Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 257 / 286 · **Juz:** 3 · **Mushaf page:** 42 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-257 ## Arabic اَللّٰهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُواۙ يُخْرِجُهُمْ مِنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ اِلَى النُّورِۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُٓوا اَوْلِيَٓاؤُ۬هُمُ الطَّاغُوتُۙ يُخْرِجُونَهُمْ مِنَ النُّورِ اِلَى الظُّلُمَاتِۜ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ اَصْحَابُ النَّارِۚ هُمْ ف۪يهَا خَالِدُونَ۟ ## Transcription Allahu waliyyu allatheena amanooyukhrijuhum mina aththulumati ilaannoori wallatheena kafaroo awliyaohumuattaghootu yukhrijoonahum mina annoori ilaaththulumati ola-ika as-habuannari hum feeha khalidoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Allah is the Protector of those who have iman. He brings them out of the darkness into the light. But those who are kafir have false gods as protectors. They take them from the light into the darkness. Those are the Companions of the Fire remaining in it timelessly, for ever. ### Progressive Muslims God is the ally of those who believe, He brings them out of the darkness and into the light. As for those who reject, their allies are the evil ones, they bring them out of the light and into the darkness; these are the people of the Fire, in it they will abide eternally. ### Shabbir Ahmed Allah becomes the Guarding Friend of those who, after due reflection, have chosen to believe in His Word (12:108). He brings them out of darkness into Light (through the Qur'an). Those who deny the Divine System of Life, have devilish human "authorities" as patrons to lead them from Light into darkness. Such people have chosen Fire to be their eternal companion. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation God is the ally of those who heed warning; He brings them out of darkness into the light. And those who ignore warning: their allies are idols; they bring them out of the light into darkness. Those are the companions of the Fire; therein they abide eternally. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation God is the ally of those who believe, He brings them out of the darkness and into the light. As for those who reject, their allies are the evil ones, they bring them out of the light and into the darkness; these are the people of the Fire, in it they will abide. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament GOD is Lord of those who believe; He leads them out of darkness into the light. As for those who disbelieve, their lords are their idols; they lead them out of the light into darkness - these will be the dwellers of Hell; they abide in it forever. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira God is the friend of those who believe, and leads them out of darkness into light; but the patrons of infidels are idols and devils who lead them from light into darkness. They are the residents of Hell, and will there for ever abide. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve - their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light into darknesses. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. ### Muhammad Asad God is near unto those who have faith, taking them out of deep darkness into the light - whereas near unto those who are bent on denying the truth are the powers of evil that take them out of the light into darkness deep: it is they who are destined for the fire, therein to abide. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Allah is the Protecting Guardian of those who believe. He bringeth them out of darkness into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities. They bring them out of light into darkness. Such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Allah is the Guardian of those who believe, He brings them out of every darkness into light.[1] And those who disbelieve, their guardians are the evil ones;[2] they bring them out of light into all kinds of darkness. These are destined for the Fire, and there shall they abide. _Footnotes_ - [1] The 'darkness' mentioned here means the darkness of Ignorance, which throws man off the path of salvation and well-being and directs his energies and efforts to wrong directions in defiance of reality. 'Light' here means the knowledge of Truth with the help of which man comes to know his own reality and that of the universe; this knowledge also shows him the purpose of his life, and thus leads him consciously, to adopt the Right Way. - [2] Here taghut see( n. 286) above has a plural connotation. It implies that by turning away from God a man is subjected not to the tyranny of one, but to the tyranny of many tawaghit (evil one). One of these is Satan, who throws up new temptations and allurements. Another potential taghut (transgressor) is man's own animal self, which seeks to subjugate him to his appetites and desires. There are many more taghut in the world outside oneself ; one's wife and children, one's relatives, one's family and one's community, one's friends and acquaintances, one's social environment and one's people, one's leaders and guides, one's government and rulers are all potential taghut, each one of whom seeks to have his purposes served. Man remains subjected to these innumerable masters throughout his life, not knowing precisely whom he should please and whose displeasure he should avoid. