Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 173 / 286 · **Juz:** 2 · **Mushaf page:** 25 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-173 ## Arabic اِنَّمَا حَرَّمَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَيْتَةَ وَالدَّمَ وَلَحْمَ الْخِنْز۪يرِ وَمَٓا اُهِلَّ بِه۪ لِغَيْرِ اللّٰهِۚ فَمَنِ اضْطُرَّ غَيْرَ بَاغٍ وَلَا عَادٍ فَلَٓا اِثْمَ عَلَيْهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ ## Transcription Innama harrama AAalaykumualmaytata waddama walahma alkhinzeeri wamaohilla bihi lighayri Allahi famani idturra ghayra baghinwala AAadin fala ithma AAalayhi inna Allahaghafoorun raheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He has only forbidden you carrion, blood and pork and what has been consecrated to other than Allah. But anyone who is forced to eat it – without desiring it or going to excess in it – commits no crime. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. ### Progressive Muslims He has only forbidden for you what is already dead, and the blood, and the meat of pig, and what was dedicated to other than God. Whoever finds himself forced out of need and without disobedience or animosity, then there is no sin upon him. God is Forgiving, Merciful. ### Shabbir Ahmed He has forbidden you only carrion (any animal that dies by itself), and blood, and swine flesh, and anything --- (not just meat) --- that has been dedicated to any other than Allah (be it any person, an ancestor, a saint, an idol or a tomb (5:3)). But, he who is compelled out of necessity, neither craving nor indulging in excess, it is not a dragging violation for him. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary He has made unlawful to you only carrion and blood and the flesh of swine and that over which there has been pronounced the name of anyone other than Allah’s.[1] But he who is constrained (to eat of them) – and he neither covets them nor exceeds the indispensable limit incurs no sin: Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] This applies to the flesh of an animal slaughtered in the name of anything and anyone other than God as well as to the food prepared as an offering to someone other than God. God alone is the master of everything - of the animal whose flesh we consume as well as of every other kind of food - and it is He Who has mercifully provided us with them. Hence, if it is appropriate to pronounce any name as an expression of gratitude, of consecration, it can only be the name of God. To use anyone else's name means that we believe that there is some other being either instead of or in addition to God which deserves to be acknowledged as our Lord and Benefactor. - [2] This verse grants permission to use prohibited things with three stipulations. First, one must be in a state of extreme compulsion, for example, being gravely ill or being so hungry and thirsty that one's very life is in danger, and a prohibited thing is all that is available to save one's life. Second, the person concerned should have no inclination to violate the Law of God. Third, in consuming the prohibited thing one should not exceed the limits of bare necessity. If a few bites or a few drops are enough to save one's life, one ought not to go beyond the absolute minimum. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab He only forbids you to eat the flesh of a dead beast, and blood, the flesh of swine and the flesh of a beast slaughtered under the invocation of a name other than Allah’s. But under compelling circumstances, not through wilful disobedience and transgression, shall Allah relax the status of a sin incurred; Allah is indeed Ghafurun (Forgiving),and Rahimun. ### Bijan Moeinian God hereby forbids you the consumption of the flesh of an animal which has been dead of itself (not slaughtered), blood, pork and any animal slaughtered in dedication to other "deities" except God (one cannot go around and kill the living species which belong to God without asking His permission first. ) In case of emergency, however, you may eat even these forbidden foods (as much as it is necessary for survival and not to overindulge.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan He has forbidden you only the Maitah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allâh (or has been slaughtered for idols, on which Allâh’s Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him. Truly, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. Surely, Allâh is Great Protector, Ever Merciful. ### Ali Quli Qarai He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of the swine, and that which has been offered to other than Allah. But should someone be compelled, without being rebellious or aggressive, there shall be no sin upon him. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Size yalnızca ölmüş hayvanı, kanı, domuz etini ve Allah'tan başkası adına kesilmiş olanı haram kılmıştır. Fakat kim bunlardan yemiye muztar kalırsa (kimseye) saldırmamak ve haddi (ölmeyecek mikdarı) geçmemek şartıyle onun üzerine günah yokdur. Şübhesiz ki Allah çok yarğılayıcıdır, hakkıyle esirgeyicidir. ### İbni Kesir O, size; ölüyü, kanı, domuz etini, Allah'tan başkası için kesileni haram kılmıştır. Ancak kim mecbur kalırsa saldırmamak ve sınırı aşmamak şartıyla günah yoktur. Muhakkak ki Allah, Gafur'dur, Rahim'dir. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı O, size yalnız leşi, kanı, domuz etini ve üzerinde Allah'ın adından başka bir adın anıldığı şeyi yasakladı.
