Surah Al-Anbiya (The Prophets) — سورة الأنبياء - **Verse:** 36 / 112 · **Juz:** 17 · **Mushaf page:** 324 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-anbiya/verse-36 ## Arabic وَاِذَا رَاٰكَ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُٓوا اِنْ يَتَّخِذُونَكَ اِلَّا هُزُواًۜ اَهٰذَا الَّذ۪ي يَذْكُرُ اٰلِهَتَكُمْۚ وَهُمْ بِذِكْرِ الرَّحْمٰنِ هُمْ كَافِرُونَ ## Transcription Wa-itha raaka allatheenakafaroo in yattakhithoonaka illa huzuwan ahathaallathee yathkuru alihatakum wahum bithikriarrahmani hum kafiroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When those who are kafir see you, they only make a mockery out of you: ‘Is this the one who makes mention of your gods?’ Yet they are kuffar about the mention of the All-Merciful. ### Progressive Muslims And when those who reject see you, they take you for mockery: "Is this the one who speaks about your gods!" While in the remembrance of the Almighty they are rejecters! ### Shabbir Ahmed (O Prophet) whenever the rejecters see you, they make you a target of their mockery, saying, "Is this the one who talks of your gods?" And yet, it is they who deny all mention of (the True God) the Beneficent. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And when those who ignore warning see thee, they take thee only in mockery: “Is this he who mentions your gods!” And they — of the remembrance of the Almighty — they are deniers. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Andwhen those who reject see you, they take you for mockery: "Is this the one who speaks about your gods!" Meanwhile, they remain totally heedless of the message from the Most Gracious. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira But when the unbelievers see you they make fun of you (and say): "Is this the one who mentions your gods (deridingly)?" Yet in Ar-Rahman they disbelieve! ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when those who disbelieve see you, [O Muúammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one who insults your gods?" And they are, at the mention of the Most Merciful, disbelievers. ### Muhammad Asad But [thus it is:] whenever they who are bent on denying the truth consider thee, they make thee but a target of their mockery, [saying to one another,] "Is this the one who speaks [so contemptuously] of your gods?" and yet, it is they themselves who, at [every] mention of the Most Gracious, are wont to deny the truth! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when those who disbelieve behold thee, they but choose thee out for mockery, (saying): Is this he who maketh mention of your gods? And they would deny all mention of the Beneficent. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary When the unbelievers see you they make you an object of fun, saying: "Is he the one who mentions your gods?"[1] They say so, and yet they reject with disdain the very mention of the Most Compassionate Lord.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] It should be noted that this sentence contains only the reason why they scoffed at him, but does not refer to the expression of scoff itself. Obviously, the disbelievers must have been using some other words or expressions of derision to avenge themselves on the Prophet (peace be upon him) for his rejecting their self-made deities. - [2] This is to rebuke the disbelieves as if to say: You cherish so much love of your self-made idols and false gods that you cannot tolerate anything against them. So much so, that you scoff at the Messenger of Allah, and you are not ashamed when you hear the name of the Merciful and discard His mention with disdain. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And when the infidels see you O Muhammad they receive you with nothing but disdain and scorn which ride sparkling in their eyes and they say: "Is this the one who blasphemes your gods! And when Al Rahman is mentioned, their countenances speak blasphemy against Him. ### Bijan Moeinian When you see the disbelievers, they will make fun of you and say: "Is this the man who does not believe in gods?" In fact, they are the ones who disbelieve in the Most Gracious. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when those who disbelieved (in the Oneness of Allâh) see you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), they take you not except for mockery (saying): "Is this the one who talks (badly) about your gods?" While they disbelieve at the mention of the Most Gracious (Allâh). [Tafsir Al-Qurtubî]. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali When the Unbelievers see thee, they treat thee not except with ridicule. "Is this," (they say), "the one who talks of your gods?" and they blaspheme at the mention of (Allah) Most Gracious! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran When the disbelievers see you ˹O Prophet˺, they only make fun of you, ˹saying,˺ "Is this the one who speaks ˹ill˺ of your gods?" while they disbelieve at the mention of the Most Compassionate. ### Taqi Usmani When disbelievers see you, they do nothing but take you in jest (saying to one another,) "Is this the one who talks of your gods?" - while they themselves reject even talking of the RaHmān (All-Merciful). ### Abdul Haleem When the disbelievers see you, they laugh at you: ‘Is this the one who talks about your gods?’ They reject any talk of the Lord of Mercy. ### Arthur John Arberry When the unbelievers behold thee, they take thee only for mockery: 'Ha, is this the one who makes mention of your gods?' We will test you with evil and with good, as a trial; and unto Us will you be returned. ### Mahmoud Ghali And when the ones who have disbelieved see you, decidedly they take you only for mockery, (saying), "Is this the one who makes mention of (i. e., mentions (their uselessness) your gods?" And they are they who in the Remembrance of The All-Merciful are the ones (who) are disbelievers. ### George Sale When the unbelievers see thee, they receive thee only with scoffing, saying, is this he who mentioneth your gods with contempt? Halbuki çok esirgeyici Allahın (indirdiği) Kur'anı inkar ile kafir olanlar onlardır, onların kendileridir. ### İbni Kesir Küfredenler seni gördükleri zaman, alaya almaktan başka bir şey yapmazlar. İşte Rahman'ın kitabını inkar edenler onlardır. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Ama hakkı inkara şartlanmış olan bu insanlar ne zaman seni gözönüne alsalar, (birbirlerine:) "Bu mu sizin tanrılarınızı diline dolayan?" (diyerek) seni alaya almaktan başka bir şey yapmazlar.
