- **Meaning:** To sink or go away into the ground or earth (place or person), become depressed (such as the eye becoming depressed in the head), to lose sight/become blind, to lose light (like the sun or moon during an eclipse), become defective or deficient, become lean or emaciated, to recover (such as from disease or illness), to put out one's eye, make a hole in a thing, to abase or humble or make lowly, to disgrace, to be vile.

Do you feel secure that He will not cause a portion of the land to swallow you, or send against you a storm of stones? Then would you not find for you a guardian.

### 28. Surah Al-Qasas, Verse 81

(Then We caused the earth to swallow him and his abode. And there was for him no band to help him besides God; and he was not of those who help themselves.

Waasbaha allatheenatamannaw makanahu bil-amsi yaqooloona waykaannaAllaha yabsutu arrizqa liman yashaomin AAibadihi wayaqdiru lawla an manna AllahuAAalayna lakhasafa bina waykaannahu la yuflihualkafiroon

And morning found those who had desired his place the day before, saying: “Oh, how God expands and straitens the provision for whom He wills of His servants! Had God not been gracious to us, He would have caused it to swallow us. And oh, how the false claimers of guidance do not succeed!”)

### 29. Surah Al-'Ankabut, Verse 40

Fakullan akhathna bithanbihifaminhum man arsalna AAalayhi hasiban waminhum manakhathat-hu assayhatu waminhum mankhasafna bihi al-arda waminhum man aghraqnawama kana Allahu liyathlimahumwalakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoon

And each We took for his transgression; and among them was he upon whom We sent a storm of stones; and among them was he whom the Blast seized; and among them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow; and among them was he whom We drowned. And God wronged them not, but they wronged their souls.

### 34. Surah Saba, Verse 9

اَفَلَمْ يَرَوْا اِلٰى مَا بَيْنَ اَيْد۪يهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ وَالْاَرْضِۜ اِنْ نَشَأْ نَخْسِفْ بِهِمُ الْاَرْضَ اَوْ نُسْقِطْ عَلَيْهِمْ كِسَفاً مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَةً لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُن۪يبٍ۟

Afalam yaraw ila ma baynaaydeehim wama khalfahum mina assama-i wal-ardiin nasha/ nakhsif bihimu al-arda aw nusqitAAalayhim kisafan mina assama-i inna fee thalikalaayatan likulli AAabdin muneeb

Do they then not see what is before them, and what following them of the heaven and the earth? If We will, We can make the earth swallow them, or cause to fall upon them pieces of the sky. In that is a proof for every repentant servant.

### 67. Surah Al-Mulk, Verse 16

Do you feel secure that He who is in the heaven will not make the earth swallow you, the while it shakes?

### 75. Surah Al-Qiyamah, Verse 8
