Surah Al-Ahqaf (The Dunes) — سورة الأحقاف - **Verse:** 18 / 35 · **Juz:** 26 · **Mushaf page:** 503 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-ahqaf/verse-18 ## Arabic اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ الَّذ۪ينَ حَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ ف۪ٓي اُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِۜ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا خَاسِر۪ينَ ## Transcription Ola-ika allatheena haqqaAAalayhimu alqawlu fee umamin qad khalat min qablihim minaaljinni wal-insi innahum kanoo khasireen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those are people of whom the statement about the nations, both of jinn and men, who passed away before them, has also proved true; truly they were the lost. ### Progressive Muslims These are the ones against whom the retribution has been deserved in nations who had come before them of humans and Jinn; they are the losers. ### Shabbir Ahmed Such are the ones against whom the Word came to pass among the previous generations of the rural and the urban. Verily, they will be lost! ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Those are they upon whom the word concerning the communities of the domini and the servi which passed away before them became binding; they were losers. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation These are the ones against whom the retribution has been deserved in nations who had come before them of mankind and Jinn; they are the losers. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Such are the ones stamped as disbelievers among every generation of jinns and humans; they are losers. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They are those on whom the sentence of God would be justified as on communities of jinns and men before them. They will surely perish. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Those are the ones upon whom the word has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers. ### Muhammad Asad It is [such as] these upon whom the sentence [of doom] will fall due, together with the [other sinful] communities of invisible beings and humans that have passed away before their time. Verily, they will be lost: ### Marmaduke Pickthall Such are those on whom the Word concerning nations of the jinn and mankind which have passed away before them hath effect. Lo! they are the losers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary It is against such that Allah's sentence (of punishment) has become due. They will join the communities of humans and jinn that have preceded them. Verily all of them will court utter loss.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Here, two types of the character have been placed side by side and the listeners are asked the silent question as to which of them is better. At that time both these types of character practically existed in the society, and it was not at all difficult for the people to know where they could find the first type of the character and where the second. This is the answer to this saying of the chiefs of the Quraish: If it had been any good to believe in this Book, these few youngsters and slaves would not have believed in it before they did. In the light of this answer everyone could see for himself as to what was the character of the believers and what of the unbelievers. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Such persons among preceding generations of the Jinn and mankind were born to it; it was their destiny to suffer loss and such destiny has been fulfilled ### Bijan Moeinian Disbelieving men and extra-terrestrials (Jinns) with such an attitude are already sentenced to punishment. Indeed they are the losers. ### Al-Hilali & Khan They are those against whom the Word (of torment) is justified among the previous generations of jinn and mankind that have passed away. Verily, they are ever the losers. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Such are they against whom is proved the sentence among the previous generations of Jinns and men, that have passed away; for they will be (utterly) lost. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran These are the ones against whom the fate of earlier communities of jinn and humans has been justified, ˹for˺ they were truly losers. ### Taqi Usmani Such are the people on whom the word (of punishment) has come true along with the communities of the Jinn and the humans that have passed before them.
