Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 203 / 206 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 175 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-203 ## Arabic وَاِذَا لَمْ تَأْتِهِمْ بِاٰيَةٍ قَالُوا لَوْلَا اجْتَبَيْتَهَاۜ قُلْ اِنَّـمَٓا اَتَّبِـعُ مَا يُوحٰٓى اِلَيَّ مِنْ رَبّ۪يۚ هٰذَا بَصَٓائِرُ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ ## Transcription Wa-itha lam ta/tihim bi-ayatinqaloo lawla ijtabaytaha qul innamaattabiAAu ma yooha ilayya min rabbee hathabasa-iru min rabbikum wahudan warahmatun liqawminyu/minoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley If you do not bring them a Sign, they say, ‘Why have you not come up with one?’ Say, ‘I follow only what has been revealed to me from my Lord. ’ This is clear insight from your Lord, and guidance and mercy, for people who have iman. ### Progressive Muslims And because you do not bring them a sign, they Say: "If only you had brought one. " Say: "I only follow what is inspired to me from my Lord. This is an evidence from your Lord, and a guide and mercy to a people who believe." ### Shabbir Ahmed When you do not produce a miracle that they demand, they say, "Why not ask God for it?" Say, "I simply follow and convey what is revealed to me from my Lord. " These (revelations) are an evident proof from your Lord, and a guidance and grace for those who believe. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when you, [O Muúammad], do not bring them a sign, they say, "Why have you not contrived it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This [Qur''an] is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe." ### Muhammad Asad And yet, when thou [O Prophet] dost not produce any miracle for them, some [people] say, "Why dost thou not seek to obtain it [from God]? Say: "I only follow whatever is being revealed to me by my Sustainer: this [revelation] is a means of insight from your Sustainer, and a guidance and grace unto people who will believe. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when thou bringest not a verse for them they say: Why hast thou not chosen it? Say: I follow only that which is inspired in me from my Lord. This (Qur'an) is insight from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy for a people that believe. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary [O Prophet!] When you do not produce before them any miracle, they say: 'Why do you not choose for yourself a miracle?'[1] Say to them: 'I follow only what is revealed to me by my Lord. This is nothing but a means of insight into the truth, and guidance and mercy from your Lord to the people who believe.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] This question is a taunt rather than a simple query. What the utterance implies is that if the claim to prophethood is genuine, it should have been supported by some miracle. The next verse contains a fitting rejoinder to the taunt. - [2] The Prophet (peace be on him) is being made to tell his opponents in clear terms that he has no power to get whatever he wants. Being God's Messenger, he is required to follow the directives of the One Who has sent him and has granted him the Qur'an which has the light of guidance. The major characteristic of this Book is that those who seek guidance from it do indeed find the right way. The moral excellence visible in the lives of those people who accept the Qur'an is testimony to the fact that they have been blessed with God's mercy. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And if you do not present them with a supernatural act to satisfy their desire, they wish you would go in quest of it. Say to them: I only follow what is revealed to me by spiritual influence from Allah, my Creator; this is the Quran, the true illumination and enlightenment. It is revealed by Allah, your Creator, to open your mind's eyes and guide those whose hearts have been touched with the divine hand into all truth and to confer on them Allah's mercy and blessings. ### Bijan Moeinian When you do not come up with a miracle per request, they say: "Why do you not ask the Lord to help you with a miracle?" Say: "My task is to follow what is revealed to me [and I am not in miracle- making business. ] This Qur'an [by itself is the greatest miracle as it] contains beacons of insight from your Lord as well as guidance sent as a mercy to those who chose to believe. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And if you do not bring them a miracle [according to their (i.e. Quraish-pagans’) proposal], they say: "Why have you not brought it?"[1] Say: "I but follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This (the Qur’ân) is nothing but evidence from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali If thou bring them not a revelation, they say: "Why hast thou not got it together?"
