Surah Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) — سورة الأنفال - **Verse:** 39 / 75 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 180 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-anfal/verse-39 ## Arabic وَقَاتِلُوهُمْ حَتّٰى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدّ۪ينُ كُلُّهُ لِلّٰهِۚ فَاِنِ انْتَهَوْا فَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَص۪يرٌ ## Transcription Waqatiloohum hatta latakoona fitnatun wayakoona addeenu kulluhu lillahifa-ini intahaw fa-inna Allaha bima yaAAmaloona baseer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Fight them until there is no more fitna and the deen is Allah’s alone. If they stop, Allah sees what they do, ### Progressive Muslims And fight them all until there is no more oppression, and so that the entire system is God's. But if they cease, then God is watcher over what they do. ### Shabbir Ahmed Fight and subdue those who persist in aggression until persecution is no more, and absolute freedom of religion is established. People must be able to adopt a religion only for God's Approval, and as free choice (2:193), (12:108). If they cease from aggression, Allah is the Seer of their actions, and therefore you shall leave them alone. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And fight them until there is no means of denial, and the doctrine is entirely for God; and if they cease, God sees what they do. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And fight them all until there is no more oppression, and the entire system is for God. And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do. ### Muhammad Asad And fight against them until there is no more oppression and all worship is devoted to God alone. And if they desist-behold, God sees all that they do; ### Marmaduke Pickthall And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And fight against them until the mischief ends and the way prescribed by Allah - the whole of it -prevail[1] Then, if they give up mischief, surely Allah sees what they do. _Footnotes_ - [1] This is a reiteration of the purpose, mentioned earlier in al-Baqarah 2: 193, for which Muslims are required to wage war. The purpose is two-fold. Negatively speaking, the purpose is to eradicate 'mischief'. The positive purpose consists of establishing a state of affairs wherein all obedience is rendered to God alone. This alone is the purpose for which the believers may, rather should, fight. Fighting for any other purpose is not lawful. Nor does it behove men of faith to take part in wars for worldly purposes. (For further explanation see Towards Understanding the Qur'an, vol. 1, (al-Baqarah 2, nn.. 204 and 205, pp. 152-3 - Ed.) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab So conditioned, then, fight against them the good fight of faith until persecution comes to an end and concord replaces discord and Allah's system of faith and worship prevails, and people take upon themselves: The recognition of Allah and His control of destiny, His rightful claim to obedience, reverence and worship, and the general mental and moral attitude resulting from this belief and its effect upon the individual and the people at large. If they desist and turn to Allah, He certainly is Bassirun(graceful and kind to his servants), He sees all that they do. ### Bijan Moeinian Fight with the disbelievers till they give up the persecution and a God pleasing "way of life" is established. God sees what they do [and, therefore, knows whether or not they are sincere in their “cease fire.”] ### Al-Hilali & Khan And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world[1]]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.[2] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Fight against them until there is no more persecution—and ˹your˺ devotion will be entirely to Allah. But if they desist, then surely Allah is All-Seeing of what they do. ### Taqi Usmani And fight them until there is no Fitnah (mischief), and total obedience becomes for Allah. But if they desist, then surely Allah is Watchful of what they do. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And keep on fighting them till there is no more unrest (commotion) or injustice (cruelty), and there exists justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; But if they stop, surely, Allah sees all that they do. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And (O Muslims!) fight them until there is no more persecution (in the name of religion) and adopting a (certain) religion is wholly for the sake of Allâh, but if they desist, then surely Allâh is Watchful of what they do (and they will not be done injustice to). ### Ali Quli Qarai Fight them until faithlessness is no more, and religion becomes exclusively for Allah.
