- **Meaning:** To be light of weight (in body or material substance), light in estimation or of little account, to be lively/active/agile/prompt and quick, obedient and submissive in work/servitude, to hasten, depart or journey quickly, to be light in conduct or behaviour, acute/sharp/clever/ingenious in hearing and understanding, to be agitated or excited by reason of fear and anger, acceptable in company or conversation, light-hearted/cheerful, to be few in number, to be deficient/slight/inconsiderable.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanookutiba AAalaykumu alqisasu fee alqatla alhurrubilhurri walAAabdu bilAAabdi walonthabilontha faman AAufiya lahu min akheehi shay-on fattibaAAunbilmaAAroofi waadaon ilayhi bi-ihsaninthalika takhfeefun min rabbikum warahmatun famaniiAAtada baAAda thalika falahu AAathabunaleem

O you who heed warning: just requital is ordained for you concerning those killed: the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But whoso is pardoned anything by his brother, let the pursuance be according to what is fitting and the payment to him with good conduct; that is an alleviation and mercy from your Lord. And whoso transgresses after that, he has a painful punishment.

Huwa allathee khalaqakum min nafsinwahidatin wajaAAala minha zawjaha liyaskunailayha falamma taghashshaha hamalathamlan khafeefan famarrat bihi falamma athqalatdaAAawa Allaha rabbahuma la-in ataytanasalihan lanakoonanna mina ashshakireen

He it is that created you from a single soul; and He created therefrom its mate, that he might be reassured thereby. Then when he covers her, she bears a light load, and she passes by with it. And when it becomes heavy they call to God, their Lord: “If Thou givest us a sound one, we will be among the grateful.”

Al-ana khaffafa Allahu AAankumwaAAalima anna feekum daAAfan fa-in yakun minkum mi-atun sabiratunyaghliboo mi-atayni wa-in yakun minkum alfun yaghliboo alfaynibi-ithni Allahi wallahu maAAa assabireen

Now has God lightened for you — and He knows there is weakness in you — so if there be of you a hundred patient, they will defeat two hundred; and if there be of you a thousand, they will defeat two thousand, by the leave of God; and God is with the patient.

Go forth, light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of God; that is best for you, if you would know.

Wallahu jaAAala lakum minbuyootikum sakanan wajaAAala lakum min juloodi al-anAAamibuyootan tastakhiffoonaha yawma thaAAnikumwayawma iqamatikum wamin aswafihawaawbariha waashAAariha athathanwamataAAan ila heen

And God made for you from your houses a place of rest; and He made for you from the hides of cattle houses which you find light on the day of your journey and on the day of your sojourn; and of their wool and their fur and their hair furnishing and enjoyment for a time.

Wallatheena kafaroo lahum narujahannama la yuqda AAalayhim fayamootoo walayukhaffafu AAanhum min AAathabiha kathalikanajzee kulla kafoor

And those who ignore warning, they have the fire of Gehenna. Not decreed is it for them that they might die, and nor will its punishment be lightened for them. Thus reward We every ingrate.
