Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 180 / 206 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 173 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-180 ## Arabic وَلِلّٰهِ الْاَسْمَٓاءُ الْحُسْنٰى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَاۖ وَذَرُوا الَّذ۪ينَ يُلْحِدُونَ ف۪ٓي اَسْمَٓائِه۪ۜ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ## Transcription Walillahi al-asmao alhusnafadAAoohu biha watharoo allatheenayulhidoona fee asma-ihi sayujzawna ma kanooyaAAmaloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley To Allah belong the Most Beautiful Names, so call on Him by them and abandon those who desecrate His Names. They will be repaid for what they did. ### Progressive Muslims And to God belong the beautiful names, so call Him by them; and ignore those who blaspheme in His names. They will be punished for what they used to do. ### Shabbir Ahmed All Names of Allah are the fairest names. You can invoke Him by any of them. Be mindful not to over-emphasize a single attribute of His. (For example, the Merciful God is also a Just God). They will be requited what they do. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Allah has the most excellent names.[1] So call on Him by His names and shun those who distort them. They shall soon be requited for their deeds.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] Here the present discourse is nearing its end. Before concluding, people are warned in a style which combines admonition with censure against some basic wrongs. People are here being warrned particularly against denial combined with mockery which they, had adopted towards the teachings of the Prophet (peace be on him). - [2] The name of a thing reflects how it is conceptualized. Hence, inappropriate concepts are reflected in inappropriate names, and vice versa. Moreover, the attitude a man adopts towards different things is also based on the concepts he entertains of those things. If a concept about a thing is erroneous, so will be man's relationship with it. On the other hand. a right concept about a thing will lead to establishing, the right relationship with it. In the same way, as this applies to relationships with worldly objects, so it applies to relationships with God. If a man is mistaken about God - be it about His person or attributes - he will choose false words for God. And the falsity of concepts about God affects man's whole ethical attitude. This is understandable since man's whole ethical attitude is directly related to man's concept of God and God's relationship with the universe and man. It is for this reason that the Qur'an asks man to shun profanity in naming God. Only the most beautiful names befit God, and hence man should invoke Him by them. Any profanity in this respect will lead to evil consequences. The 'most excellent names' used of God express His greatness and paramountcy, holiness, purity, and the perfection and absoluteness of all His attributes. The opposite trend has been termed ilhad in this verse. The word ilhad literally means 'to veer away from the straight direction'. The word is used, for instance, when an arrow misses the mark and strikes elsewhere. (See Raghib al-Isfahani, al-Mufradat, q.v. ilhad - Ed.) The commitment of ilhad in naming God mentioned in the verse consists of choosing names which are below His majestic dignity and which are inconsistent with the reverence due to Him; names which ascribe evil or defect to God, or reflect false notions about Him. Equally blasphemous is the act of calling some creature by a name which befits God alone, The Qur'anic exhortation in the above verse to 'shun those who distort God's names' implies that if misguided people fail to see reason, the righteous should not engross themselves in unnecessary argumentation with them. For such men will themselves suffer dire consequences. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab To Allah belong all the Commendable attributes you people may use when invoking Him under any circumstance, and disregard those who use them profanely. They shall be requited with what is commensurate with their profanity. ### Bijan Moeinian God has many wonderful attributes [such as being Merciful, Forgiving, Greatest, Lord, King, Just, Creator, teacher,. ..]; call upon Him using these names. Never mind those who make such names subject to their mockeries. They will earn what they deserve for their behavior. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allâh[1], so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on him by them; but shun such men as use profanity in his names: for what they do, they will soon be requited. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them, and keep away from those who abuse His Names.[1] They will be punished for what they used to do. ### Taqi Usmani For Allah there are the most beautiful names. So, call Him by them, and leave those who deviate in (the matter of) His names. They shall be recompensed for what they have been doing. ### Abdul Haleem The Most Excellent Names belong to God: use them to call on Him, and keep away from those who abuse them- they will be requited for what they do. ### Arthur John Arberry To God belong the Names Most Beautiful; so call Him by them, and leave those who blaspheme His Names -- they shall assuredly be recompensed for the things they did. ### E. So call on Him by these attributes. And leave alone those who deviate from the right way with respect to His attributes. They shall be requited for what they do. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed The Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah: So call on Him by them; And keep away from such men who use vulgarity (blasphemy) in His names: For what they do, they will be soon punished. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And to Allâh alone belong all the fairest and most perfect attributes, so call on Him by these, and leave alone those who deviate from the right way with respect to His attributes (and violate their sanctity). They shall be repaid with punishment for their (evil) deeds. ### Ali Quli Qarai To Allah belong the Best Names, so supplicate Him by them, and abandon those who commit sacrilege in His names.
