And We made not the course which thou wast on save that We might know him who follows the Messenger from him who turns on his heels. And it is hard save for those whom God has guided. Surah Al-Hadid, Verse 27 - **Form in this verse:** رَأْفَةًۭ — rafatan · "compassion" - **Grammar:** noun · feminine · accusative case · indefinite ثُمَّ قَفَّيْنَا عَلٰٓى اٰثَارِهِمْ بِرُسُلِنَا وَقَفَّيْنَا بِع۪يسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَاٰتَيْنَاهُ الْاِنْج۪يلَ وَجَعَلْنَا ف۪ي قُلُوبِ الَّذ۪ينَ اتَّبَعُوهُ رَأْفَةً وَرَحْمَةًۜ وَرَهْبَانِيَّةًۨ ابْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ اِلَّا ابْتِغَٓاءَ رِضْوَانِ اللّٰهِ فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَـتِهَاۚ فَاٰتَيْنَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مِنْهُمْ اَجْرَهُمْۚ وَكَث۪يرٌ مِنْهُمْ فَاسِقُونَ Thumma qaffayna AAala atharihimbirusulina waqaffayna biAAeesa ibni maryamawaataynahu al-injeela wajaAAalna fee quloobiallatheena ittabaAAoohu ra/fatan warahmatan warahbaniyyatanibtadaAAooha ma katabnaha AAalayhimilla ibtighaa ridwani Allahifama raAAawha haqqa riAAayatihafaatayna allatheena amanoo minhumajrahum wakatheerun minhum fasiqoon Then We sent, following in their footsteps, Our messengers; and We sent, following, Jesus, son of Mary. And We gave him the Gospel, and We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy. But monasticism, they invented it; We did not prescribe it for them — only the seeking of the approval of God; but they did not observe it with the observance due it.
