to live in darkness. ('Kufr' includes all the meanings given in the last sentence). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And when there came to them a Writ from God, confirming what was with them — and they before sought victory over those who ignore warning — then when there came to them what they recognised, they denied it; but the curse of God is upon the false claimers of guidance. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And when a Book came to them from God, authenticating what is with them; while before that they were mocking those who rejected; so when what they knew came to them, they rejected it! The curse of God be upon the rejecters. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament When this scripture came to them from GOD, and even though it agrees with, and confirms what they have, and even though they used to prophesy its advent when they talked with the disbelievers, when their own prophecy came to pass, they disbelieved therein. GOD's condemnation thus afflicts the disbelievers. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira And they say: "Our hearts are enfolded in covers. " In fact God has cursed them for their unbelief; and only a little do they believe. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when there came to them a Book from Allah confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah will be upon the disbelievers. ### Muhammad Asad And whenever there came unto them a [new] revelation from God, confirming the truth already in their possession-and [bear in mind that] aforetime they used to pray for victory over those who were bent on denying the truth -: whenever there came unto them something which they recognized [as the truth], they would deny it. And God's rejection is the due of all who deny the truth. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when there cometh unto them a scripture from Allah, confirming that in their possession - though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieved - and when there cometh unto them that which they know (to be the truth) they disbelieve therein. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And now that there has come to them a Book from Allah, how are they treating it? Even though it confirms the Truth already in their possession, and even though they had prayed for victory against the unbelievers, and yet when that Book came to them – and they recognized it – they refused to acknowledge its Truth.[1] Allah’s curse be upon the unbelievers. _Footnotes_ - [1] Before the advent of the Prophet, the Jews were eagerly awaiting a Prophet whose coming had been prophesied by their own Prophets. In fact, the Jews used to pray for his advent so that the dominance of the unbelievers could come to an end and the age of their own dominance he ushered in. The people of Madina were witnesses to the fact that these same Jewish neighbours of theirs had yearned for the advent of such a Prophet. They often used to say: 'People may oppress us today as they wish, but when our awaited Prophet comes, we will settle our scores with our oppressors.' Since the people of Madina had themselves heard such statements they were inclined to embrace the religion of the Prophet all the more readily lest their Jewish neighbours supersede them in acquiring this honour. It was therefore astonishing for them to find that when the promised Prophet did appear those same Jews who had so eagerly looked forward to welcoming him turned into his greatest enemies.The statement 'and they recognized it' is confirmed by several contemporaneous events. The most authentic evidence in this connection is that of Safiyah, a wife of the Prophet, who was herself the daughter of one learned Jewish scholar (Huyayy b. Akhtab) and the niece of another (Abu Yasir). She says that when the Prophet migrated to Madina both her father and uncle went to meet him and conversed with him for quite a while. When they returned home, she heard the following conversation: Uncle: Is he really the same Prophet whose advent has been prophesied in our Scriptures? Father: By God, he is. Uncle: Do you believe that? Father: Yes.. Uncle. Then what do you intend to do? Father: 1 will continue to oppose him and will not let his claim prevail as long as I live. Guillaume, London, Oxford University Press, 1955, pp. 241 f. - Ed.) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab When a Book was presented to them from Heaven, a Book, a treasure purposed to this life and life beyond, corroborating AL-Tawrah, they refused to accept it although it clearly foretold the Prophet Muhammad's coming; an event they had always been expecting and at times wishing it be hastened on to help them get the upper hand in argument and gain advantages in arguments and victories in wars over those who deny Allah. Yet when the prophesy was fulfilled and the Prophet Muhammad came with the Quran, they refused to acknowledge the truth of his mission. Consequently, Allah has consigned those who deny Him to misery and their homes shall be cursed. ### Bijan Moeinian Now that God has sent them this Book, which confirms their Scriptures, they deny it! Are these not the same people who were praying for a mean of victory over the disbelievers? Yet when it was sent to them, they recognized it and chose to disbelieve in it! The disbelievers are cursed by God. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when there came to them (the Jews), a Book (this Qur’ân) from Allâh confirming what is with them [the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], although aforetime they had invoked Allâh (for coming of Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) in order to gain victory over those who disbelieved, then when there came to them that which they had recognised, they disbelieved in it. So let the Curse of Allâh be on the disbelievers. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them,- although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith,- when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognised, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Although they used to pray for victory ˹by means of the Prophet˺ over the polytheists,[1] when there came to them a Book from Allah which they recognized,[2] confirming the Scripture they had ˹in their hands˺, they rejected it. So may Allah’s condemnation be upon the disbelievers. ### Taqi Usmani And when there came to them a Book from Allah, which confirms what was with them,- while earlier, they used to seek help against those who disbelieved, - yet when there came to them that which they did recognize, they denied it. So the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers. ### Abdul Haleem When a Scripture came to them from God confirming what they already had, and when they had been praying for victory against the disbelievers, even when there came to them something they knew [to be true], they disbelieved in it: God rejects those who disbelieve. ### Arthur John Arberry When there came to them a Book from God, confirming what was with them -- and they aforetimes prayed for victory over the unbelievers -- when there came to them that they recognized, they disbelieved in it; and the curse of God is on the unbelievers. ### E. Allah's curse is on the faithless. ### Mahmoud Ghali And as soon as a Book came to them from the Providence of Allah, sincerely (verifying) what was with them-and they earlies prayed for an opening (victory, conquest) over the ones who disbelieved-yet, as soon as there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allah is on the disbelievers. ### George Sale And when a book came unto them from God, confirming the scriptures which were with them, although they had before prayed for assistance against those who believed not, yet when that came unto them which they knew to be from God, they would not believe therein: therefore the curse of God shall be on the infidels. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them— Although from the past they had prayed for victory against those without Faith— When there comes to them that which they (should) have recognized, they refuse to believe in it. But the curse of Allah is on those without Faith. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And (now) when there has come to them the glorious Book from Allâh, fulfilling that (Prophecy) which is already with them, and previous to that they had been praying for victory over those who disbelieved, yet when that (long awaited Prophet and the Qur'ân) came to them which they recognised (also to be the truth), they disbelieved in it. (And because of this rejection) the disapproval of Allâh is the due for the disbelievers. ### Ali Quli Qarai And when there came to them a Book from Allah, confirming that which is with them —and earlier they would pray for victory over the pagans— so when there came to them what they recognized, they defied it.
