Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 26 / 206 · **Juz:** 8 · **Mushaf page:** 152 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-26 ## Arabic يَا بَن۪ٓي اٰدَمَ قَدْ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ لِبَاساً يُوَار۪ي سَوْاٰتِكُمْ وَر۪يشاً۠ وَلِبَاسُ التَّقْوٰى ذٰلِكَ خَيْرٌۜ ذٰلِكَ مِنْ اٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ## Transcription Ya banee adama qad anzalnaAAalaykum libasan yuwaree saw-atikumwareeshan walibasu attaqwa thalikakhayrun thalika min ayati AllahilaAAallahum yaththakkaroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Children of Adam! We have sent down clothing to you to conceal your private parts, and fine apparel, but the garment of taqwa – that is best! That is one of Allah’s Signs, so that hopefully you will pay heed. ### Progressive Muslims O Children of Adam, We have sent down for you garments to cover your wickedness, as well as feathers; and the garment of righteousness is the best. That is from God's signs, perhaps they will remember. ### Shabbir Ahmed O Children of Adam! We have provided you with garments to cover your bodies as well as to adorn you. The best garment for you to wear, in addition, is good conduct. Your character decorates you inside out. These are the verses of Allah that they must take to heart. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation O children of Adam: We have sent down upon you raiment to hide your shame, and as adornment; but the raiment of prudent fear, that is best. Indeed, We have bestowed upon you from on high [the knowledge of making] garments to cover your nakedness, and as a thing of beauty: but the garment of God-consciousness is the best of all. Herein lies a message from God, so that man" might take it to heart. ### Marmaduke Pickthall O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary 0 Children of Adam![1] Indeed We have sent down to you a garment which covers your shame and provides protection and adornment. But the finest of all is the garment of piety. That is one of the signs of Allah so that they may take heed. _Footnotes_ - [1] By referring to an important aspect of Adam and Eve's story, the attention of the people of Arabia of those days was drawn to the evil influence of Satan upon their lives. Under Satan's influence they had begun to see dress merely as a shield of protection against the inclemencies of the weather and as a means of adornment. The basic purpose of dress to cover the private parts of the body - had receded into the background. People had no inhibition about the immodest exposure of the private parts of their body in public. To publicly take a bath absolutely naked, to attend to the call of nature on thoroughfares, were the order of the day. To crown it all, in the course of Pilgrimage they used to circumambulate around the Ka'bah in stark nakedness. Women even surpassed men in immodesty. In their view, the performance of religious rites in complete nudity was an act of religious merit. Immodesty, however, was not an exclusive characteristic of the people of Arabia. Many nations indulged in it in the past, and many nations continue to indulge in it even now. Hence the message embodied in these verses is not directed just to the people of Arabia. It is rather directed to all men. Mankind, which is the progeny of Adam, is warned against this particular aspect of Satanic influence on their lives. When men show indifference to God's Guidance and turn away from the Message of the Prophets, they virtually place themselves at the mercy of Satan. For it is Satan who makes them abandon way's that are consistent with true human nature and who leads them to immodesty in the same way he did with Adam and Eve. Were man to reflect on this, it would become quite evident that when he is deprived of the guidance of the Prophets, he cannot even appreciate, let alone fulfil, the primary requirements of his true nature. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab O you Children of Adam: We have furnished you with a raiment to screen your nakedness, which offends your sense of modesty and decency, and with a top attire to adorn your personal appearance, and best of all is the vesture of piety. This is one of Allah's striking disclosures to man, so that –you- people may hopefully reflect. ### Bijan Moeinian O’ children of Adam, I have commanded you to wear cloths in order to cover the shameful parts of your body and protect yourselves. The best cloth [to surround you for your protection,] however, is the garment of piety. This commandment is revealed from the Lord so that you may [obey it and in this manner] remember the Lord. ### Al-Hilali & Khan O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts) and as an adornment; and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth[1]). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali O ye Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover your shame, as well as to be an adornment to you. But the raiment of righteousness,- that is the best. Such are among the Signs of Allah, that they may receive admonition! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah’s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful. ### Taqi Usmani O children of ’Ādam, We have sent down to you the dress that covers your shame and provides adornment. As for the dress of Taqwā (piety), that is the best. That is one of the signs of Allah, so that they may learn a lesson. ### Abdul Haleem Children of Adam, We have given you garments to cover your nakedness and as adornment for you; the garment of God-consciousness is the best of all garments- this is one of God’s signs, so that people may take heed. ### Arthur John Arberry Children of Adam!
