- **Meaning:** To be heavy/weighty, slow/dull/sluggish, difficult/hard/grievous. Thaqalaan (dual of thaqalan) - two big and weighty things, two armies. Athqaal (pl. of thiql) - burden. Thaqiil (pl. thiqaal) - heavy. Mithqaal - weight, weight of a balance. Tathaaqal - to be dull/sluggish. Thaqala - to grow heavy, oppress, weigh down. Mathqalatun - burdened, heavily laden, any cause of depriving a mother of her child. Iththaqala (for tathaaqala) - to be born down heavily, incline heavily downwards.

Wahuwa allathee yursilu arriyahabushran bayna yaday rahmatihi hatta ithaaqallat sahaban thiqalan suqnahu libaladinmayyitin faanzalna bihi almaa faakhrajnabihi min kulli aththamarati kathalikanukhriju almawta laAAallakum tathakkaroon

And He it is that sends the winds as glad tidings before His mercy. When they have gathered up heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land and send down the water therein, and bring forth therewith every fruit, — thus will We bring forth the dead — that you might take heed.

Yas-aloonaka AAani assaAAatiayyana mursaha qul innama AAilmuhaAAinda rabbee la yujalleeha liwaqtiha illahuwa thaqulat fee assamawati wal-ardila ta/teekum illa baghtatan yas-aloonaka kaannaka hafiyyunAAanha qul innama AAilmuha AAinda Allahiwalakinna akthara annasi layaAAlamoon

They ask thee concerning the Hour: “When is its arrival?” Say thou: “Knowledge thereof is but with my Lord; none reveals its time save He. It weighs heavily in the heavens and the earth; it comes not upon you save unexpectedly.” They ask thee as though thou wert privy thereto; say thou: “Knowledge thereof is but with God”; but most men know not.

Huwa allathee khalaqakum min nafsinwahidatin wajaAAala minha zawjaha liyaskunailayha falamma taghashshaha hamalathamlan khafeefan famarrat bihi falamma athqalatdaAAawa Allaha rabbahuma la-in ataytanasalihan lanakoonanna mina ashshakireen

He it is that created you from a single soul; and He created therefrom its mate, that he might be reassured thereby. Then when he covers her, she bears a light load, and she passes by with it. And when it becomes heavy they call to God, their Lord: “If Thou givest us a sound one, we will be among the grateful.”

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooma lakum itha qeela lakumu infiroo fee sabeeli Allahiiththaqaltum ila al-ardi aradeetum bilhayatiaddunya mina al-akhirati fama mataAAualhayati addunya fee al-akhiratiilla qaleel

O you who heed warning: what ails you that when it is said to you: “Go forth in the cause of God,” you cling to the earth? Are you content with the life of this world over the Hereafter? But the enjoyment of the life of this world in the Hereafter is only small.

Wama takoonu fee sha/nin wamatatloo minhu min qur-anin wala taAAmaloona minAAamalin illa kunna AAalaykum shuhoodan ithtufeedoona feehi wama yaAAzubu AAan rabbika minmithqali tharratin fee al-ardi walafee assama-i wala asghara min thalikawala akbara illa fee kitabin mubeen

And thou art not in any matter, and thou recitest not from it any recital, and you do no deed save that We are over you witnesses when you are engaged therein; and there does not escape thy Lord the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven. Whether less than that, or greater, it is in a clear writ.

And We will set up the balances of equity for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be wronged in anything; and though it be the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it. And sufficient are We as account-takers.

“O my son: though it be the weight of a grain of mustard seed, and it be in a rock, or in the heavens, or in the earth, God will bring it forth; God is subtle and aware.”

And those who ignore warning say: “The Hour will not come to us.” Say thou: “Verily, by my Lord — it will come to you — the Knower of the Unseen!” Not absent from Him is the weight of an atom in the heavens or in the earth, or what is smaller than that or greater, save is in a clear writ,

Say thou: “Call to those whom you claim besides God.” They possess not the weight of an atom in the heavens or in the earth, and they have not in them any partnership, nor has He among them any helper.

Wala taziru waziratun wizraokhra wa-in tadAAu muthqalatun ila himlihala yuhmal minhu shay-on walaw kana thaqurba innama tunthiru allatheenayakhshawna rabbahum bilghaybi waaqamoo assalatawaman tazakka fa-innama yatazakka linafsihiwa-ila Allahi almaseer

And no bearer bears the burden of another. And if one heavy-laden should call to his burden, nothing of it will be carried, though he be a relative. Thou but warnest those who fear their Lord unseen and uphold the duty. And he who purifies himself: he but purifies himself for his soul. And to God is the journey’s end.
