God has sealed their hearts, and over their hearing and over their sight is a covering; and they have a great punishment.

In their hearts is disease, so God has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they have lied.

ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذٰلِكَ فَهِيَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ اَوْ اَشَدُّ قَسْوَةًۜ وَاِنَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ لَمَا يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ الْاَنْهَارُۜ وَاِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ الْمَٓاءُۜ وَاِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللّٰهِۜ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ

Thumma qasat quloobukum min baAAdi thalikafahiya kalhijarati aw ashaddu qaswatanwa-inna mina alhijarati lama yatafajjaruminhu al-anharu wa-inna minha lamayashshaqqaqu fayakhruju minhu almao wa-inna minhalama yahbitu min khashyati Allahi wamaAllahu bighafilin AAamma taAAmaloon

Then your hearts became hardened after that; and they are like stones or harder. And among stones is that from which gush forth rivers, and among them are those that split and water issues forth, and among them are those that fall down from fear of God; and God is not unmindful of what you do.

Wa-ith akhathna meethaqakumwarafaAAna fawqakumu attoora khuthooma ataynakum biquwwatin wasmaAAoo qaloosamiAAna waAAasayna waoshriboo feequloobihimu alAAijla bikufrihim qul bi/sama ya/murukumbihi eemanukum in kuntum mu/mineen

And when We took your agreement and raised the mount above you: “Hold fast what We give you, and listen,” they said: “We hear and we oppose”; and they were filled with drinking the calf in their hearts for their denial. Say thou: “Evil is what your faith enjoins upon you, if you be believers.”

(Say thou: “Whoso is an enemy to Gabriel:” — and he it is that brought it down upon thy heart, by the leave of God, confirming what was before it, and as guidance and glad tidings for the believers —

Waqala allatheena layaAAlamoona lawla yukallimuna Allahu awta/teena ayatun kathalika qala allatheenamin qablihim mithla qawlihim tashabahat quloobuhum qadbayyanna al-ayati liqawmin yooqinoon

And those who know not say: “Oh, that God would but speak to us, or a proof but come to us!” Thus said those before them likewise; their hearts are similar. We have made plain the proofs for people who are certain.

وَكَذٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ اُمَّةً وَسَطاً لِتَكُونُوا شُهَدَٓاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَه۪يداًۜ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا الْقِبْلَةَ الَّت۪ي كُنْتَ عَلَيْهَٓا اِلَّا لِنَعْلَمَ مَنْ يَتَّبِـعُ الرَّسُولَ مِمَّنْ يَنْقَلِبُ عَلٰى عَقِبَيْهِۜ  وَاِنْ كَانَتْ لَكَب۪يرَةً اِلَّا عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ هَدَى اللّٰهُۜ وَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيُض۪يعَ ا۪يمَانَكُمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَؤُ۫فٌ رَح۪يمٌ

Wakathalika jaAAalnakumommatan wasatan litakoonoo shuhadaa AAala annasiwayakoona arrasoolu AAalaykum shaheedan wamajaAAalna alqiblata allatee kunta AAalayha illalinaAAlama man yattabiAAu arrasoola mimman yanqalibu AAalaAAaqibayhi wa-in kanat lakabeeratan illa AAalaallatheena hada Allahu wama kanaAllahu liyudeeAAa eemanakum inna Allahabinnasi laraoofun raheem

And thus We made you an intermediary community that you might be witnesses to mankind, and that the Messenger might be a witness to you. And We made not the course which thou wast on save that We might know him who follows the Messenger from him who turns on his heels. And it is hard save for those whom God has guided. And God would not cause your faith to be lost; God is towards men kind and merciful.

قَدْ نَرٰى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَٓاءِۚ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْضٰيهَاۖ فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِۜ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُۜ وَاِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫تُوا الْكِتَابَ لَيَعْلَمُونَ اَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْۜ وَمَا اللّٰهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ

Qad nara taqalluba wajhika fee assama-ifalanuwalliyannaka qiblatan tardaha fawalli wajhakashatra almasjidi alharami wahaythu makuntum fawalloo wujoohakum shatrahu wa-inna allatheenaootoo alkitaba layaAAlamoona annahu alhaqqu minrabbihim wama Allahu bighafilin AAammayaAAmaloon

We have seen the turning of thy face towards the sky, and We will turn thee towards a course that will satisfy thee. So direct thou thy face towards the inviolable place of worship. And wheresoever you be, direct your faces towards it; and those given the Writ know that it is the truth from their Lord, and God is not unmindful of what they do.

