Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 118 / 286 · **Juz:** 1 · **Mushaf page:** 17 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-118 ## Arabic وَقَالَ الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ لَوْلَا يُكَلِّمُنَا اللّٰهُ اَوْ تَأْت۪ينَٓا اٰيَةٌۜ كَذٰلِكَ قَالَ الَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِثْلَ قَوْلِهِمْۜ تَشَابَهَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْۜ قَدْ بَيَّنَّا الْاٰيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ ## Transcription Waqala allatheena layaAAlamoona lawla yukallimuna Allahu awta/teena ayatun kathalika qala allatheenamin qablihim mithla qawlihim tashabahat quloobuhum qadbayyanna al-ayati liqawmin yooqinoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who do not know say, ‘If only Allah would speak to us, or some sign come to us!’ just like those before them who said the same as they say. Their hearts are much the same. We have made the Signs clear for people who have certainty. ### Progressive Muslims And those who do not know said: "If only God would speak to us, or a sign would come to us. " It is the same thing that the people before them have said, their hearts are so similar! We have clarified the signs for a people who comprehend. ### Shabbir Ahmed Those who do not explore the realm of knowledge say, "Why does not Allah speak to us directly, or a miracle come to us?" Even thus spoke those before them, as these speak. Their minds are alike. We have made clear Our Signs in the Universe (67:3), and in these verses, for people who wish to attain conviction. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And those who know not say: “Oh, that God would but speak to us, or a proof but come to us!” Thus said those before them likewise; their hearts are similar. We have made plain the proofs for people who are certain. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And those who do not know said: "If only God would speak to us, or a sign would come to us." It is the same thing that the people before them have said, their hearts are so similar! We have clarified the signs for a people who comprehend. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Those who possess no knowledge say, "If only GOD could speak to us, or some miracle could come to us!" Others before them have uttered similar utterances; their minds are similar. We do manifest the miracles for those who have attained certainty. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Creator of the heavens and the earth from nothingness, He has only to say when He wills a thing: "Be", and it is. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Those who do not know say, "Why does Allah not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith]. ### Muhammad Asad AND [only] those who are devoid of knowledge say, "Why does God not speak unto us, nor is a [miraculous] sign shown to us?" Even thus, like unto what they, say, spoke those who lived before their time their hearts are all alike. Indeed, We have made all the signs manifest unto people who are endowed with inner certainty. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And those who have no knowledge say: Why doth not Allah speak unto us, or some sign come unto us? Even thus, as they now speak, spake those (who were) before them. Their hearts are all alike. We have made clear the revelations for people who are sure. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The ignorant say: "Why does Allah not speak to us?[1] Why does no Sign come to us?" The same was said by people before them. Their hearts are all alike.[2] We have made the Signs clear for people of firm faith.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] What they meant was that God should either appear before them Himself, tell them plainly that the Qur'an was a revelation from Him, and proclaim His injunctions, or cause them to see some extraordinary sign that would convince them that whatever Muhammad (peace be on him) told them was from Him. - [2] The fact is that the misguided people of the time of the revelation of the Qur'an did not raise any objection or make any demands essentially different from those of the misguided people of the past. From the remote past till today, error and misguidedness seem to have the same character, so the same doubts and objections are repeated over and over again. - [3] The demand that God should speak to them directly was too absurd even to be answered. The question dealt with here concerns the demand for a sign that would convince them of the Truth. In response to this it is pointed out that many signs do exist, but all such signs are of profit only to those who are inclined to believe. As for those who are bent on disbelief, what sign can be shown to them, and to what avail? ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And those who are so ignorant to know the truth vented their hearts, which are overflowing with the sense of sin, they said: "If only Allah would speak to us or display a sign evincing both Muhammad's Prophethood and integrity!" This much said those who preceded them who had similar natured hearts as those who succeeded them. Their thoughts are so base, pursuing vanity. We have expounded Our revelations and signs evincing both Omnipotence and Authority to people who lift to Allah their inward sight. ### Bijan Moeinian Those who are not aware [of their physical/ mental shortcomings] say: "Why God does not talk to us directly; why do we not get any revelation?" People before them, with the same kind of mentality, used to ask similar questions. The fact of the matter is, the Lord’s signs are already available to the believers (the best example of such signs is this Qur’an which is in front of you.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan And those who have no knowledge say: "Why does not Allâh speak to us (face to face) or why does not a sign come to us?" So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike, We have indeed made plain the signs for people who believe with certainty. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Say those without knowledge: "Why speaketh not Allah unto us? or why cometh not unto us a Sign?" So said the people before them words of similar import. Their hearts are alike. We have indeed made clear the Signs unto any people who hold firmly to Faith (in their hearts). