Surah Al-Anfal (The Spoils of War) — سورة الأنفال - **Verse:** 11 / 75 · **Juz:** 9 · **Mushaf page:** 177 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-anfal/verse-11 ## Arabic اِذْ يُغَشّ۪يكُمُ النُّعَاسَ اَمَنَةً مِنْهُ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مَٓاءً لِيُطَهِّرَكُمْ بِه۪ وَيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمْ رِجْزَ الشَّيْطَانِ وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلٰى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ الْاَقْدَامَۜ ## Transcription Ith yughashsheekumu annuAAasaamanatan minhu wayunazzilu AAalaykum mina assama-imaan liyutahhirakum bihi wayuthhiba AAankumrijza ashshaytani waliyarbita AAalaquloobikum wayuthabbita bihi al-aqdam ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley And when He overcame you with sleep, making you feel secure, and sent you down water from heaven to purify you and remove the taint of Shaytan from you, and to fortify your hearts and make your feet firm. ### Progressive Muslims Sleep overcame you from Him to give you peace; and He sent down to you water from the sky to cleanse you with it and cause the affliction of the devil to leave you; and so that He may strengthen your hearts and set firm your feet. ### Shabbir Ahmed Remember how it was when He caused inner calm to enfold you, as an assurance from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky. That He might refresh you and free you from the fear of the satanic act of the enemy (as they confiscated the water wells). On both occasions, when prevalent conditions should have produced intense fear and panic among them, God filled their hearts with such peace and tranquillity that they were overpowered with drowsiness. - [2] This refers to the heavy downpour on the night preceding the Battle of Badr. It helped the Muslims in three ways. First, it provided them with an abundant water supply which they quickly stored in large reservoirs. Second, rain compacted the loose sand in the upper part of the valley where the Muslims had pitched their tents. This helped the Muslims plant their feet firmly and facilitated their movement. Third, where the Quray'sh army was stationed in the lower part of the valley, the ground turned marshy. The defilement caused by Satan which occurs in the verse refers to the fear and panic which initially, afflicted the Muslims. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And there did Allah replace the emotion of sorrow and grief which was caused by fear of the unpredictable outcome by peace of mind and sense of security thus inducing your eyes to take themselves to slumber. He sent down from the floor of the vault of heaven rain - water to free you people from foreign matter as well as from moral and spiritual pollution and from the incitement of evil instigated by AL-Shaytan (Satan) and by those with characteristics befitting Him, and to do your hearts good and set your feet firm. ### Bijan Moeinian I showered you with peace and assurance up to the point of drowsiness.
