Surah Al-'Ankabut (The Spider) — سورة العنكبوت - **Verse:** 29 / 69 · **Juz:** 20 · **Mushaf page:** 398 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ankabut/verse-29 ## Arabic اَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَأْتُونَ الرِّجَالَ وَتَقْطَعُونَ السَّب۪يلَ وَتَأْتُونَ ف۪ي نَاد۪يكُمُ الْمُنْكَرَۜ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِه۪ٓ اِلَّٓا اَنْ قَالُوا ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابِ اللّٰهِ اِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِق۪ينَ ## Transcription A-innakum lata/toona arrijalawataqtaAAoona assabeela wata/toona fee nadeekumualmunkara fama kana jawaba qawmihi illaan qaloo i/tina biAAathabi Allahi inkunta mina assadiqeen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Do you lie with men and waylay them on the road and commit depravities within your gatherings?’ the only answer of his people was to say, ‘Bring us Allah’s punishment if you are telling the truth. ’ ### Progressive Muslims "You sexually approach men, and you cut off the lineage, and you bring all vice to your society. " But the only response from his people was to Say: "Bring us God's retribution, if you are being truthful!" ### Shabbir Ahmed Do you not indeed approach males, and cut off the way of Nature? Do you not commit highway robbery? And do you not commit shameful vices openly in your assemblies?" But his people's only answer was, "Bring down upon us the punishment of Allah if you are a man of truth. " And the answer of his people was not but they said, "Bring us the punishment of Allah, if you should be of the truthful." ### Muhammad Asad Must you indeed approach men [with lust], and thus cut across the way [of nature]? and must you commit these shameful deeds in your open] assemblies?" But his people’s only answer was, "Bring down upon us God’s chastisement, if thou art a man of truth!” ### Marmaduke Pickthall For come ye not in unto males, and cut ye not the road (for travellers), and commit ye not abomination in your meetings? But the answer of his folk was only that they said: Bring Allah's doom upon us if thou art a truthteller! ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary What! Do you go to men[1] (to satisfy your lust), engage in highway robbery, and commit evil deeds in your gatherings?"[2] Then they had no answer to offer other than to say: "Bring Allah's chastisement upon us if you are truthful.” _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, "You satisfy your sex desire with the males." As stated in (Surah Al-Aaraf: Ayat 81), “you gratify your lust with men instead of women.” - [2] That is, "You do not even hide yourself when you commit this filthy act, but commit it openly in your assemblies, in front of others." The same has been stated in(Surah An-Naml: Ayat 54), thus: “Do you commit the indecency while you see it?” ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "You certainly have sensuous desire for men, " he added, with whom you practice Sodomy and you commit highway robberies and you force people to immorality and in your society you commit abomination. And what was the response of his people. but to say: " we defy you to precipitate Allah's retributive punishment if indeed you are declaring the truth!" ### Bijan Moeinian "[What is wrong with you that] you practice homosexuality, robbery and all kind of indecencies in your assemblies [an orgy of sins. ]" They jokingly responded: “If you are truthful [and if there is such thing as God], then let us taste His punishment!” ### Al-Hilali & Khan "Verily, you practise sodomy with men, and rob the wayfarer (travellers)! And practise Al-Munkar (disbelief and polytheism and every kind of evil wicked deed) in your meetings." But his people gave no answer except that they said: "Bring Allâh’s Torment upon us if you are one of the truthful." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali "Do ye indeed approach men, and cut off the highway?- and practise wickedness (even) in your councils?" But his people gave no answer but this: they said: "Bring us the Wrath of Allah if thou tellest the truth." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Do you really lust after ˹other˺ men, abuse the travellers, and practice immorality ˹openly˺ in your gatherings?" His people’s only response was to say ˹mockingly˺: "Bring Allah’s punishment upon us, if what you say is true.” ### Taqi Usmani Is it (not) a fact that you go for men (to satisfy your lust) and rob the wayfarers and commit evil in your gathering?" Bunun üzerine kavminin cevabı yalnızca: "Eğer doğru söylüyor isen, bize Tanrı'nın azabını getir" demek oldu. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim "Siz her halde erkeklere gidecek, yol kesecek, toplantı yerinizde meşru olmayanı yapacak mısınız"? Kavminin cevabı: "Eğer doğru söyleyenlerdensen Allahın azabını getir bize" demelerinden başkası olmadı. ### İbni Kesir Siz; erkeklere yaklaşıyor, yol kesiyor ve toplantılarınızda fena şeyler yapmıyor musunuz?
