Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 156 / 286 · **Juz:** 2 · **Mushaf page:** 23 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-156 ## Arabic اَلَّذ۪ينَ اِذَٓا اَصَابَتْهُمْ مُص۪يبَةٌۙ قَالُٓوا اِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَاِنَّٓا اِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَۜ ## Transcription Allatheena itha asabat-hummuseebatun qaloo inna lillahi wa-innailayhi rajiAAoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘We belong to Allah and to Him we will return. ’ ### Progressive Muslims The ones who, when afflicted with adversity, they Say: "We are to God and to Him we will return. " ### Shabbir Ahmed When a calamity befalls them, they do not waver. Rather, they say, "We are for Allah, dedicated to His Cause and every step of ours will advance in the Direction shown by Him." " ### Marmaduke Pickthall Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! we are Allah's and lo! unto Him we are returning. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary those who when any affliction smites them, they say: "Verily, we belong to Allah, and it is to Him that we are destined to return."[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] 'Saying' does not signify the mere making of a statement. It means a statement which is accompanied by a deep conviction in one's heart: 'To Allah do we belong.' This being so, a man is bound to think that whatever has been sacrificed for God has in fact attained its legitimate end, for it has been spent in the way of the One to whom all things truly belong. 'And it is to Him that we are destined to return' refers to the fact that man will not stay forever in this world and will return, sooner or later, to God. And if man is indeed destined to return to God why should he not return to Him having spent his all, having staked his life for His sake? This alternative is preferable to the pursuit of self-aggrandizement and then meeting death either by sickness or accident. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Who lift to Allah their inward sight when befallen with a misfortune or a calamity, expressing themselves thus: "We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return". ### Bijan Moeinian When the laters face a disaster (mostly in case of the death of their beloved ones), they face it calmly and say: "We are originated by God and to Him we return [so why worry about this incident?]" ### Al-Hilali & Khan Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: "Truly!