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Those who have no knowledge say, "If only Allah would speak to us or a sign would come to us!" The same was said by those who came before. Their hearts are all alike. Indeed, We have made the signs clear for people of sure faith. ### Taqi Usmani Those who do not know say: "Why is it that Allah does not speak to us, nor does a sign come to us?" So spoke those before them as these people do. Their hearts resemble each other. We have indeed made the signs clear for the people who have certitude. ### Abdul Haleem Those who have no knowledge also say, ‘If only God would speak to us!’ or ‘If only a miraculous sign would come to us!’ People before them said the same things: their hearts are all alike. We have made Our signs clear enough to those who have solid faith. ### Arthur John Arberry And they that know not say, 'Why does God not speak to us? Why does a sign not come to us?' We have made manifest the signs unto a people that are sure. ### Mahmoud Ghali And they that do not know have said, "if (only) Allah had spoken to us or a sign had come up to us. " Thus did the ones even before them say the like of their saying. Their hearts resemble each other. We have already made evident the signs for a people that have certitude. ### George Sale And they who know not the scriptures say, unless God speak unto us, or thou shew us a sign, we will not believe. So said those before them, according to their saying: Their hearts resemble each other. We have already shewn manifest signs unto people who firmly believe; ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Those without knowledge say: "Why does Allah not speak to us? Or why does a Sign not come to us?" The people before them said words of similar nature; Their hearts are alike. We have indeed made clear the Signs to any people who hold firmly to Faith (in their hearts). ### Amatul Rahman Omar And those who do not know (the wisdom implied in Divine revelation) say, `Why does not Allâh (Himself) speak to us or give us a (convincing) sign?' That is exactly what their predecessors had said. Their hearts have become very much alike. We have certainly made (Our) signs explicitly clear for a people who wish to be convinced. ### Ali Quli Qarai Those who have no knowledge say, ‘Why does not Allah speak to us, or come to us a sign?’ So said those who were before them, [words] similar to what they say. Alike are their hearts. We have certainly made the signs clear for a people who have certainty. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü (Allah ismiyle işaret edilen hakkında) bilgisizler (O'nu gökte bir tanrı sanıp) "Allah bizimle konuşsaydı ya da bize bir mucize verseydi ya" dediler!. . Onlardan öncekiler de onların bu söylediklerinin benzerini söylemişlerdi. Kalbleri birbirine benzedi. Biz, kesin bilgiyle inanan bir topluluğa ayetleri apaçık gösterdik. ### Bayraktar Bayraklı — Yeni Bir Anlayışın Işığında Kur'an Meali Bilmeyenler dediler ki: "Allah bizimle niçin konuşmuyor,yahut bize niçin bir ayet gelmiyor?" Bunlardan öncekiler de tıpkı böyle, bunların dedikleri gibi demişti. Onların kalpleri (anlayışları) birbirine benziyor. Biz ayetleri, kesin olarak inanacak bir toplum için açıkladık. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali İlmi olmıyanlar da, Allah bizimle konuşsa ya, yahud bize bir mu'cize gelse ya, dediler, bunlardan evvelkiler de tıpkı böyle, bunların dedikleri gibi demişti, kalbleri birbirine benzedi; cidden yakin edinecek bir ümmet için biz mucizeleri açık bir suretde gösterdik ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) İlmi olmayanlar da: "Ne olur Allah bizimle konuşsa, yahut bize bir mucize gelse!" dediler. Bunlardan öncekiler de tıpkı bunların dedikleri gibi demişlerdi. Kalpleri birbirine benzedi. Cidden gerçekleri bilmek isteyen bir ümmet için biz mucizeleri açık bir şekilde gösterdik. ### Gültekin Onan Bilgisizler "Tanrı bizimle konuşmalı veya bize de bir ayet gelmeli değil miydi?" dediler. Onlardan öncekiler de onların bu söylediklerinin benzerini söylemişlerdi. Kalpleri birbirine benzedi. Biz kesin bilgiyle inanan bir topluluğa ayetleri apaçık gösterdik. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (Hakıykati) bilmeyenler (veya bilib de bilmezlenenler): "Ne olur, Allah bizimle (senin hak peygamber olduğuna dair yüz yüze bir) söylese, konuşsa, yahud (bu babda) bize bir ayet (mucize) gelse" dedi (ler). Onlardan evvelkiler de tıpkı onların söyledikleri gibi söylemiş (ler) di. Kalbleri birbirine ne kadar da benzemiş!. Biz hakıykatleri iyice bilmek isteyenlere ayetlerimizi apaçık göstermişizdir. ### İbni Kesir Bilmeyenler dediler ki: Allah bizimle konuşmalı veya bize bir ayet gelmeli değil miydi? Onlardan öncekiler de onların dedikleri gibi demişlerdi. Kalbleri birbirine benzemiş. Biz yakınen bilmek isteyen bir kavme ayetlerimizi apaçık bildirdik. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı (Yalnız) bilgiden yoksun olanlar: "Allah neden bizimle konuşmaz ve neden bize (mucizevi) bir işaret göstermez?" derler. Onlardan önce yaşamış olanlar da tıpkı onların dedikleri gibi demişlerdi: Kalpleri hep birbirine benziyor. Gerçekte Biz, bütün işaretleri, yürekten inanıp tasdik etmeye niyetli olanlar için açık ve anlaşılır kıldık. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Bilmeyenler: -Ne olur Allah bizimle konuşsa veya bize bir ayet gelse?! demektedirler. Onlardan öncekiler de tıpkı onların söyledikleri gibi söylemişlerdi; kalpleri (nasıl da) birbirine benzemiş. Oysa biz, iyice bilmek isteyen bir toplum için ayetlerimizi apaçık göstermişizdir. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Bilmeyenler dediler ki: "Allah bizimle konuşmalı, ya da bize bir ayet (mu'cize) gelmeli değil miydi?" Onlardan öncekiler de onların dedikleri gibi demişlerdi. Kalbleri birbirine benzedi. Gerçekleri iyice bilmek isteyenlere ayetleri açıkladık. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Bilgiden yoksun olanlar dedi ki: "Allah bizimle konuşsaydı yahut bize bir mucize gelseydi ya!..." Onlardan öncekiler de aynen onların dediği gibi demişti. Kalpleri birbirine benzemiştir. Biz ayetleri, gerçeği apaçık bilmek isteyenler için iyiden iyiye açıklamışızdır. ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an İlimden yoksun olanlar "Allah bizimle niçin konuşmuyor, ya da niçin bize mucizevi bir belge ulaştırmıyor" derler. Onlardan öncekiler de aynen onların söylediğini söylemişlerdi. Akılları da birbirine benzedi.