And among men is he whose speech concerning the life of this world impresses thee, and he calls God as witness to what is in his heart; and he is the most contentious of debaters.

La yu-akhithukumu Allahubillaghwi fee aymanikum walakin yu-akhithukumbima kasabat quloobukum wallahu ghafoorun haleem

God will not take you to task for the vain speech in your oaths, but He will take you to task for what your hearts earned. And God is forgiving and clement.

وَاِذْ قَالَ اِبْرٰه۪يمُ رَبِّ اَرِن۪ي كَيْفَ تُحْـيِ الْمَوْتٰىۜ قَالَ اَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِنْۜ قَالَ بَلٰى وَلٰكِنْ لِيَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْب۪يۜ قَالَ فَخُذْ اَرْبَعَةً مِنَ الطَّيْرِ فَصُرْهُنَّ اِلَيْكَ ثُمَّ اجْعَلْ عَلٰى كُلِّ جَبَلٍ مِنْهُنَّ جُزْءاً ثُمَّ ادْعُهُنَّ يَأْت۪ينَكَ سَعْياًۜ وَاعْلَمْ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ عَز۪يزٌ حَك۪يمٌ۟

Wa-ith qala ibraheemurabbi arinee kayfa tuhyee almawta qala awalam tu/min qala bala walakin liyatma-innaqalbee qala fakhuth arbaAAatan mina attayrifasurhunna ilayka thumma ijAAal AAala kulli jabalinminhunna juz-an thumma odAAuhunna ya/teenaka saAAyan waAAlamanna Allaha AAazeezun hakeem

And when Abraham said: “My Lord, show Thou me how Thou wilt give life to the dead,” He said: “Dost thou not believe?” Said he: “Verily, but that my heart should be at rest.” He said: “Take thou four birds, and cause thou them to incline to thee; then place thou a part of them upon each hill; then call thou to them — they will come to thee in haste. And know thou that God is exalted in might and wise.”

Wa-in kuntum AAala safarin walamtajidoo katiban farihanun maqboodatun fa-inamina baAAdukum baAAdan falyu-addiallatheei/tumina amanatahu walyattaqi Allaha rabbahuwala taktumoo ashshahadata waman yaktumhafa-innahu athimun qalbuhu wallahu bimataAAmaloona AAaleem

And if you are on a journey, and find not a writer, then: a pledge in hand. But if one of you trusts another, then let him who is trusted discharge his trust, and let him be in prudent fear of God, his Lord. And conceal not the witness; and he who conceals it, his heart is sinful; and God knows what you do.

هُوَ الَّـذ۪ٓي اَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ اٰيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ اُمُّ الْكِتَابِ وَاُخَرُ مُتَشَابِهَاتٌۜ فَاَمَّا الَّذ۪ينَ ف۪ي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ ابْتِغَٓاءَ الْفِتْنَةِ وَابْتِغَٓاءَ تَأْو۪يلِه۪ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ تَأْو۪يلَهُٓ اِلَّا اللّٰهُۢ وَالرَّاسِخُونَ فِي الْعِلْمِ يَقُولُونَ اٰمَنَّا بِه۪ۙ   كُلٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّنَاۚ وَمَا يَذَّكَّرُ اِلَّٓا اُو۬لُوا الْاَلْبَابِ

Huwa allathee anzala AAalayka alkitabaminhu ayatun muhkamatun hunna ommualkitabi waokharu mutashabihatun faammaallatheena fee quloobihim zayghun fayattabiAAoona matashabaha minhu ibtighaa alfitnati wabtighaata/weelihi wama yaAAlamu ta/weelahu illa Allahuwarrasikhoona fee alAAilmi yaqooloona amannabihi kullun min AAindi rabbina wama yaththakkaruilla oloo al-albab

He it is that sent down upon thee the Writ; among it are explicit proofs: they are the foundation of the Writ; and others are ambiguous. Then as for those in whose hearts is deviation: they follow what is ambiguous thereof, seeking the means of denial, and seeking its interpretation. And no one knows its interpretation save God, and those firm in knowledge; they say: “We believe in it; all is from our Lord.” But only those of insight take heed.

“Our Lord: make Thou not our hearts to deviate after Thou hast guided us; and bestow Thou upon us mercy from Thyself; Thou art the Bestower.

