Surah Al-An'am (The Cattle) — سورة الأنعام - **Verse:** 36 / 165 · **Juz:** 7 · **Mushaf page:** 131 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-anam/verse-36 ## Arabic اِنَّمَا يَسْتَج۪يبُ الَّذ۪ينَ يَسْمَعُونَۜ وَالْمَوْتٰى يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللّٰهُ ثُمَّ اِلَيْهِ يُرْجَعُونَ ## Transcription Innama yastajeebu allatheenayasmaAAoona walmawta yabAAathuhumu Allahuthumma ilayhi yurjaAAoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Only those who can hear respond. As for the dead, Allah will raise them up, then to Him they will be returned. ### Progressive Muslims Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, God will resurrect them, then to Him they will return. ### Shabbir Ahmed Only those can accept who hear and listen with an open mind (10:100). The living dead will only listen when they use their faculties (2:260), or when Allah will raise them to the second life; unto Him will they be returned. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation There respond only those who hear; and the dead, God raises them — then to Him will they be returned. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, Allah will raise them up; then unto Him they will be returned. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Only they who listen can respond to the call of the Truth; as for the dead,[1] Allah will raise them and then to Him they will be returned. _Footnotes_ - [1] 'Those who hear' refers to those whose consciences are alive, who have not atrophied their intellect and reason, and who have not closed their hearts to the Truth out of irrational prejudice and menta! inflexibility. In contrast to such people are those who are characterized as 'dead' - who blindly follow the old familiar beaten tracks, and can never deviate from the ways they have inherited, even when these ways are plainly at variance with the Truth. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab It is only those who bow down their ears and open their heats’ ears that favourably respond to heaven's call and to spiritual prompting, whereas those destitute of spiritual life are as good as dead to admonition and the dead shall only hear when Allah resurrects them, be it in this world or in the world to come when back to Him they return. ### Bijan Moeinian Only those will [hear and] respond who listen.
