Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 58 / 286 · **Juz:** 1 · **Mushaf page:** 8 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-58 ## Arabic وَاِذْ قُلْنَا ادْخُلُوا هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةَ فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ رَغَداً وَادْخُلُوا الْبَابَ سُجَّداً وَقُولُوا حِطَّةٌ نَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطَايَاكُمْۜ وَسَنَز۪يدُ الْمُحْسِن۪ينَ ## Transcription Wa-ith qulna odkhuloo hathihialqaryata fakuloo minha haythu shi/tum raghadan wadkhulooalbaba sujjadan waqooloo hittatun naghfirlakum khatayakum wasanazeedu almuhsineen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Remember when We said, ‘Go into this town. and eat from it wherever you like, freely. Enter the gate prostrating and say, "Relieve us of our burdens!" Your mistakes will be forgiven. We will grant increase to all good-doers.’ ### Progressive Muslims And We said: "Enter this town, and eat from it as plentifully as you wish; and enter the gate while prostrating, and Say: "Our load is removed", We will then forgive your mistakes, and We will increase for the good doers. We will forgive you your sins and will increase (reward) for the right-doers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And recall when We said: "Go into this town[1] and eat abundantly of its food; but enter the gate prostrate, saying, “Repentance".[2]We will forgive you your sins and shall bestow more favour on the doers of good.” _Footnotes_ - [1] It has not yet been possible to arrive at any conclusion about the identity of the locality mentioned here. The series of events in the context of which God's command to enter the city is mentioned belong to the period of the exodus of the Children of Israel in the Sinai peninsula. It is therefore probable that the place mentioned in this verse is some Sinaitic city. Another plausible suggestion is that it is Shattim, which was located opposite Jericho on the eastern bank of the river Jordan. According to the Bible the Israelites conquered this town during the last years of the life of Moses. After the conquest the Israelites became so decadent that God smote them with a plague from which twenty-four thousand died (Numbers 25: 1-9). - [2] God's command was to enter the city not with the arrogance of tyrannical conquerors, but with the humility of men of God (in the manner in which the Prophet would later enter Makka at the time of its conquest). As for 'hit ' tah', it could either mean that when they entered the town they should seek God's pardon for their sins or that instead of plundering and massacring people in the wake of their conquest, they should proclaim an amnesty. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "Remember that once We extended Our mercy to you redeeming you from the wilderness. We said to you: "Make entry into this town –AL-Quds- and eat as you will, wherever you will; it is all replete with choice of all delights and enjoy all that is wholesome and affords pleasure. Humble yourselves and bow your knees to Me as you go through the gate and let your bosoms surge forth and answer thanks. Express your thoughts in words invoking Me to relieve your hearts and unload your burden of sins. We will forgive your iniquities and reward those whose deeds are imprinted with wisdom and piety with what runs higher than what corresponds with their piety" ### Bijan Moeinian Remember also when I said: "[Fight with the unjust habitants of Jerusalem, conquer and] Enter into the town [Jerusalem] where you will find as many provisions as you want. Enter the gate (of the town) bowing down with humility invoking God’s name and granting general amnesty (to the inhabitants after the conquest.) Then I will forgive your sins and reward you generously."