WaAAtasimoo bihabliAllahi jameeAAan wala tafarraqoo wathkurooniAAmata Allahi AAalaykum ith kuntum aAAdaanfaallafa bayna quloobikum faasbahtum biniAAmatihiikhwanan wakuntum AAala shafa hufratinmina annari faanqathakum minha kathalikayubayyinu Allahu lakum ayatihi laAAallakumtahtadoon

And hold fast to the rope of God all together, and be not divided. And remember the favour of God upon you: when you were enemies, He united your hearts so that by His favour you became brethren; and you were upon the edge of a pit of fire, and He rescued you from it. Thus does God make plain to you His proofs, that you might be guided.

(And God made it not save as glad tidings for you, and that your hearts might be reassured thereby; and there is no help save from God, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.)

Wama muhammadun illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi arrusulu afa-in mataaw qutila inqalabtum AAala aAAqabikum wamanyanqalib AAala AAaqibayhi falan yadurra Allahashay-an wasayajzee Allahu ashshakireen

And Muḥammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If then he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels does no harm to God at all; and God will reward the grateful.

وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ اِلَّا رَسُولٌۚ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُۜ اَفَا۬ئِنْ مَاتَ اَوْ قُتِلَ انْقَلَبْتُمْ عَلٰٓى اَعْقَابِكُمْۜ وَمَنْ يَنْقَلِبْ عَلٰى عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَنْ يَضُرَّ اللّٰهَ شَيْـٔاًۜ وَسَيَجْزِي اللّٰهُ الشَّاكِر۪ينَ

Wama muhammadun illarasoolun qad khalat min qablihi arrusulu afa-in mataaw qutila inqalabtum AAala aAAqabikum wamanyanqalib AAala AAaqibayhi falan yadurra Allahashay-an wasayajzee Allahu ashshakireen

And Muḥammad is only a messenger; messengers have passed away before him. If then he dies or is killed, will you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels does no harm to God at all; and God will reward the grateful.

Sanulqee fee quloobi allatheenakafaroo arruAAba bima ashrakoo billahima lam yunazzil bihi sultanan wama/wahumu annaruwabi/sa mathwa aththalimeen

We will cast into the hearts of those who ignore warning terror because they have ascribed a partnership with God to that for which He sent not down authority; and their shelter is the Fire; and evil is the dwelling of the wrongdoers.

ثُمَّ اَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ الْغَمِّ اَمَنَةً نُعَاساً يَغْشٰى طَٓائِفَةً مِنْكُمْۙ وَطَٓائِفَةٌ قَدْ اَهَمَّتْهُمْ اَنْفُسُهُمْ يَظُنُّونَ بِاللّٰهِ غَيْرَ الْحَقِّ ظَنَّ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِۜ يَقُولُونَ هَلْ لَنَا مِنَ الْاَمْرِ مِنْ شَيْءٍۜ قُلْ اِنَّ الْاَمْرَ كُلَّهُ لِلّٰهِۜ يُخْفُونَ ف۪ٓي اَنْفُسِهِمْ مَا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَۜ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ الْاَمْرِ شَيْءٌ مَا قُتِلْنَا هٰهُنَاۜ قُلْ لَوْ كُنْتُمْ ف۪ي بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ الَّذ۪ينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَتْلُ اِلٰى مَضَاجِعِهِمْۚ وَلِيَبْتَلِيَ اللّٰهُ مَا ف۪ي صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا ف۪ي قُلُوبِكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَل۪يمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ

Thumma anzala AAalaykum min baAAdi alghammiamanatan nuAAasan yaghsha ta-ifatan minkumwata-ifatun qad ahammat-hum anfusuhum yathunnoonabillahi ghayra alhaqqi thannaaljahiliyyati yaqooloona hal lana mina al-amri minshay-in qul inna al-amra kullahu lillahi yukhfoona feeanfusihim ma la yubdoona laka yaqooloona law kanalana mina al-amri shay-on ma qutilna hahunaqul law kuntum fee buyootikum labaraza allatheena kutibaAAalayhimu alqatlu ila madajiAAihim waliyabtaliyaAllahu ma fee sudoorikum waliyumahhisama fee quloobikum wallahu AAaleemun bithatiassudoor

Then He sent down upon you, after distress, security, slumber overcoming a number of you; and a number had grieved themselves thinking about God other than the truth — the thought of ignorance — saying: “Have we any part in the affair?” Say thou: “The affair belongs entirely to God.” They hide within themselves what they reveal not to thee, saying: “Had we any part in the affair, we would not have been slain here.” Say thou: “Had you been in your houses, those for whom killing was decreed would have gone forth to their resting places”; and: “That God might try what is in your breasts”; and: “That He might refine what is in your hearts.” And God knows what is in the breasts.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola takoonoo kallatheena kafaroo waqalooli-ikhwanihim itha daraboo fee al-ardiaw kanoo ghuzzan law kanoo AAindana mamatoo wama qutiloo liyajAAala Allahu thalikahasratan fee quloobihim wallahu yuhyeewayumeetu wallahu bima taAAmaloona baseer

O you who heed warning: be not like those who ignore warning, and say of their brothers when they travel in the earth or are on an expedition: “Had they been with us, they would not have died or been killed,” that God might make that a sorrow in their hearts; for God gives life, and gives death; and God sees what you do.

