وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ ف۪يمَٓا اِنْ مَكَّنَّاكُمْ ف۪يهِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَمْعاً وَاَبْصَاراً وَاَفْـِٔدَةًۘ  فَمَٓا اَغْنٰى عَنْهُمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَلَٓا اَبْصَارُهُمْ وَلَٓا اَفْـِٔدَتُهُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ اِذْ  كَانُوا يَجْحَدُونَ بِاٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِه۪ يَسْتَهْزِؤُ۫نَ۟

## Transcription

Walaqad makkannahum feema inmakkannakum feehi wajaAAalna lahum samAAan waabsaranwaaf-idatan fama aghna AAanhum samAAuhum walaabsaruhum wala af-idatuhum min shay-in ith kanooyajhadoona bi-ayati Allahi wahaqabihim ma kanoo bihi yastahzi-oon

## Translations

### Aisha Bewley

We established them far more firmly than We have established you and gave them hearing, sight and hearts. But their hearing, sight and hearts were of no use to them at all when they renounced Allah’s Signs and what they mocked at engulfed them.

### Progressive Muslims

And We had established them in the same way as We established you, and provided them with the hearing, and the eyesight, and the heart. But their hearing, eyesight, and hearts did not help them at all. This is because they used to disregard God's revelations, and they were stricken by that which they used to mock!

And verily, We had established them in the land better than We ever established you, and We had given them keen faculties of hearing, sight and intellect. But of no avail to them were there hearing and sight and intellect when they went on knowingly rejecting Allah's Messages. And so, the very thing they used to mock at surrounded them. ('Fuad', plural 'Afidah', includes the faculties of intellect, reasoning, insight and feelings (45:23)).

We had established them firmly in a manner We have not established you.[1] We had given them ears and eyes and hearts. But nothing availed them — neither their ears, nor their eyes, nor their hearts, for they denied the Signs of Allah.[2] Then what they had mocked at encompassed them.

- [1] That is, you are no match for them as far as wealth, power, authority and other things are concerned: your sphere of authority is restricted to the bounds of the city of Makkah, but they had dominated a large part of the earth.
- [2] An important truth has been stated in this brief sentence. It is only the revelations of Allah which give the right knowledge and understanding of the truth and reality to man. If man has this understanding and knowledge he sees the right thing with his eyes, hears the right thing with his ears, thinks the right thing with his mind and intellect and takes the right decisions. But when he refuses to believe in the revelations of Allah, he fails to see the truth in spite of the eyes, becomes deaf to every word of admonition in spite of the ears, and misuses the blessings of the mind and intellect that God has granted him, and goes on drawing wrong conclusions one after the other, so much so that he starts using all his capabilities for his own destruction.

We had endowed them with power and ability, with diligence and capacities of action, with wealth and knowledge, with mental receiving Dower and talent, and with many qualities which total up to a much higher degree then those that are summed up in you' people. We conferred on them the power of hearing and seeing, faculties divine, and We conferred on them the seat of feeling, understanding and thought, and the seat of consciousness, intellect and volitions, but they' took a bad advantage of thesc divine qualities and misused them, Consequently neither their power of hearing nor that of seeing were of any advantage to them nor did they derive benefit of their intellect or of their volitions; They simply ignored Allah's revelations and signs, and by consequence they were beset on all sides by the same material and immaterial things they mocked at, owing to their inordinate self-esteem.

Onların Allah'tan alabileceği tek yardım, yaptığının iyi veya kötü olmasının gönüllerine ilham edilmesi (Bkz:Şems 91/8) ve fıtratlarındaki bilgidir.  Bu gerçekleri (ayetleri) görmezlikten gelenler (kafirler) ise dünyada ve ahirette dışlandıklarından (lanetlendiklerinden) artık mücadelelerinde yapayalnızdırlar.
