Surah Al-Ahzab (The Clans) — سورة الأحزاب - **Verse:** 28 / 73 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 420 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahzab/verse-28 ## Arabic يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِاَزْوَاجِكَ اِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَا وَز۪ينَتَهَا فَتَعَالَيْنَ اُمَتِّعْكُنَّ وَاُسَرِّحْكُنَّ سَرَاحاً جَم۪يلاً ## Transcription Ya ayyuha annabiyyuqul li-azwajika in kuntunna turidna alhayataaddunya wazeenataha fataAAalaynaomattiAAkunna waosarrihkunna sarahan jameela ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley O Prophet, tell your wives: ‘If you desire the life of the dunya and its finery, come and I will give you all you need and release you with kindness. ### Progressive Muslims O prophet, say to your wives: "If you are seeking this worldly life and its vanities, then come, I will make a provision for you and release you in an amicable manner. " ### Shabbir Ahmed (Now in a state of affluence) O Prophet! Tell your wives, "If you desire the life of this world and its glitter - well, then, I shall provide you to your contentment and let you go in a becoming manner. I will content you and will release you with a fair release. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary O Prophet,[1] tell your wives: "If you seek the world and its embellishments, then come and I will make some provision for you and release you in an honourable way. _Footnotes_ - [1] The verses from here to 35 were revealed in the period contiguous to the battle of the Trench and the raid on Bani Quraizah, whose background we have touched upon in the Introduction to this Surah. According to a tradition related in Muslim on the authority of Jabir bin Abdullah, "One day when Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) visited the Prophet (peace be upon him), they saw that his wives were sitting around him and he was quiet. Addressing Umar, he said: They are sitting around me as you see: they are asking for money for household expenditure." At this both the companions rebuked their daughters and said, “Why do you embarrass the Prophet (peace be upon him) and demand from him that which he does not have.” This event shows how economically hard pressed the Prophet (peace be upon him) was at that time, and how distressed and embarrassed he was feeling at his wives’ demand for domestic expenditure during the period when a bitter conflict was going on between Islam and paganism. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab O you the prophet, say to your wives: "If you are interested in life here and in its mundane splendour then come I will fit you out with what is necessary for your enjoyment and your indemnity and set you free gracefully". ### Bijan Moeinian O’ Prophet, say to your wives [who were apparently not satisfied with their economic situations and, like most ordinary people, were looking for more]: "If your primary interest is the vanities of this world, no problem.
