Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 195 / 286 · **Juz:** 2 · **Mushaf page:** 29 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-195 ## Arabic وَاَنْفِقُوا ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِاَيْد۪يكُمْ اِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِۚۛ وَاَحْسِنُواۚۛ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِن۪ينَ ## Transcription Waanfiqoo fee sabeeli Allahi walatulqoo bi-aydeekum ila attahlukati waahsinooinna Allaha yuhibbu almuhsineen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Spend in the Way of Allah. Do not cast yourselves into destruction. And do good: Allah loves good-doers. ### Progressive Muslims And spend in the cause of God, but do not throw your resources to disaster. And do kindness, for God loves those who do kindness. ### Shabbir Ahmed (It is impossible for a greedy, stingy, niggardly person to grow in goodness. Greed, stinginess and hoarding harm the individual and the society). Spend your wealth in the Cause of Allah, and let not your own hands throw you into destruction. Rather, be consistent in benefiting your fellow human beings. Allah loveth the beneficent. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Spend in the Way of Allah and do not cast yourselves into destruction with your own hands;[1] do good, for Allah loves those who do good.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] 'To spend in the way of Allah' signifies financial sacrifice in order to establish God's religion. Not to make any financial sacrifice but to be inclined, instead, to hold personal interests dear to one's heart will lead to one's ruin both in this world and in the Next. Allah will set the unbelievers to dominate over you in this world and condemn you in the Next world. - [2] The root of the word ihsan is HSN, which means doing something in a goodly manner. One standard of conduct is merely to perform the task entrusted to one. The other and higher standard is to perform that task in a wholesome manner, to devote all one's capacities and resources to its fulfilment, to do one's duty with all one's heart. The first standard is that of ordinary obedience for which it is enough that a man should fear God. The other and higher standard is that of ihsan (moral and spiritual excellence) for which it is necessary that one should have a strong love for God and a profound attachment to Him. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And let reverence move you to spend in Allah’s cause and do not cast yourselves into ruin with your own hands, and imprint your deeds with wisdom and piety, for Allah likes those who perfect their illustrious toils and turn their thoughts on moral excellence and benevolence. ### Bijan Moeinian Be generous in charity to please God and do not let your own hand [by being stingy] lead you to your ruin.
