Say: ‘Only Allah has knowledge of it. What will make you understand? It may be that the Last Hour is very near.’ ### Progressive Muslims The people ask you regarding the Hour. Say: "Its knowledge is with God. And for all that you know the Hour may be near!" ### Shabbir Ahmed People ask you about the Hour. Say, "The knowledge of the Hour is with Allah alone. Say: "Knowledge thereof rests with God alone; yet for all thou knowest, the Last Hour may well be near!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall Men ask thee of the Hour. Say: The knowledge of it is with Allah only. What can convey (the knowledge) unto thee? It may be that the Hour is nigh. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary People ask you concerning the Hour (of Resurrection).[1] Say: "Allah alone has knowledge of it. What do you know? Perhaps the Hour is nigh." _Footnotes_ - [1] The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) was generally asked this question by the disbelievers and the hypocrites. By this they did not mean to obtain any knowledge but they did so out of fun and jest. As a matter of fact, they did not believe in the coming of the Hereafter at all; they regarded its concept as an empty threat only. They did not ask about the time of its coming so that they could set their affairs right, but what they really meant was: "O Muhammad (peace be upon him), we have been doing everything to frustrate your mission, and you have not been able to do any harm to us so far; now let us know as to when will Resurrection take place when we will be taken to task by Allah." ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab People call upon you O Muhammad for information relative to the point of time at which the predetermined Eventful Hour of Judgement takes place! Say to them: it is only Allah and Him alone Who knows when! "You never know the Final Hour may well be quite soon". ### Bijan Moeinian People will ask you about the end of the world. Let them know that only God knows about it. As far as people are concerned, they should be prepared as though it will take place within a few moment. ### Al-Hilali & Khan People ask you concerning the Hour, say: "The knowledge of it is with Allâh only. What do you know?
