Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 133 / 206 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 165 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-133 ## Arabic فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ الطُّوفَانَ وَالْجَرَادَ وَالْقُمَّلَ وَالضَّفَادِعَ وَالدَّمَ اٰيَاتٍ مُفَصَّلَاتٍ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا وَكَانُوا قَوْماً مُجْرِم۪ينَ ## Transcription Faarsalna AAalayhimu attoofanawaljarada walqummala waddafadiAAawaddama ayatin mufassalatinfastakbaroo wakanoo qawman mujrimeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley So We sent down on them floods, locusts, lice, frogs and blood, Signs, clear and distinct, but they proved arrogant and were an evildoing people. ### Progressive Muslims So We sent them the flood, and the locust, and the lice, and the frogs, and the blood; all detailed signs; but they turned arrogant, they were a criminal people. ### Shabbir Ahmed Their System was too inefficient to fight off natural calamities, such as, floods, swarms of locusts, diseases of crops, livestock and humans. These were open signs for them to wake up to reform, but Pharaoh and his chiefs were too arrogant to accept responsibility, and too involved in luxury to take action. But they were arrogant and became a guilty folk. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Then We afflicted them with a great flood [1] and locusts, and the lice[2] , and the frogs, and the blood. All these were distinct signs and yet they remained haughty. They were a wicked people. _Footnotes_ - [1] This probably refers to the torrential rain accompanied by hailstorm. While we do not totally exclude the possibility of other kinds of storms, we are inclined to the view, that it probably signifies hailstorm since the Bible specifically mentions that. (See Exodus 9: 23-4 - Ed.) - [2] The word used in the text - qummal - denotes lice, fleas, small locusts, mosquitoes, and weevil. This rather general term has been used in the Qur'an probably to suggest that while men were afflicted with lice and fleas, weevil destroyed the barns. (Cf. Exodus 7-12. See also Tafhim al-ur'an, (al-Zukhruf 43, n. 43.) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And there, We plagued them at intervals with: ### Bijan Moeinian I sent upon them the storm [causing many deaths], the locusts, the lice, the frogs and the rain of blood.
