Surah Al-Ahzab (The Clans) — سورة الأحزاب - **Verse:** 15 / 73 · **Juz:** 21 · **Mushaf page:** 418 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahzab/verse-15 ## Arabic وَلَقَدْ كَانُوا عَاهَدُوا اللّٰهَ مِنْ قَبْلُ لَا يُوَلُّونَ الْاَدْبَارَۜ وَكَانَ عَهْدُ اللّٰهِ مَسْؤُ۫لاً ## Transcription Walaqad kanoo AAahadoo Allahamin qablu la yuwalloona al-adbara wakanaAAahdu Allahi mas-oola ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Yet they had previously made a contract with Allah that they would never turn their backs. Contracts made with Allah will be asked about. ### Progressive Muslims And indeed they had pledged to God before this that they would not turn around and flee. Making a pledge to God brings great responsibility. ### Shabbir Ahmed Although before that they had pledged to Allah that they would not turn their backs (to Faith and against invasion). An oath to Allah must be answered for. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They had earlier covenanted with Allah that they would not turn their backs in flight. And a covenant made with Allah must needs be answered for.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, they had felt regret at the weakness they had shown on the occasion of the battle of Uhud and pledged to Allah that they would compensate for their error in any trial that they would confront in the future. But Allah cannot be deceived by empty words. He puts to one or the other test everyone who makes a pledge with Him so that his sincerity of intention or otherwise is found out. Therefore, just after two years of the battle of Uhud, He made them confront an even more serious danger and discovered how far they were sincere in their pledge. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Yet they had already given their solemn promise to Allah never to defect, desert or flee the enemy. They failed to realize that an engagement entered into with Allah is indeed an immense responsibility. ### Bijan Moeinian These are the same people who [after their disobedience in the battle of Uhud] pledged to God [that they would make up for their failure in the future trials. ] Making a pledge with God involves a great responsibility [God cannot be deceived by empty words and, just two years after the battle of Uhud, put them to this test.] ### Al-Hilali & Khan And indeed they had already made a covenant with Allâh not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allâh must be answered for. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And yet they had already covenanted with Allah not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allah must (surely) be answered for. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They had already pledged to Allah earlier never to turn their backs ˹in retreat˺.