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Allah is the Guardian of those whose hearts truly believe spiritually. He guides them out of darkness and superstition of later times and out of want of spiritual and intellectual vision into illumination and mental enlightenment, whereas those who denied Allah are guided by the prince of darkness, or by those with Satanic characteristics, leading them out of light and driving them into darkness and want of spiritual and intellectual vision. Such persons shall be the inmates of Hell fire, their eternal abode. ### Bijan Moeinian God is the Lord of those who have chosen to believe; He takes them from the darkness to the light. He is as well the Lord of those who have chosen their idols (money, women, position, etc.) as their masters: The ones who have left the light and have taken refuge in the darkness. They are those who will abide in Hellfire forever. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Allâh is the Walî (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliyâ (supporters and helpers) are Tâghût [false deities and false leaders], they bring them out from light into darkness. Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever. (See V.2:81,82) ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: from the depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject faith the patrons are the evil ones: from light they will lead them forth into the depths of darkness. They will be companions of the fire, to dwell therein (For ever). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Allah is the Guardian of the believers—He brings them out of darkness and into light. As for the disbelievers, their guardians are false gods who lead them out of light and into darkness. It is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever. ### Taqi Usmani Allah is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out of the depths of darkness into the light. As for those who disbelieve, their friends are the Rebels. They bring them out from the light into the depths of darkness. Those are people of the Fire. There they will remain forever. ### Abdul Haleem God is the ally of those who believe: He brings them out of the depths of darkness and into the light. As for the disbelievers, their allies are false gods who take them from the light into the depths of darkness, they are the inhabitants of the Fire, and there they will remain. ### Arthur John Arberry God is the Protector of the believers; He brings them forth from the shadows into the light. And the unbelievers -- their protectors are idols, that bring them forth from the light into the shadows; those are the inhabitants of the Fire, therein dwelling forever. ### E. Henry Palmer God is the patron of those who believe, He brings them forth from darkness into light. But those who misbelieve, their patrons are Taghut, these bring them forth from light to darkness,- fellows of the Fire, they dwell therein for aye. ### Hamid S. Aziz Allah is the patron of those who believe, He brings them forth from darkness into light. But those who disbelieve, their patrons are false deities; these bring them forth from light to darkness. Such are fellows of the Fire, they will dwell therein. ### Mahmoud Ghali Allah is The Ever-Patronizing Patron of (the ones) who have believed. He brings them out of the darknesses into the light. And for (the ones) who have disbelieved, their constant patrons are the Taghût (i.e. false gods, idols, devils and seducers) who bring them out of the light into the darknesses; those are the companions of the Fire; they are therein eternally (abiding). ### George Sale God is the patron of those who believe; he shall lead them out of darkness into light: But as to those who believe not, their patrons are Tagut(false gods); they shall lead them from the light into darkness; they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall remain therein for ever. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Allah is the Protector of those who have faith: From the depths of darkness (from where) He will lead them into light. Of those who reject faith their friends are the false gods (and their false 'friends') from light they will lead them into the depth of darkness. They will be companions of the Fire, to dwell in there (for ever).] ### Amatul Rahman Omar Allâh is the Patron of those who believe, He brings them out of different kinds of darkness (leading them) into light. As for those who disbelieve, their patrons are the transgressors, they bring them out of light (and lead them) into every kind of darkness. It is these who are the fellows of the Fire, therein shall they live for long. ### Ali Quli Qarai Allah is the Guardian of the faithful: He brings them out of darkness into light. As for the faithless, their patrons are the Rebels, who drive them out of light into darkness. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever]. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Allah iman edenlerin Veliyy'idir; onları zulmattan (karanlıklardan - hakikat bilgisizliğinden) Nur'a (ilmin aydınlığında hakikati görmeye) çıkartır.
