Surah Al-Ahzab (The Clans) — سورة الأحزاب - **Verse:** 19 / 73 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 419 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahzab/verse-19 ## Arabic اَشِحَّةً عَلَيْكُمْۚ فَاِذَا جَٓاءَ الْخَوْفُ رَاَيْتَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ اِلَيْكَ تَدُورُ اَعْيُنُهُمْ كَالَّذ۪ي يُغْشٰى عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمَوْتِۚ فَاِذَا ذَهَبَ الْخَوْفُ سَلَقُوكُمْ بِاَلْسِنَةٍ حِدَادٍ اَشِحَّةً عَلَى الْخَيْرِۜ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ لَمْ يُؤْمِنُوا فَاَحْبَطَ اللّٰهُ اَعْمَالَهُمْۜ وَكَانَ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ يَس۪يراً ## Transcription Ashihhatan AAalaykum fa-itha jaaalkhawfu raaytahum yanthuroona ilayka tadooruaAAyunuhum kallathee yughsha AAalayhi minaalmawti fa-itha thahaba alkhawfu salaqookumbi-alsinatin hidadin ashihhatan AAalaalkhayri ola-ika lam yu/minoo faahbata AllahuaAAmalahum wakana thalika AAala Allahiyaseera ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley and are begrudging towards you. Then when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes rolling like people scared to death. But when fear departs they flay you with sharp tongues, grasping for wealth. Such people have no iman and Allah will make their actions come to nothing. That is easy for Allah. ### Progressive Muslims They are miserable towards you. Then, when fear comes, you see their eyes rolling, as if death had already come to them. But once the fear is gone, they lash-out at you with sharp tongues. They are miserable towards doing any good. These have not believed, so God nullifies their works. This is easy for God to do. ### Shabbir Ahmed They are miserly in dealing with you (believers). But when danger threatens, you can see them looking to you (for help, O Prophet), their eyes rolling in terror like one who is overshadowed by death. Yet once the fear has departed, they assail you believers with sharp tongues in their greed for wealth (from the spoil of war). These have never known belief, and, therefore, Allah makes all their deeds fruitless. That is easy for Allah (a spontaneous action of Allah's Law of Requital). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Begrudging you. Then when fear comes, thou seest them looking at thee, their eyes rolling like one overshadowed by death. But when the fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, begrudging good. Those have not believed, so God has made vain their deeds; and that is easy for God. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They are miserable towards you. Then, when fear comes, you see their eyes rolling, as if death had already come to them. But once the fear is gone, they lash-out at you with sharp tongues. They are miserable towards doing any good. These have not believed, so God nullifies their works. This is easy for God to do. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Also, they are too stingy when dealing with you. If anything threatens the community, you see their eyes rolling with fear, as if death had already come to them. Once the crisis is over, they whip you with sharp tongues. They are too stingy with their wealth. These are not believers, and, consequently, GOD has nullified their works. This is easy for GOD to do. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Being chary of helping you. But when danger appears you will find them looking at you with eyes turning like a man's in the swoon of death. Yet when the danger is past they lash you with sharp tongues, covetous of the best (of booty). Such as these have not come to belief. So God nullifies whatever they have done. This is how (the innate law of) God works inevitably. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Indisposed toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allah, easy. ### Muhammad Asad begrudging you all help. But then, when danger threatens, thou canst see them looking to thee [for help, O Prophet], their eyes rolling [in terror] like [the eyes of] one who is overshadowed by death: yet as soon as the danger has passed, they will assail you [believers] with sharp tongues, begrudging you all that is good! [People like] these have never known faith - and therefore God will cause all their works to come to nought: for this is indeed easy for God. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Being sparing of their help to you (believers). But when the fear cometh, then thou (Muhammad) seest them regarding thee with rolling eyes like one who fainteth unto death. Then, when the fear departeth, they scald you with sharp tongues in their greed for wealth (from the spoil). Such have not believed. Therefor Allah maketh their deeds fruitless. And that is easy for Allah. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They are utterly niggardly[1] (in coming to your aid). Whenever there is danger, you will see them looking at you, their eyes rolling as though they were on the verge of fainting at the approach of death. But when the danger passes away, their greed for wealth prompts them to greet you with their sharp, scissor-like tongues.[2] These are the ones who never truly believed, and so Allah has caused their deeds to be reduced to naught.[3] That is easy enough for Allah.[4] _Footnotes_ - [1] "Being miserly": Those who are not at all willing to spend their energies, their time, their wealth, etc. in any way in which the true believers are spending whatever they have. Not to speak of exerting themselves and braving the dangers, they do not want to cooperate with the believers in anything with an open heart. - [2] Lexically, this verse has two meanings: - [3] (1) When you return victorious from a war, they receive you warmly, and try to impress you with a sweet tongue that they too are sincere believers and they too have made their contribution to promote the cause of Islam, and therefore, they deserve a share from the booty. - [4] (2) If victory is attained, these people show great powers of the tongue at the time of the division of the spoils and make great demands for their shares, recounting their services for the cause of Islam. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They are liberal in promises, stingy in performance, in offering help and in financial aid. When fear and dread overwhelm you see them look at you with a countenance speaking a different language; their eyes roll and turn round in their sockets like someone about to faint or on whom death is casting its shadow. Yet no sooner dread be dispelled than they call you everything they can lay their tongues to and give you a lick with the rough sides of their tongues, being stingy in benefaction and benediction. Such persons did not really conform to Allah's system of faith and worship and by consequence did He destine them to be losers whose hopes are doomed to disappointment and their deeds to worthlessness, and nothing is easier for Allah to do. ### Bijan Moeinian When it comes to helping you [Mohammad], they are the least enthusiastic; but when a danger threatens them, they will look at you for help with eyes so frightened as though they are going to die any minute. When the danger is gone, they come to greet you with flattering words in hope of materialistic gains. These hypocrites are not believers and God will nullify their good deeds, which is the easiest thing for God to do. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Being miserly towards you (as regards help and aid in Allâh’s Cause). Then when fear comes, you will see them looking to you, their eyes revolving like (those of) one over whom hovers death; but when the fear departs, they will smite you with sharp tongues, miserly towards (spending anything in any) good (and only covetous of booty and wealth). Such have not believed. Therefore Allâh makes their deeds fruitless and that is ever easy for Allâh. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Covetous over you. Then when fear comes, thou wilt see them looking to thee, their eyes revolving, like (those of) one over whom hovers death: but when the fear is past, they will smite you with sharp tongues, covetous of goods. Such men have no faith, and so Allah has made their deeds of none effect: and that is easy for Allah. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran ˹They are˺ totally unwilling to assist you. When danger comes, you see them staring at you with their eyes rolling like someone in the throes of death. But once the danger is over, they slash you with razor-sharp tongues, ravenous for ˹worldly˺ gains. Such people have not ˹truly˺ believed, so Allah has rendered their deeds void. And that is easy for Allah. ### Taqi Usmani (and that too) with a greed against you (i.e. to extract a share of spoils from you). But when fear comes, you will see them looking towards you, rolling their eyes, like the one who gets faint because of death. Then once fear is gone, they assail you with sharp tongues, in greed for the good (i.e. the wealth acquired as spoils). These people did not accept faith (in real terms), therefore Allah has nullified their acts. All this is so easy for Allah. ### Abdul Haleem who begrudge you [believers] any help. When fear comes, you [Prophet] see