Wa-itha laqoo allatheena amanooqaloo amanna wa-itha khalabaAAduhum ila baAAdin qaloo atuhaddithoonahumbima fataha Allahu AAalaykum liyuhajjookumbihi AAinda rabbikum afala taAAqiloon

And when they meet those who heed warning, they say: “We believe.” But when they are alone with one another, they say: “Do you recount to them what God has revealed to you, that they might argue against you before your Lord?” Will you then not use reason!

Am hasibtum an tadkhuloo aljannatawalamma ya/tikum mathalu allatheena khalaw minqablikum massat-humu alba/sao waddarraowazulziloo hatta yaqoola arrasoolu wallatheenaamanoo maAAahu mata nasru Allahi alainna nasra Allahi qareeb

If you think that you will enter the Garden when there has not come to you the like of those who passed away before you: affliction and adversity touched them, and they were shaken until the Messenger and those who heeded warning with him said: “When is the help of God?” In truth, the help of God is near.

Ha antum ola-i tuhibboonahumwala yuhibboonakum watu/minoona bilkitabikullihi wa-itha laqookum qaloo amannawa-itha khalaw AAaddoo AAalaykumu al-anamilamina alghaythi qul mootoo bighaythikuminna Allaha AAaleemun bithati assudoor

Here you are, those who love them; and they love you not, when you believe in the Writ — all of it. And when they meet you, they say: “We believe,” but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you from rage. Say thou: “Die in your rage, God knows what is in the breasts.”

Wama muhammadun illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi arrusulu afa-in mataaw qutila inqalabtum AAala aAAqabikum wamanyanqalib AAala AAaqibayhi falan yadurra Allahashay-an wasayajzee Allahu ashshakireen

And Muḥammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If then he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels does no harm to God at all; and God will reward the grateful.

Ma almaseehu ibnu maryama illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi arrusulu waommuhu siddeeqatunkana ya/kulani attaAAamaonthur kayfa nubayyinu lahumu al-ayatithumma onthur anna yu/fakoon

The Messiah, son of Mary, was but a messenger; messengers had passed away before him; and his mother was a woman of truth; they both ate food. See thou how We make plain the proofs to them; then see thou how they are deluded.

Qala odkhuloo fee omamin qad khalatmin qablikum mina aljinni wal-insi fee annarikullama dakhalat ommatun laAAanat okhtaha hattaitha iddarakoo feeha jameeAAan qalatokhrahum li-oolahum rabbana haola-iadalloona faatihim AAathaban diAAfanmina annari qala likullin diAAfunwalakin la taAAlamoon

He will say: “Enter among the communities that have passed away before you of domini and servi into the Fire!” Whenever a community enters, it curses its sister; when they have followed one another therein all together, the last of them will say to the first of them: “Our Lord: these led us astray; so give Thou them double punishment of the Fire!” He will say: “For each is double, but you know not.”

Fa-itha insalakha al-ashhuru alhurumufaqtuloo almushrikeena haythu wajadtumoohum wakhuthoohumwahsuroohum waqAAudoo lahum kulla marsadinfa-in taboo waaqamoo assalatawaatawoo azzakata fakhalloo sabeelahum innaAllaha ghafoorun raheem

And when the inviolable months have passed, then kill the idolaters wheresoever you find them, and seize them, and restrain them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, and uphold the duty, and render the purity, then let them go their way; God is forgiving and merciful.

Do they await save the like of the days of those who passed away before them? Say thou: “Then wait — I am with you waiting.”

WayastaAAjiloonaka bissayyi-atiqabla alhasanati waqad khalat min qablihimu almathulatuwa-inna rabbaka lathoo maghfiratin linnasiAAala thulmihim wa-inna rabbaka lashadeedualAAiqab

And they ask thee to hasten the evil before the good when there have passed away before them exemplary punishments. And thy Lord is full of forgiveness towards men despite their injustice; but thy Lord is severe in retribution.

Kathalika arsalnaka feeommatin qad khalat min qabliha omamun litatluwa AAalayhimuallathee awhayna ilayka wahum yakfuroona birrahmaniqul huwa rabbee la ilaha illa huwa AAalayhitawakkaltu wa-ilayhi matab

Thus have We sent thee among a community — communities have passed away before it — that thou recite to them what We have revealed to thee; but they deny the Almighty. Say thou: “He is my Lord: — there is no god save He — in Him have I placed my trust, and to Him is my return.”

### 33. Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 38

There is no blame upon the Prophet concerning what God ordained for him. The practice of God among those who passed away before — and the command of God is a destiny decreed —

### 40. Surah Ghafir, Verse 85

But their faith did not benefit them when they saw Our might — the practice of God which has passed among His servants[...] — and thereupon the false claimers of guidance were lost.

Waqayyadna lahum quranaafazayyanoo lahum ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahumwahaqqa AAalayhimu alqawlu fee omamin qad khalat minqablihim mina aljinni wal-insi innahum kanoo khasireen

And We assigned to them companions, and they made fair to them what was before them, and what following them; and upon them the word concerning the communities of domini and servi which had passed away before them became binding: — they were losers.

Wallathee qala liwalidayhioffin lakuma ataAAidaninee an okhraja waqad khalatialquroonu min qablee wahuma yastagheethani Allahawaylaka amin inna waAAda Allahi haqqunfayaqoolu ma hatha illa asateerual-awwaleen

And he who says to his parents: “Fie upon you! Do you promise me that I will be brought forth, when generations have already passed away before me?” while they seek aid of God: — “Woe to thee! Believe thou; the promise of God is true,” but he says: “This is only legends of the former peoples,” —

### 46. Surah Al-Ahqaf, Verse 18

Ola-ika allatheena haqqaAAalayhimu alqawlu fee umamin qad khalat min qablihim minaaljinni wal-insi innahum kanoo khasireen

Those are they upon whom the word concerning the communities of the domini and the servi which passed away before them became binding; they were losers.

Wathkur akha AAadinith anthara qawmahu bil-ahqafiwaqad khalati annuthuru min bayni yadayhi waminkhalfihi alla taAAbudoo illa Allaha inneeakhafu AAalaykum AAathaba yawmin AAatheem

And remember thou the brother of ʿĀd, when he warned his people of the wind-curved sandhills: — and warners have passed away before him and after him — “Serve not save God; I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day,”

### 48. Surah Al-Fath, Verse 23
