Surah Al-'Ankabut (The Spider) — سورة العنكبوت - **Verse:** 31 / 69 · **Juz:** 20 · **Mushaf page:** 399 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ankabut/verse-31 ## Arabic وَلَمَّا جَٓاءَتْ رُسُلُـنَٓا اِبْرٰه۪يمَ بِالْبُشْرٰىۙ قَالُٓوا اِنَّا مُهْلِكُٓوا اَهْلِ هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِۚ اِنَّ اَهْلَهَا كَانُوا ظَالِم۪ينَۚ ## Transcription Walamma jaat rusulunaibraheema bilbushra qaloo innamuhlikoo ahli hathihi alqaryati inna ahlaha kanoothalimeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When Our messengers came with the good news to Ibrahim, they said, ‘We are going to destroy the people of this city. Truly its inhabitants are wrongdoers.’ ### Progressive Muslims And when Our messengers came to Abraham with good news, they then said: "We are to destroy the people of such a town, for its people have been wicked. " ### Shabbir Ahmed When Our Messengers brought the glad news to Abraham (of a son Isaac), they also said, "We are appointed to herald the annihilation of that town, for its people are wrongdoers. " (Abraham lived in Hebron, Palestine about 1800 B.C. Indeed, its people have been wrongdoers." ### Muhammad Asad And so, when Our [heavenly] messengers came to Abraham with the glad tiding [of the birth of Isaac], they [also] said, "Behold, we are about to destroy the people of that land, for its people are truly evildoers!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary When Our emissaries brought the good news[1] to Abraham, and said (to him): "We are surely going to destroy the inhabitants[2] of this city; its inhabitants are immersed in wrong-doing." _Footnotes_ - [1] According to the details given of this in Surah Hud and Surah A1-Hijr, the angels who had been sent to bring the torment on the people of the Prophet Lot (peace be upon him), first came to the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and gave him the good news of the birth of the Prophet Isaac (peace be upon him) and after him of the Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him). Then they told him that they had been sent to destroy the people of Lot (peace be upon him). - [2] "This habitation" refers to the territory of the people of Lot (peace be upon him). The Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) at that time resided in the Palestinian city of Hebron, now called Al-Khalil. A few miles to the southeast of this city lies that part of the Dead Sea, which was once inhabited by the people of Lot (peace be upon him) and which is now under sea water. It is a low lying area and is clearly visible from the hill country of Hebron. That is why the angels, pointing towards it, had said "We are going to destroy this habitation." See( E.N. 114 of Surah Ash- Shuara). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And when Our Messengers -The angels- visited Ibrahim and intimated to him the joyful tidings (of the birth of a son in that advanced age) they said to him; "we will be reducing this town and its inhabitants to a useless form, they have been wrongful of actions. " ### Bijan Moeinian [In response to the Lot’s prayer, ] God sent His messengers [passing through Abraham’s land] giving Abraham the good news [of the birth of Prophet Isaac as well as the prophet hood of Isaac’s unborn son, i. e., Jacob] saying: "We are in our way to destroy those people [of Sodom] who have gone too far in wickedness. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when Our Messengers came to Ibrâhîm (Abraham) with the glad tidings they said: "Verily, we are going to destroy the people of this [Lût (Lot’s)] town (i.e. the town of Sodom in Palestine); truly, its people have been Zâlimûn [wrong-doers, polytheists disobedient to Allâh, and who belied their Messenger Lût (Lot)]." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali When Our Messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said: "We are indeed going to destroy the people of this township: for truly they are (addicted to) crime." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran When Our messenger-angels came to Abraham with the good news ˹of the birth of Isaac˺, they said, "We are going to destroy the people of this city ˹of Sodom˺, for its people have persisted in wrongdoing." ### Taqi Usmani And when Our messengers came to Ibrāhīm with the good news, they said, "We are going to destroy the people of this town.