them looking at you with eyes rolling like someone in their death throes; when fear has passed, they attack you with sharp tongues and begrudge you any good. Such men do not believe, and God brings their deeds to nothing- that is all too easy for God. ### Arthur John Arberry being niggardly towards you. When fear comes upon them, thou seest them looking at thee, their eyes rolling like one who swoons of death; but when the fear departs, they flay you with sharp tongues, being niggardly to possess the good things. Those have never believed; God has made their works to fail; and that is easy for God. ### E. Henry Palmer covetous towards you. ' When fear comes thou wilt see them looking towards thee, their eyes rolling like one fainting with death; but when the fear has passed away they will assail you with sharp tongues, covetous of the best. These have never believed, and God will make vain their works, for that is easy with God. ### Hamid S. Aziz Allah knows indeed those among you who hinder others and those who say to their brethren, "Come to us"; and they come not to the fight but a little, ### Mahmoud Ghali Being avaricious towards you. Then when fear comes, you would see them looking at you, (i.e., the Prophet) their eyes rolling like one who swoons of death; yet when the fear goes away, they flay you (i.e., the believers the pronoun is plural) with sharp tongues, being too avaricious to (give in) charity. Those have not (yet) believed, so Allah has frustrated their deeds; and that has been easy for Allah. ### George Sale being covetous towards you: But when fear cometh on them, thou seest them look unto thee for assistance, their eyes rolling about, like the eyes of him who fainteth by reason of the agonies of death: Yet when their fear is past, they inveigh against you with sharp tongues; being covetous of the best and most valuable part of the spoils. These believe not sincerely; wherefore God hath rendered their works of no avail; and this is easy with God. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Being stingy towards you; Then when the fear comes, you will see them looking to you with their eyes turning like (the eyes of a person) for whom death is near: But when the fear is gone, they will strike at you with their sharp tongues (with the) love of things. Men like this do not have faith, therefore, Allah has made their actions have no effect: And that is easy for Allah (to do). ### Amatul Rahman Omar They are niggardly (having no desire) to help you. But when danger is in sight you can see them looking towards you, their eyes rolling like (the eyes of) one who swoons due to (the agony of) death. But when (the time of) danger passes away they lash you (tauntingly) with the sharp (edges of their) tongues being niggardly of any good (coming to your way). These people have never, infact, believed (sincerely), so Allâh has rendered void all their activities (against Islam). And (doing) that is always an easy thing for Allâh. ### Ali Quli Qarai grudging you [their help]. So when there is panic, you see them observing you, their eyes rolling, like someone fainting at death. Then, when the panic is over, they scald you with [their] sharp tongues in their greed for riches. They never have had faith. So Allah has made their works fail, and that is easy for Allah. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Size karşı cimridirler (ikiyüzlüler)! Savaş - ölüm korkusu geldiğinde, üzerine ölüm korkusuyla baygınlık çökmüş kimse gibi, gözleri dönmüş bir halde sana baktıklarını görürsün. . . Korkuları geçtiğindeyse mal düşkünleri olarak sizi keskin dilleri ile incitirler. . . İşte bunlar iman etmemişlerdir! Bu yüzden de Allah onların yaptıklarını boşa çıkarmıştır. . . Bu, Allah için pek kolaydır. ### Ali Bulaç — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Türkçe Anlamı (Geldiklerinde de) Size karşı 'cimri ve bencildirler.' Şayet korku gelecek olsa, ölümden dolayı üstüne baygınlık çökmüş kimseler gibi gözleri dönerek sana bakmakta olduklarını görürsün. Korku gidince, hayra karşı oldukça düşkünlük göstererek sizi keskin dilleriyle (eleştirip inciterek) karşılarlar. İşte onlar iman etmemişlerdir; böylece Allah onların yaptıklarını boşa çıkarmıştır. Bu Allah'a göre pek kolaydır. ### Bayraktar Bayraklı — Yeni Bir Anlayışın Işığında Kur'an Meali Savaşa gelseler de sizin başarılı olmanızı istemezler. Hele korku gelip çattı mı, üzerine ölüm baygınlığı çökmüş gibi gözleri dönerek sana baktıklarını görürsün. Korku gidince, ganimete karşı aç gözlülüklerinden dolayı, size sivri dillerini uzatırlar. Onlar iman etmiş değillerdir, bundan dolayı Allah, onların yaptıklarını boşa çıkarmıştır. Bu, Allah için kolaydır. ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali (18-19) Şüphesiz Allah içinizden, savaştan alıkoyanları ve kardeşlerine, "Bize gelin" diyenleri biliyor. Size katkıda cimri davranarak savaşa pek az gelirler. Korku geldiğinde ise, üzerine ölüm baygınlığı çökmüş kimse gibi gözleri dönerek sana baktıklarını görürsün. Korku gidince de ganimete karşı aşırı düşkünlük göstererek sizi keskin dillerle incitirler. İşte onlar iman etmediler. Allah da onların amellerini boşa çıkardı. Bu, Allah'a kolaydır. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Size karşı kıskançlık ediyorlardı, derken o korku hali gelince gördün onları ki ölümden baygınlık sarmış kimse gibi gözleri dönerek sana bakıyorlardı, derken o korku gidince size keskin keskin diller sıyırdılar, hayra karşı kıskançlık ediyorlardı, işte bunlar iyman etmediler de Allah amellerini hiçe çıkardı, Allaha göre o ehemmiyyetsiz bulunuyor. ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Size karşı kıskançlık ediyorlardı. Derken o korku hali gelince, onları gördün, ölüm baygınlığı sarmış kimse gibi gözleri dönerek sana bakıyorlardı. O korku gidince size keskin keskin diller sıyırdılar; hayra karşı da kıskançlık ediyorlardı, işte bunlar iman etmediler de Allah amellerini hiçe çıkardı. Bu Allah'a göre önemsizdir. ### Gültekin Onan (Geldiklerinde de) Size karşı 'cimri ve bencildirler'. Şayet korku gelecek olsa, ölümden dolayı üstüne baygınlık çökmüş kimseler gibi, gözleri dönerek sana bakmakta olduklarını görürsün. Korku gidince, hayra karşı oldukça düşkünlük göstererek sizi keskin dilleriyle (eleştirip inciterek) karşılarlar. İşte onlar inanmamışlardır, böylece Tanrı onların yaptıklarını boşa çıkarmıştır. Bu Tanrı'ya göre pek kolaydır. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (Gelseler de) size karşı (yardımda) pek cimri adamlar olarak (gelirler). Hele kendilerine korku çatdı mı, onların ölümden üstüne baygınlık çökmüş kimseler gibi gözleri dönerek, sana bakdıklarını görürsün. O korku gidince ise hayra karşı pek düşkün adamlar tavriyle, sizi keskin dilleriyle incitirler. Onlar (hakıykatde) iman etmemişlerdir. Bundan dolayı Allah onların amellerini hiçe indirmişdir. Bu, Allaha göre kolaydır. ### İbni Kesir Size karşı cimridirler. Korku geldiği zaman, görürsün ki onlar üstüne ölüm baygınlığı çökmüş gibi gözleri dönerek sana bakarlar. Korku gidince de iyiliğinizi çekemeyerek, sivri dilleriyle sizi incitirler. İşte onlar, inanmamışlardır. Bunun için de Allah yaptıklarını boşa çıkarmıştır. Bu, Allah için pek kolaydır. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı ve (böyleleri) size yapılan yardımı kıskanırlar. Ama sonra bir tehlike ile karşılaşınca da, ölümün gölgesinde yaşayan biri gibi, (korkuyla) gözleri dönmüş bir şekilde, (ey peygamber, yardım dilemek için) sana baktıklarını görürsün: tehlike geçince de iyiliğinizi çekemeyip siz (müminleri) sivri dilleri ile incitirler! Bu (gibi) insanlar, iman etmiş değillerdir, bu yüzden Allah onların yaptıklarını boşa çıkarır, bu Allah için kolaydır. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Sizi kıskanırlar. Korkuya kapılınca, ölüm baygınlığı geçiren kimse gibi gözleri dönmüş olarak sana baktıklarını görürsün. Korku geçince keskin dillerini uzatıp sizi incitirler, İyiliğinizi çekemezler. Bunlar, iman etmemişlerdir. Allah da onların yaptıklarını boşa gidermiştir. Bu, Allah için çok kolaydır. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali (Geldikleri zaman da) Size karşı cimriler olarak (gelirler). Ama korkulu bir durum olunca onların, üstüne ölüm baygınlığı çökmüş insan gibi, gözleri dönerek sana baktıklarını görürsün. Korku gid(ip de sıra ganimetleri paylaşmağa gel)ince mala düşkünlük göstererek sizi sivri dillerle incitirler. Onlar, (içtenlikle) inanmamışlar, bu yüzden Allah onların işlerini boşa çıkarmıştır. Bu, Allah'a göre kolaydır. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Size karşı cimrilik/kıskançlık ederler. Korku geldiğinde onları sana bakar halde görürsün. Korku gittiğinde ise hayra karşı kıskançlık yüzünden sizi keskin dillerle yaralarlar. Ölümden üzerine baygınlık çökmüş biri gibidirler. Bunlar iman etmemişlerdir. Bu yüzden de Allah, amellerini boşa çıkarmıştır. Bunu yapmak Allah için çok kolaydır. ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an Size yönelik bir kıskançlık bu; öte yandan tehlikeyi hissettikleri zaman da sanki ölüm tarafından çepeçevre kuşatılmışlar gibi gözleri dönmüş bir halde sana (yalvarırcasına) baktıklarını görürsün; tehlike geçtiğinde ise, iyiliğe karşı kıskançlık edip sivri ve keskin bir dille size hücum ederler.
