قَالَ قَدْ وَقَعَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ رِجْسٌ وَغَضَبٌۜ اَتُجَادِلُونَن۪ي ف۪ٓي اَسْمَٓاءٍ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَٓا اَنْتُمْ وَاٰبَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ مَا نَزَّلَ اللّٰهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍۜ فَانْتَظِرُٓوا اِنّ۪ي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُنْتَظِر۪ينَ

## Transcription

Qala qad waqaAAa AAalaykum minrabbikum rijsun waghadabun atujadiloonanee fee asma-insammaytumooha antum waabaokum manazzala Allahu biha min sultanin fantathirooinnee maAAakum mina almuntathireen

## Translations

### Aisha Bewley

He said, ‘Punishment and anger have come down on you from your Lord. Do you argue with me regarding names which you and your forefathers invented and for which Allah has sent down no authority? Wait, then; I am waiting with you.’

(Aad were powerful people but their society had gone unjust. Since there is a Law of Respite for nations, they flourished and were unable to see the wrong thus far). Hud said, "Allah's Law of Requital is already hovering over you. Do you argue with me about certain names, false authorities that you and your forefathers have fabricated? And Allah never authorized them (53:23). Then wait for the consequences, and I am also waiting."

Hud warned them: 'Surely punishment and wrath from your Lord have befallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about mere names that you and your forefathers have concocted[1] and for which Allah has sent down no sanction?[2] Wait, then, and I too am with you among those who wait.'

- [1] They looked to gods of rain and gods of wind, wealth, and health. But none of these enjoys godhead. There are many instances in our own time of people whose beliefs are no different from the ones mentioned above. There are people who are wont to call someone Mushkil Kusha, 'the remover of distress' or to call someone else Ganjbakhsh, 'the bestower of treasures'. But God's creatures cannot remove the distresses of other creatures like themselves, nor do they have any treasure that they might give away to others. Their titles are merely empty words, bereft of the qualities attributed to them. All argumentation aimed at justifying those titles amounts to a lot of sound and fury about nothing.
- [2] The Makkans could produce no sanction from Allah - Whom they themselves acknowledged as the Supreme God - that He had transferred to their false gods any of His power or authority. None has any authorization from God to remove distress from, or bestow treasures on, others. It is the Makkans themselves who arbitrarily chose to confer parts of God's power on those beings.

"Now", said Hud, " you have confirmed yourselves in prepensed malice and the prophesy of Allah's punishment and indignation against you is thus ratified". "Do you contend against Allah in favour of your named idols you and your fathers designated as gods, objects Allah never authorized! " "You Just await the justice prepared above in heaven's realm; I will await it also".

He replied: "You have thus condemned yourselves and earned the Lord's disenchantment. How can you engage in an argument about the oneness of God with me? What are these baseless names that you and your forefathers have invented [god of rain, god of the winds, god of this and god of that]? Let us wait and see the result [of your disobedient.]
