Surah Al-Ahzab (The Clans) — سورة الأحزاب - **Verse:** 22 / 73 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 419 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahzab/verse-22 ## Arabic وَلَمَّا رَاَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الْاَحْزَابَۙ قَالُوا هٰذَا مَا وَعَدَنَا اللّٰهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَصَدَقَ اللّٰهُ وَرَسُولُهُۘ وَمَا زَادَهُمْ اِلَّٓا ا۪يمَاناً وَتَسْل۪يماًۜ ## Transcription Walamma raa almu/minoona al-ahzabaqaloo hatha ma waAAadana Allahuwarasooluhu wasadaqa Allahu warasooluhu wamazadahum illa eemanan watasleema ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley When the muminun saw the Confederates they said: ‘This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us. Allah and His Messenger told us the truth.’ It only increased them in iman and in submission. ### Progressive Muslims And when the believers saw the opponents, they said: "This is what God and His messenger have promised us, and God and His messenger are truthful. " This only increased their faith and their surrender. ### Shabbir Ahmed And when the believers saw the clans, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us. Truly spoke Allah and His Messenger!" And it only added to their faith and their zeal in submission. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And when the believers saw the parties, they said: “This is what God and His messenger promised us, and God and His messenger spoke the truth!” And it only increased them in faith and surrender. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And when the believers saw the Confederates, they said: "This is what God and His messenger have promised us, and God and His messenger are truthful." This (dangerous situation) only strengthened their faith and augmented their submission. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira When the faithful saw (the armies of) the allied tribes, they said: "This is what God and His Apostle had promised us; and God and His Apostle say the truth;" and this enhanced their faith and obedience. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth. " And it increased them only in faith and acceptance. ### Muhammad Asad And [so, ] when the believers saw the Con­federates [advancing against them], they said, "This is what God and His Apostle have promised us!"- and, “Truly spoke God and His Apostle!” and all this but increased their faith and their readiness to surrender themselves unto God. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when the true believers saw the clans, they said: This is that which Allah and His messenger promised us. Allah and His messenger are true. It did but confirm them in their faith and resignation. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary As for the true believers,[1] when they saw the invading confederates, they cried out: "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us, and what Allah and His Messenger said was absolutely true."[2] This only increased their faith and submission. [3] _Footnotes_ - [1] After drawing attention to the model of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Allah now presents the model of his companions so that the character of the false claimants to faith and of the sincere followers of the Messenger (peace be upon him) is clearly contrasted. - [2] Although both were alike apparently in the affirmation of the faith, both were counted as Muslims, and both attended at the Prayers, they were separated from each other as soon as the time of the trial approached, and it became clear who were loyal to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) and who were Muslims only in name. - [3] Here, one should keep( verse 12) in view. There it was said that when the hypocrites and the people with diseased hearts found themselves surrounded by a huge force of ten to twelve thousand men from the front and by the Bani Quraizah from behind, they openly started saying: "The promises that Allah and His Messenger had made with us were nothing but a delusion. We were promised that if we believed in Allah’s religion, His succor would be at our back and we would rule Arabia and the world outside and all the wealth of Caesar and Chosroes will be ours, but here we are that the whole of Arabia is bent upon exterminating us, and there is no sign yet of the armies of the angels in sight, who would save us and protect us against this grave calamity." Now they are being told: “One meaning of the promise of Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) was that which was understood by these false claimants to faith. The other meaning is that which is understood by the sincere and true Muslims. When they saw the storms of danger gathering, they too remembered the promises of Allah, but these promises did not mean that as soon as they affirmed the faith they would overwhelm and subdue the whole world without the slightest effort, and the angels would come to perform their coronation, but the promises actually meant that they would have to pass through severe trials, endure extreme hardships and afflictions, offer supreme sacrifices; then only will Allah bless them with His grace and they will be granted successes of the world and the Hereafter, which Allah has promised to His believing servants. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab (In contrast to the attitude of the hypocrites) the manner of acting of the faithful was representative of their feeling. When they saw the forces of the confederates they immediately exclaimed: "This is the promise made to us by Allah and His Messenger" -labour, effort and endurance shall accomplish victory- and the promise of Allah and His Messenger is truth personified, an inspiration actuating them with the feeling of confidence and obedience and made them present a bold front. ### Bijan Moeinian As to the true believers, when they saw the [12,men army of the] enemy ready to attack, [instead of loosing faith] they said: " This is what God and His Prophet had promised [that we are going to be tested in difficult situations]". This [desperate] situation instead increased their belief! ### Al-Hilali & Khan And when the believers saw Al-Ahzâb (the Confederates), they said: "This is what Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) had promised us; and Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) had spoken the truth. And it only added to their Faith and to their submissiveness (to Allâh). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali When the Believers saw the Confederate forces, they said: "This is what Allah and his Messenger had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger told us what was true." And it only added to their faith and their zeal in obedience. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran When the believers saw the enemy alliance, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger had promised us. The promise of Allah and His Messenger has come true." And this only increased them in faith and submission. ### Taqi Usmani When the believers saw the coalition forces, they said, "This is what Allah and His messenger had promised to us, and Allah and His messenger had told the truth." It only improved them further in faith and submission. ### Abdul Haleem When the believers saw the joint forces, they said, ‘This is what God and His Messenger promised us: the promise of God and His Messenger is true,’ and this only served to increase their faith and submission to God. ### Arthur John Arberry When the believers saw the Confederates they said, 'This is what God and His Messenger promised us, and God and His Messenger have spoken truly. ' And it only increased them in faith and surrender. ### E. Aziz Verily, you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. ### Mahmoud Ghali And as soon as the believers saw the (allied) parties they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger have spoken sincerely. " And in no way did it increase them except in belief and submission. ### George Sale When the true believers saw the confederates, they said, this is what God and his apostle have foretold us; and God and his apostle have spoken the truth: And it only increased their faith and resignation. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And when the believers saw the Confederates (the armies and groups against Islam), they said; "This is what Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad) had promised us, and Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad) told us what was true. " And it only added to their faith and their true cause (for Islam) in obedience. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And as soon as the believers saw (the troops of) the confederates they said, `This is what Allâh and His Messenger promised us (about the defeat and discomfiture of the hosts of disbelievers and eventual victory of Islam); and Allâh and His Messenger spoke the truth. Ve (bu,) yalnızca onların inançlarını ve teslimiyetlerini arttırdı. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Mü'minler (düşman) orduları (nı) görünce: "İşte bu, Allahın ve Resulünün bize va'd etdiği şeydir. Allah ve peygamberi doğru söylemişdir" dediler. (Bu), onların imanlarını, teslimiyyetlerini artırmakdan başka bir şey yapmadı. ### İbni Kesir Mü'minler o birlikleri gördüklerinde dediler ki: İşte bize Allah'ın ve Rasulünün vaad ettiği bu. Allah ve Resulü doğru söylemiştir." dediler. Ve bu, onların sadece imanlarını ve teslimiyetlerini artırdı. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Müminler, düşman hizipleri gördüklerinde şöyle demişlerdir: "Allah'ın ve resulünün bize vaat ettiği işte budur. Ve Allah da resulü de doğru sözlüdür."
