Surah Al-Ahqaf (The Dunes) — سورة الأحقاف - **Verse:** 27 / 35 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 504 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahqaf/verse-27 ## Arabic وَلَقَدْ اَهْلَكْنَا مَا حَوْلَكُمْ مِنَ الْقُرٰى وَصَرَّفْنَا الْاٰيَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ## Transcription Walaqad ahlakna ma hawlakummina alqura wasarrafna al-ayatilaAAallahum yarjiAAoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We destroyed the cities round about you and have variegated the Signs so that hopefully they will turn back. ### Progressive Muslims And We have destroyed the towns around you, after We had explained the proofs, perhaps they would repent. ### Shabbir Ahmed Thus indeed have We annihilated many townships round about you, after We had explained Our Messages from different vantage points that they might return. (Townships and communities: Aad, Thamud, Sheba, Midyan, Sodom, Gomorrah, Ninevah, Tubba'). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And We have destroyed what surrounds you of cities; and We expounded the proofs, that they might return. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And We destroyed the towns around you and We had dispatched the signs, perhaps they would repent. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament We have annihilated many communities around you, after we had explained the proofs, that they might repent. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira We have destroyed habitations all around you, having explained Our signs in different ways to them that they may turn back. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief]. ### Muhammad Asad Thus have We destroyed many a [sinful] community living round about you; and yet, [before destroying them,] We had given many facets to [Our warning] messages, so that they might turn back [from their evil ways]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And verily We have destroyed townships round about you, and displayed (for them) Our revelation, that haply they might return. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Surely We destroyed many a town around you. We sent Our Messages to them repeatedly and in diverse forms that they may eschew (their evil ways) and return (to Allah). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And before them in time, did We do away with towns all around you people. We displayed to them many signs and revealed many revelations all demonstrating divine power and authority and indicating some coming event, so that they stand repentant in lowliest plight and return their thoughts to Allah, but they did not. ### Bijan Moeinian I have destroyed many nations around you [in Arabian Peninsula]. I sent my messages to them over and over again in various ways so that they might stop wrongdoings. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And indeed We have destroyed towns (populations) round about you, and We have (repeatedly) shown (them) the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in various ways that they might return (to the truth and believe in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali We destroyed aforetime populations round about you; and We have shown the Signs in various ways, that they may turn (to Us). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran We certainly destroyed the societies around you after having varied the signs so perhaps they would return ˹to the Right Path˺. ### Taqi Usmani And We have (also) destroyed (other) towns around you, while We had given to them a variety of signs, so that they might return (from disbelief). ### Abdul Haleem We have also destroyed other communities that once flourished around you- We had given them various signs so that they might return to the right way- ### Arthur John Arberry And We destroyed the cities about you, and We turned about the signs, that haply they would return. ### E.
