Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) — سورة البقرة - **Verse:** 109 / 286 · **Juz:** 1 · **Mushaf page:** 16 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-baqarah/verse-109 ## Arabic وَدَّ كَث۪يرٌ مِنْ اَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ لَوْ يَرُدُّونَكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ا۪يمَانِكُمْ كُفَّاراًۚ حَسَداً مِنْ عِنْدِ اَنْفُسِهِمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الْحَقُّۚ فَاعْفُوا وَاصْفَحُوا حَتّٰى يَأْتِيَ اللّٰهُ بِاَمْرِه۪ۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَد۪يرٌ ## Transcription Wadda katheerun min ahli alkitabilaw yaruddoonakum min baAAdi eemanikum kuffaran hasadanmin AAindi anfusihim min baAAdi ma tabayyana lahumu alhaqqufaAAfoo wasfahoo hattaya/tiya Allahu bi-amrihi inna Allaha AAalakulli shay-in qadeer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Many of the People of the Book would love it if they could make you revert to being kuffar after you have become muminun, showing their innate envy now that the truth is clear to them. But you should pardon and overlook until Allah gives His command. Truly Allah has power over all things. ### Progressive Muslims Many of the people of the Scripture have wished that they could return you to being rejecters after your believing, out of envy from their souls after the truth was made clear to them. You shall forgive them and overlook until God brings His will. God is capable of all things. ### Shabbir Ahmed Many of the People of the Book wish to make you turn back to disbelief after you have attained belief. They do this because of their personal envy even though the Truth has become manifest to them. (Ethnic and nationalistic prejudices give rise to such feelings of envy (2:111), (5:18)). Pardon them and leave them with their ways until Allah issues His Command. ((5:13), (15:85), (73:10), (74:11)). Verily, Allah has Power over all things and all events take place within the framework of His Laws. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Many among the doctors of the Law wish to turn you back as atheists after your faith out of envy from their souls after the truth has become clear to them. But pardon and forbear until God brings His command; God is over all things powerful. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Many of the people of the Book have wished that they could return you to being rejecters after your believing, out of envy from their souls after the truth was made clear to them. This is due to jealousy on their part, after the truth has become evident to them. You shall pardon them, and leave them alone, until GOD issues His judgment. GOD is Omnipotent. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Do you too, O believers, wish to question your Apostle as Moses was in the past? But he who takes unbelief in exchange for belief only strays from the right path. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. ### Muhammad Asad Out of their selfish envy, many among the followers of earlier revelation would like to bring you back to denying the truth after you have attained to faith - [even] after the truth has become clear unto them. None the less, forgive and forbear, until God shall make manifest His will: behold, God has the power to will anything. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Many of the people of the Scripture long to make you disbelievers after your belief, through envy on their own account, after the truth hath become manifest unto them. Forgive and be indulgent (toward them) until Allah give command. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Out of sheer envy many People of the Book would be glad to turn you back into unbelievers after you have become believers even though the Truth has become clear to them. Nevertheless, forgive and be indulgent[1] towards them until Allah brings forth His decision. Surely Allah is All-Powerful. _Footnotes_ - [1] This means that one should neither allow oneself to get angry at their spite and hostility, nor waste one's valuable time by engaging in useless debates and acrimonious polemics. It is better to wait patiently and observe how God deals with them. Instead of wasting energy in frivolous pursuits such as those mentioned above one should spend it in the remembrance of God and in acts of goodness, for it is these rather than barren controversies that will benefit man in the Life to Come. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Many of Ahl al-Kitab wish they could turn you renegades, a desire induced by base envy reflecting sincere hatred for you people who have conformed to Islam, even though they have recognized the truth. Nevertheless, forgive them and do not entertain them with antagonistic thoughts until Allah circumstances matters of fact in His own manner and His command comes to pass. Allah is indeed Qadirun over all in all. ### Bijan Moeinian Many followers of the Scriptures (out of envy) want to turn you (Mohammad) back to the disbelief (by involving you in lengthy discussions, arguments and disputes), in spite of the fact that they know well how truthful you are. You should be patient with them and forgive them and leave them to God for judging them in an appropriate time. Know that God is capable of doing everything. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Many of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) wish that if they could turn you away as disbelievers after you have believed, out of envy from their ownselves, even after the truth (that Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم is Allâh’s Messenger) has become manifest unto them. But forgive and overlook, till Allâh brings His Command.[1] Verily, Allâh is Able to do all things. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Quite a number of the People of the Book wish they could Turn you (people) back to infidelity after ye have believed, from selfish envy, after the Truth hath become Manifest unto them: But forgive and overlook, Till Allah accomplish His purpose; for Allah Hath power over all things. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Many among the People of the Book wish they could turn you ˹believers˺ back to disbelief because of their envy, after the truth has been made clear to them. Pardon and bear with them until Allah delivers His decision. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything. ### Taqi Usmani (O Muslims,) many among the people of the Book desire to turn you, after your accepting the faith, back into disbelievers - all out of envy on their part, even after the truth has become clear to them. So, forgive and overlook till Allah brings out His command. Siz şimdilik, Allah onlar hakkındaki emrini getirinceye kadar affedin, hoşgörün. Şimdilik siz, Allah emrini verinceye kadar af ve hoşgörüyle davranın. Şüphesiz ki, Allah her şeye gücü yetendir. ### Gültekin Onan Kitap ehlinden birçoğu / kitap ehlinin çoğu kendilerine gerçek (hak) apaçık belli olduktan sonra nefslerini (kuşatan) kıskançlıktan dolayı inanmanızdan sonra sizi küfre / kafirliğe döndürmek arzusu duydular. Fakat Tanrı'nın buyruğu gelinceye kadar onları bırakın ve ilişmeyin. Hiç kuşkusuz Tanrı herşeye gücü yetendir. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Ehl-i Kitabdan bir çoğu, Hak kendilerince besbelli oldukdan sonra, ruhlarındaki hasedden ötürü sizi imanınızdan sonra küfre döndürmek hevesine düşdü. Allanın emri gelinceye kada şimdilik onları bırakın, serzeniş de etmeyin. Şübhesiz ki Allah her şey'e hakkıyle kaadirdir. ### İbni Kesir Kitab ehlinin çoğu, hak kendilerine apaçık belli olduktan sonra içlerindeki çekememezlikten ötürü, sizi imandan sonra küfre döndürmek isterler. Allah'ın açıklayıcı emri gelene kadar onları affedin, geçin. Şüphesiz ki Allah her şeye kadir'dir. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Kendilerini önceki vahye bağlı sayanların çoğu, kıskançlıklarından dolayı, sizi iman ettikten sonra yeniden hakikati inkara döndürmek isterler; (hatta) hakikat kendileri için apaçık ortaya çıktıktan sonra bile. Buna karşılık, siz (ey imana erişenler) Allah'ın iradesini ortaya koyacağı vakte kadar onları hoşgörün ve dayanın: Unutmayın, Allah her şeye kadirdir. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Kitap ehlinden olanların bir çoğu, hak kendilerine apaçık belli olduktan sonra, içlerindeki kıskançlık yüzünden, sizi inanmanızdan sonra tekrar küfre döndürmeyi arzu ederler. Öyleyse onlara Allah'ın emri gelinceye kadar ilişmeyiniz, kendi hallerine bırakınız şüphesiz Allah'ın gücü her şeye yeter. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Kitap sahiplerinden çoğu, gerçek kendilerine besbelli olduktan sonra, sırf içlerindeki kıskançlıktan ötürü sizi imanınızdan sonra küfre döndürmek isterler.