Fabima rahmatin mina Allahilinta lahum walaw kunta faththan ghaleethaalqalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika faAAfuAAanhum wastaghfir lahum washawirhum fee al-amrifa-itha AAazamta fatawakkal AAala Allahiinna Allaha yuhibbu almutawakkileen

And because of the mercy of God, thou wast lenient with them; and hadst thou been coarse and stern, they would have disbanded from about thee. So pardon thou them, and ask thou forgiveness for them, and take thou counsel with them in the affair. And when thou hast made a decision, place thou thy trust in God; God loves those who would place their trust aright.

WaliyaAAlama allatheena nafaqoowaqeela lahum taAAalaw qatiloo fee sabeeli Allahiawi idfaAAoo qaloo law naAAlamu qitalan lattabaAAnakumhum lilkufri yawma-ithin aqrabu minhum lil-eemaniyaqooloona bi-afwahihim ma laysa fee quloobihim wallahuaAAlamu bima yaktumoon

And that He might know the waverers. And it was said to them: “Come, fight in the cause of God; or repel.” They said: “Had we known of fighting, we would have followed you.” They were nearer to denial that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts; and God is most aware of what conceal

So they returned with favour and bounty from God, evil not touching them. And they sought the approval of God; and God is possessor of tremendous bounty.

Fabima naqdihim meethaqahumwakufrihim bi-ayati Allahi waqatlihimual-anbiyaa bighayri haqqin waqawlihim quloobunaghulfun bal tabaAAa Allahu AAalayhabikufrihim fala yu/minoona illa qaleela

So, because of their violation of their agreement, and their denial of the proofs of God, and their killing of the prophets without cause, and their saying: “Our hearts are covered,” — nay, God sealed them for their denial, so they do not believe save a few —

Fabima naqdihim meethaqahumlaAAannahum wajaAAalna quloobahum qasiyatanyuharrifoona alkalima AAan mawadiAAihi wanasoo haththanmimma thukkiroo bihi wala tazalu tattaliAAuAAala kha-inatin minhum illa qaleelan minhumfaAAfu AAanhum wasfah inna Allahayuhibbu almuhsineen

So for their violation of their agreement We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They twist words from their places, and have forgotten a portion of that they were reminded of. And thou wilt not cease to find treachery among them save a few among them; but pardon thou them, and forbear thou; God loves the doers of good.

Ya ayyuha arrasoolu layahzunka allatheena yusariAAoona fee alkufrimina allatheena qaloo amanna bi-afwahihimwalam tu/min quloobuhum wamina allatheena hadoosammaAAoona lilkathibi sammaAAoona liqawmin akhareenalam ya/tooka yuharrifoona alkalima min baAAdi mawadiAAihiyaqooloona in ooteetum hatha fakhuthoohu wa-in lamtu/tawhu fahtharoo waman yuridi Allahufitnatahu falan tamlika lahu mina Allahi shay-an ola-ikaallatheena lam yuridi Allahu an yutahhiraquloobahum lahum fee addunya khizyun walahum feeal-akhirati AAathabun AAatheem

O Messenger: let there not grieve thee those who compete in denial among those who say: “We believe,” with their mouths, when their hearts have not believed. And among those who hold to Judaism are eager listeners to lies, eager listeners to another people who have not come to thee (they twist words from their places, saying “If this be given you, receive it; but if it be not given you, beware!” And whom God wishes to try: thou wilt not have power for him against God in anything. Those are they whose hearts God desires not to purify; they have in the World disgrace, and they have in the Hereafter a great punishment)

Fatara allatheena feequloobihim maradun yusariAAoona feehim yaqooloonanakhsha an tuseebana da-iratun faAAasaAllahu an ya/tiya bilfathi aw amrin minAAindihi fayusbihoo AAala ma asarroofee anfusihim nadimeen

And thou seest those in whose hearts is disease competing among them, saying: “We fear lest a reversal befall us.” But it may be that God will bring victory or a command from Him and they will become of what they concealed within their souls, remorseful.

