- **Meaning:** To become lean, to diminish/decrease/waste away, to be poor, be of want or need, to perforate/pierce/skewer a thing, to remove/transfer/shift, to pick or extract the remains of, put into the interstices of a thing, to spoil or become sour, make wine into vinegar, act as a true and sincere friend, fall short of accomplishing a task, to neglect/omit or leave undone, to absent one's self, produce bad fruit, enter/penetrate or pass through, interrupt or intervene, to be shaky/loose/faulty/defective, to be uncompact/disordered/unsound, to be corrupt or disordered in temperament, to attire with an anklet or pair of anklets, to be old and worn out, to die and leave a gap/vacancy, to be of habit/custom, show true and sincere affection/friendship/love, to be flawed/imperfect/deficient, to leave one thing for another.

O you who heed warning: spend of what We have provided you before there comes a day wherein is neither commerce, nor friendship, nor intercession; and the false claimers of guidance: they are the wrongdoers.

Waman ahsanu deenan mimman aslamawajhahu lillahi wahuwa muhsinun wattabaAAamillata ibraheema haneefan wattakhathaAllahu ibraheema khaleela

And who is better in doctrine than he who submits his face to God, and is a doer of good, and follows the creed of Abraham, inclining to truth? And God took Abraham as a friend.

### 9. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 47

Law kharajoo feekum ma zadookumilla khabalan walaawdaAAoo khilalakumyabghoonakumu alfitnata wafeekum sammaAAoona lahum wallahuAAaleemun biththalimeen

Had they gone forth with you, they would have increased you only in ruin, and been active in your midst seeking means of denial for you; and among you are eager listeners to them; and God knows the wrongdoers.

### 14. Surah Ibrahim, Verse 31

Qul liAAibadiya allatheena amanooyuqeemoo assalata wayunfiqoo mimmarazaqnahum sirran waAAalaniyatan min qabli anya/tiya yawmun la bayAAun feehi wala khilal

Say thou to My servants who heed warning, that they uphold the duty, and spend of what We have provided them, secretly and openly, before there comes a day wherein there is neither bargaining nor friendship.

### 17. Surah Al-Isra, Verse 5

Fa-itha jaa waAAdu oolahumabaAAathna AAalaykum AAibadan lana oleeba/sin shadeedin fajasoo khilala addiyariwakana waAAdan mafAAoola

Then when the promise came of the first of the two, We raised up against you servants of Ours of severe might who conducted a search within the homes; and it was a promise fulfilled.

### 17. Surah Al-Isra, Verse 73

Wa-in kadoo layaftinoonaka AAani allatheeawhayna ilayka litaftariya AAalayna ghayrahuwa-ithan lattakhathooka khaleela

And they had almost seduced thee away from that We revealed to thee, that thou invent about Us other than it — and then would they have taken thee as a friend.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 33

Kilta aljannatayni atat okulahawalam tathlim minhu shay-an wafajjarna khilalahumanahara

Each of the two gardens produced its fruit and were wronged nothing thereof. And We caused to flow in the midst of them a river.

### 24. Surah An-Nur, Verse 43

اَلَمْ تَرَ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ يُزْج۪ي سَحَاباً ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ رُكَاماً فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِه۪ۚ وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مِنْ جِبَالٍ ف۪يهَا مِنْ بَرَدٍ فَيُص۪يبُ بِه۪ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُ عَنْ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُۜ  يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرْقِه۪ يَذْهَبُ بِالْاَبْصَارِۜ

Alam tara anna Allaha yuzjee sahabanthumma yu-allifu baynahu thumma yajAAaluhu rukaman fataraalwadqa yakhruju min khilalihi wayunazzilu mina assama-imin jibalin feeha min baradin fayuseebu bihiman yashao wayasrifuhu AAan man yashao yakadusana barqihi yathhabu bil-absar

Dost thou not see that God drives the clouds? Then He brings them together; then He makes them a mass, and thou seest the rain come forth from the midst of it. And He sends down from the sky, from mountains therein of hail, and He strikes therewith whom He wills, and turns away therefrom whom He wills. The brilliance of His lightning almost takes away the sight.

### 27. Surah An-Naml, Verse 61

Amman jaAAala al-arda qararanwajaAAala khilalaha anharan wajaAAala laharawasiya wajaAAala bayna albahrayni hajizana-ilahun maAAa Allahi bal aktharuhum layaAAlamoon

If: He who made the earth a fixed lodging, and made rivers in its midst, and made firm mountains therein, and made a barrier between the two seas: is there any god with God? The truth is, most of them know not.

### 30. Surah Ar-Rum, Verse 48

اَللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ي يُرْسِلُ الرِّيَاحَ فَتُث۪يرُ سَحَاباً فَيَبْسُطُهُ فِي السَّمَٓاءِ كَيْفَ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَجْعَلُهُ  كِسَفاً فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِه۪ۚ فَاِذَٓا اَصَابَ بِه۪ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِه۪ٓ اِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

Allahu allathee yursilu arriyahafatutheeru sahaban fayabsutuhu fee assama-ikayfa yashao wayajAAaluhu kisafan fatara alwadqayakhruju min khilalihi fa-itha asaba bihiman yashao min AAibadihi itha humyastabshiroon

God is He who sends the winds, that they stir up a cloud, and He spreads it in the sky as He wills; and He makes it pieces and thou seest the rain come forth from the midst of it; then when He makes it fall on whom He wills of His servants they rejoice

### 43. Surah Az-Zukhruf, Verse 67

Al-akhillao yawma-ithin baAAduhumlibaAAdin AAaduwwun illa almuttaqeen

Friends, that day, will be enemies to one another save those of prudent fear.
