Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) — سورة الأعراف - **Verse:** 127 / 206 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 164 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-araf/verse-127 ## Arabic وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِنْ قَوْمِ فِرْعَوْنَ اَتَذَرُ مُوسٰى وَقَوْمَهُ لِيُفْسِدُوا فِي الْاَرْضِ وَيَذَرَكَ وَاٰلِهَتَكَۜ قَالَ سَنُقَتِّلُ اَبْنَٓاءَهُمْ وَنَسْتَحْـي۪ نِسَٓاءَهُمْۚ وَاِنَّا فَوْقَهُمْ قَاهِرُونَ ## Transcription Waqala almalao min qawmi firAAawnaatatharu moosa waqawmahu liyufsidoo fee al-ardiwayatharaka waalihataka qala sanuqattilu abnaahumwanastahyee nisaahum wa-inna fawqahum qahiroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley The ruling circle of Pharaoh’s people said, ‘Are you going to leave Musa and his people to cause corruption in the earth and abandon you and your gods?’ He said, ‘We will kill their sons and let their women live. We have absolute power over them!’ ### Progressive Muslims And the commanders from among the people of Pharaoh said: "Will you let Moses and his people corrupt the land, and abandon you and your gods" He said: "We will kill their children and rape their women; we will be supreme over them. [Pharaoh] replied: "We shall slay their sons in great numbers and shall spare [only] their women: for, verily, we hold sway over them!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: (O King), wilt thou suffer Moses and his people to make mischief in the land, and flout thee and thy gods? He said: We will slay their sons and spare their women, for lo! we are in power over them. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The elders of Pharaoh's people said: 'Will you leave alone Moses and his people to spread mischief in the land, and forsake you and your gods?' Pharaoh replied: 'We will kill their male children and spare their female ones.[1] For indeed we hold irresistible sway over them.' _Footnotes_ - [1] There were two periods of persecution. The first was during the reign of Rameses 11 and took place before Moses' birth, whereas the second period of persecution started after Moses' assumption to the office of prophethood. Common to both periods is the killing of the male issue of Israelites while the female was spared. It was a calculated design to rob the Israelites of their identity and to bring about their forcible assimilation. An inscription discovered during the archaeological excavations of 1896 probably belongs to this period. According to this inscription, Pharaoh Minpetah rounds off the narration of his achievements and victories in these words: 'The Israel have been exterminated, and no seed of them is left.' For further explanation see(al-Mu'min 40: 25) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab There and then said those of Pharaoh's people in whose hearts reigned vice, malice and falsehood: "O Pharaoh, would you set Mussa and his people free so as to create discord in the land and play the mischief with your subjects and renounce you and your gods, disclaiming obedience to your statutes!". " But, Pharaoh said: We will kill their sons, and to serve our purpose, spare their women, and we will gain mastery over them and be their supreme controlling power". ### Bijan Moeinian The chief administrators of Pharaoh turned to him and said: "Now what? Do you let Moses and his people to rebel and mock at your gods?" The Pharaoh replied: "I will kill their males and leave their females to live [and subject them to the humiliation] so that they understand that I have the higher hand. ### Al-Hilali & Khan The chiefs of Fir‘aun’s (Pharaoh) people said: "Will you leave Mûsâ (Moses) and his people to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon you and your gods?" He said: "We will kill their sons, and let live their women, and we have indeed irresistible power over them." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Said the chiefs of Pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Moses and his people, to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thy gods?"
