_Footnotes_
- [1] Had those people also ascribed partners to God like the people of Arabia, they would not have achieved the positions they had attained. Some might perhaps have earned places in the rogues' gallery of history as either ruthless conquerors or monuments to greed. But had they not shunned polytheism and adhered to their exclusive and unadulterated devotion to God, they would certainly neither have had the honour of becoming the source of light and guidance to others nor of assuming the leadership of the pious and the God-fearing.

### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab

This is the true accord of Allah - the union of His will and affections - attuned to the spirit of truth guiding whom He will of His servants into all truth. Had they incorporated with Him other deities they would have been denied the prerogative of Prophethood besides the loss incurred. Their hopes would have been doomed to disappointment and their deeds to worthlessness.

### Bijan Moeinian

This is the favor of God. He chooses to guide, among His worshippers, whoever He decides [and deserve such guidance.] If His worshippers choose to worship others (such as idols, women, children, wealth, any boss or governor, etc.) beside Him, then He will nullify their [good] deeds.

### Al-Hilali & Khan
