Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 31 / 206 · **Juz:** 8 · **Mushaf page:** 153 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-31 ## Arabic يَا بَن۪ٓي اٰدَمَ خُذُوا ز۪ينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُواۚ اِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِف۪ينَ۟ ## Transcription Ya banee adama khuthoozeenatakum AAinda kulli masjidin wakuloo washraboo walatusrifoo innahu la yuhibbu almusrifeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Say: ‘Who has forbidden the fine clothing Allah has produced for His slaves and the good kinds of provision?’ Say: ‘On the Day of Rising such things will be exclusively for those who had iman during their life in this world. ’ In this way We make the Signs clear for people who know. ### Progressive Muslims O Children of Adam, dress nicely at every temple, and eat and drink and do not indulge; He does not like the indulgers. ### Shabbir Ahmed O Children of Adam! Subservience and obedience to the Divine Commands ensures for you adornment and nice things in life. So enjoy Allah's Bounties, but do not commit excesses. Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Children of Adam! Take your adornment at every time of Prayer;[1] and eat and drink without going to excesses. For Allah does not like those who go to excess.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] The word zina which occurs in this verse refers to full and proper dress. While performing Prayer people are required not only to cover the private parts of their body, but also to wear a dress that serves the two-fold purpose of covering and giving one a decent appearance. The directive to pray in a proper and decent dress is aimed at refuting the misconception entertained by ignorant people down the ages that man should worship God either in a nude or semi-naked state, or at least have a shabby and unkempt appearance while worshipping. In this verse people are being told the opposite of this. At the time of worship they should not only be free from all kinds of nudity and indecency, but should also be in a decent dress. - [2] God does not want to subject man to want and misery or starvation or to deprive him as such of the good things of this worldly life. On the contrary, it pleases Him that man should appear in good decent dress and enjoy the clean food provided for him by God. There is nothing sinful in that. As for sin, it consists in transgressing the bounds set by God. This transgression could be committed in both ways: by making the unlawful lawful, or by making the lawful unlawful. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab O you children of Adam: Pay attention to your personal appearance and your apparel at every mosque where you dutifully observe your act of worship. The apparel often proclaims the man and his due respect for the dignity of the occasion, not to mention the solemnity of applying your minds to the presence of Allah. Do not be influenced by the Pagan's superstitions of permitting certain kinds of food and prohibiting others, but eat and drink of the permitted but avoid intemperance; Allah does not like the extravagant who carry anything to excess. ### Bijan Moeinian O’ children of Adam, put your nice cloths on (and dress fully, properly and decently) when you attend a place where God is being worshipped. Enjoy eating and drinking but not in a wasteful manner. God does not like wasteful people. ### Al-Hilali & Khan O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying[1] and going round (the Tawâf of) the Ka‘bah, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allâh) likes not Al-Musrifûn (those who waste by extravagance). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran O Children of Adam!
