Surah Al-Ahqaf (The Dunes) — سورة الأحقاف - **Verse:** 29 / 35 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 505 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahqaf/verse-29 ## Arabic وَاِذْ صَرَفْنَٓا اِلَيْكَ نَفَراً مِنَ الْجِنِّ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْاٰنَۚ فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوهُ قَالُٓوا اَنْصِتُواۚ فَلَمَّا قُضِيَ وَلَّوْا اِلٰى قَوْمِهِمْ مُنْذِر۪ينَ ## Transcription Wa-ith sarafna ilaykanafaran mina aljinni yastamiAAoona alqur-ana falammahadaroohu qaloo ansitoo falammaqudiya wallaw ila qawmihim munthireen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley And We diverted a group of jinn towards you to listen to the Qur’an. When they were in earshot of it they said, ‘Be quiet and listen.’ When it was over they went back to their people, warning them. ### Progressive Muslims And We sent to you a small number of Jinn, in order to let them listen to the Quran. So when they arrived there, they said: "Pay attention." Then, when it was finished, they returned to their people, to warn them. ### Shabbir Ahmed (O Messenger) Behold, We turned toward you a company of the nomads so that they might listen to the Qur'an. And as soon as they were in its presence, they said, "Listen in silence!" And when it was over, they hurried to their people as Warners! When they got there, they said, "Listen." As soon as it was over, they rushed to their people, warning. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira And (remember), when We turned a company of jinns towards you to listen to the Qur'an, they arrived when it was being recited, and they said: "Keep silent. " When it was over they came back to their people, warning them: ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And [mention, O Muúammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen quietly." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners. ### Muhammad Asad AND LO! We caused a group of unseen beings to incline towards thee, [O Muhammad,] so that they might give ear to the Qur’an; and so, as soon as they became aware of it, they said [unto one another], "Listen in silence!" And when [the recitation] was ended, they returned to their people as warners. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And when We inclined toward thee (Muhammad) certain of the jinn, who wished to hear the Qur'an and, when they were in its presence, said: Give ear! and, when it was finished, turned back to their people, warning. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And call to mind when We sent to you a party of the jinn that they may listen to the Qur'an.[1] When they reached the place (where you were reciting the Qur'an), they said to one another: "Be silent (and listen)." And when the recitation ended, they went back to their people as warners. _Footnotes_ - [1] The traditions that have been related from Abdullah bin Masud, Zubair, Abdullah bin Abbas, Hasan Basri, Saeed bin Jubair, Zarr bin Hubaish, Mujahid, Ikrimah and others in connection with the commentary of this verse concur that this incident of the first visit of the jinns, which has been mentioned in this verse, had occurred in the valley of Nakhlah. And according to Ibn Ishaq, Abu Nuaim Isfahaini and Waqidi, this incident occurred during the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) return journey from Taif to Makkah. On the way, when he halted at Nakhlah, and was reciting the Quran in the Isha or the Fajr or the Tahajjud Prayer, a group of the jinns happened to pass by and stopped to listen to him. In this connection, all the traditions agree that on this occasion the jinns did not appear before the Prophet (peace be upon him), nor did he feel their presence, but Allah informed him afterwards by revelation that they had come and listened to the Quranic recitation. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab We resolved to direct some of the Jinn toward the place where you Muhammad were leading your followers in the act of worship, reciting the Quran. When they were within hearing; a command to be quiet was uttcred by some and they listened to the end of the recital. They hastened back to their people advising them to alter their course of actions when warned of its danger. ### Bijan Moeinian I (God) led a group of extra-terrestrials (Jinns) to one of your Qur’an recitation sessions. When they arrived, they listened carefully. Then they returned to their people as Warner. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And (remember) when We sent towards you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) a group (three to ten persons) of the jinn, (quietly) listening to the Qur’ân. When they stood in the presence thereof, they said: "Listen in silence!" And when it was finished, they returned to their people, as warners. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Behold, We turned towards thee a company of Jinns (quietly) listening to the Qur'an: when they stood in the presence thereof, they said, "Listen in silence!" İşte bunlar onun huzuuruna gelince (birbirine) "Susun (dinleyin)" demişler, (okunması) bitirilince de (kendilerini azab ile) korkutmıya me'mur olarak kavmlerine dönmüşlerdi. ### İbni Kesir Hani Kur'an dinlesinler diye sana cinlerden bir taife yöneltmiştik. Hazır olunca demişlerdi ki: Susun. Kur'an tamam olunca da her biri birer uyarıcı olarak kavimlerine dönmüşlerdi. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Hani (ey Muhammed!) Biz bir grup tanınmayan/bilinmeyen varlığı, Kuran'ı dinleyebilsinler diye sana doğru yöneltmiştik ve o(nun mesajları)nı fark eder etmez de (birbirlerine) "Sessizce dinleyin!" demişler ve (okuma) bittiğinde kendi toplumlarına uyarıcı olarak dönmüşlerdi. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Hani, cinlerden bir grubu Kur'an'ı dinlesinler diye sana yöneltmiştik. Onun yanına gelince "susun!" demişler. (Okuma) tamamlanınca kavimlerine uyarıcı olarak dönmüşler. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Bir zaman, cinlerden bir topluluğu Kur'an dinlemek üzere sana yöneltmiştik. Ona geldiklerinde (birbirlerine): "Susun, (dinleyin)" dediler. Fussilet 41:26'da belirtildiği üzere, Kur'an okunurken gürültü yapmak Mekke müşriklerinin vahyin sesini bastırmak amacıyla başvurdukları bir yöntemdi.
