Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 51 / 206 · **Juz:** 8 · **Mushaf page:** 155 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-51 ## Arabic اَلَّذ۪ينَ اتَّخَذُوا د۪ينَهُمْ لَهْواً وَلَعِباً وَغَرَّتْهُمُ الْحَيٰوةُ الدُّنْيَاۚ فَالْيَوْمَ نَنْسٰيهُمْ كَمَا نَسُوا لِقَٓاءَ يَوْمِهِمْ هٰذَاۙ وَمَا كَانُوا بِاٰيَاتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ ## Transcription Allatheena ittakhathoodeenahum lahwan walaAAiban wagharrat-humu alhayatuaddunya falyawma nansahum kamanasoo liqaa yawmihim hatha wama kanoobi-ayatina yajhadoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley those who took their deen as a diversion and a game, and were deluded by the life of the dunya. ’ Today We will forget them just as they forgot the encounter of this Day and denied Our Signs. ### Progressive Muslims The ones who took their system as amusement and games, and were preoccupied with this worldly life. Today We forget them as they forgot their meeting on this Day, and they did not heed Our revelations. ### Shabbir Ahmed Those who took their religion as mere amusement and ritual partying, were deceived by immediate gains of the worldly life (6:70). " So today We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs and for having rejected Our verses. ### Muhammad Asad those who, beguiled by the life of this world, have made play and passing delights their religion! [And God will say:] "And so We shall be oblivious of them today as they were oblivious of the coming of this their Day [of Judgment], and as Our messages they did deny: ### Marmaduke Pickthall Who took their religion for a sport and pastime, and whom the life of the world beguiled. So this day We have forgotten them even as they forgot the meeting of this their Day and as they used to deny Our tokens. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary who have made their religion a sport and play. and whom the life of the world has beguiled. So on that Day We shall forget them in the manner they forget their meeting of this Day with Us and persist in denying Our revelations.'[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] The trialogue between the People of Paradise, the People of the Fire. and the People of the Heights gives some indication of the tremendous range of human faculties in the Next World. These faculties would increase to such an extent that the People of Paradise, the People of the Fire and the People of the Heights will be able to see, hear and talk to one another. Other Qur'anic statements about the Hereafter enable us to realize that the laws operating in the Next World will be altogether different from those in the present. Notwithstanding this, men's personalities will not undergo any such change. Those who cannot perceive any thing beyond the present limited world and who are incapable of imagining scales bigger than the ones relating to the present world, make fun of the statements in the Qur'an and Hadith about life in the Hereafter. This only betrays their poverty of understanding and imagination. The fact, however, is that the possibilities for life are not as narrow and limited as their minds. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Who treated their religion mockingly and amused themselves with its principles and were deceived by the sensuous enjoyment they regarded as the chief object in life. "There, Allah says to them ": Now is the Day We forget you and you shall be left to twist and turn in the scorching flames of Hell in vindication of the right you had willfully forgotten; you neglected the noble discourse addressed by Our Messengers, and you failed to advance what would have served as a future security on this Momentous Day and you disregarded Allah and His revelations and signs betokening Omnipotence and Authority. ### Bijan Moeinian In that Day, I will forget those who treated their religion as a joke and entertainment and were totally absorbed in the worldly affair, the same way that they forgot My Revelations and [the seriousness of] the Day of the meeting of their Creator. So this Day We shall forget them as they forgot their meeting of this Day, and as they used to reject Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali "Such as took their religion to be mere amusement and play, and were deceived by the life of the world."