Qaloo nureedu an na/kula minhawatatma-inna quloobuna wanaAAlama an qad sadaqtanawanakoona AAalayha mina ashshahideen

They said: “We wish to eat thereof and our hearts to be at rest, and to know that thou hast spoken truth to us, and to be among the witnesses thereto.”

### 6. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 25

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka wajaAAalnaAAala quloobihim akinnatan an yafqahoohu wafee athanihimwaqran wa-in yaraw kulla ayatin la yu/minoo bihahatta itha jaooka yujadiloonakayaqoolu allatheena kafaroo in hatha illa asateerual-awwaleen

And among them are some who listen to thee, but We have placed upon their hearts coverings lest they should understand it, and in their ears deafness; and if they see every proof, they will not believe in it. When they have come to thee, they argue against thee, those who ignore warning, saying: “This is only legends of the former peoples.”

Say thou: “Have you considered: if God takes away your hearing and your sight and seals your hearts, who is the god save God who will restore it to you?” See thou how We expound the proofs; then they turn away.

And We will turn away their hearts and their eyes, even as they believed not in it the first time; and We will leave them wandering blindly in their inordinacy.

Is it not guidance to those who inherit the land after its people that, if We willed, We would strike them for their transgressions, and seal their hearts so they hear not?

Those cities: We relate some of their reports to thee; and their messengers came to them with clear signs, but they were not to believe in what they had denied before; thus God seals the hearts of the false claimers of guidance.

Walaqad thara/na lijahannamakatheeran mina aljinni wal-insi lahum quloobun layafqahoona biha walahum aAAyunun la yubsiroonabiha walahum athanun la yasmaAAoona bihaola-ika kal-anAAami bal hum adalluola-ika humu alghafiloon

And We have created for Gehenna many among the domini and the servi: they have hearts wherewith they understand not; and they have eyes wherewith they see not; and they have ears wherewith they hear not. Those are like cattle; nay, — they are further astray — it is they who are the heedless.

Ith yughashsheekumu annuAAasaamanatan minhu wayunazzilu AAalaykum mina assama-imaan liyutahhirakum bihi wayuthhiba AAankumrijza ashshaytani waliyarbita AAalaquloobikum wayuthabbita bihi al-aqdam

When He made slumber overcome you as security from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky that He might purify you thereby, and to remove from you the scourge of the satan, and to fortify your hearts, and make firm thereby your feet.

When thy Lord instructed the angels: “I am with you; so make firm those who heed warning. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who ignore warning, so strike above the necks, and strike from them every fingertip!”

O you who heed warning: respond to God and the Messenger when He calls you to what gives you life; and know that God stands between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.

When the waverers and those in whose hearts is disease said: “Their doctrine has deceived these”; but whoso places his trust in God: — then God is exalted in might and wise.

Ya ayyuha annabiyyuqul liman fee aydeekum mina al-asra in yaAAlami Allahufee quloobikum khayran yu/tikum khayran mimma okhithaminkum wayaghfir lakum wallahu ghafoorun raheem

O Prophet: say thou to those in your hands of the captives: “If God knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what has been taken from you, and will forgive you”; and God is forgiving and merciful.

How, when if they get the better of you, they observe neither pact of kinship nor obligation to protect? They please you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse; and most of them are perfidious.

And remove the wrath of their hearts; and God relents towards whom He wills; and God is knowing and wise.

There but ask leave of thee those who believe not in God and the Last Day, and whose hearts doubt, so they in their doubt are wavering.

Laqadi ibtaghawoo alfitnata min qabluwaqallaboo laka al-omoora hatta jaa alhaqquwathahara amru Allahi wahum karihoon

They sought the means of denial before, and overturned matters for thee, until the truth came and the command of God was made manifest when they were averse.

Innama assadaqatulilfuqara-i walmasakeeni walAAamileenaAAalayha walmu-allafati quloobuhum wafee arriqabiwalgharimeena wafee sabeeli Allahi wabniassabeeli fareedatan mina Allahi wallahuAAaleemun hakeemun

Charity is but for the poor and the needy, and the workers with it, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for slaves and debtors, and in the cause of God, and the wayfarer — an obligation from God; and God is knowing and wise.

The waverers fear lest a sūrah be sent down against them, proclaiming what is in their hearts; say thou: “You may mock; God will bring forth what you fear.”

فَاَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقاً ف۪ي قُلُوبِهِمْ اِلٰى يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُ بِمَٓا اَخْلَفُوا اللّٰهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ

FaaAAqabahum nifaqan fee quloobihimila yawmi yalqawnahu bima akhlafoo Allaha mawaAAadoohu wabima kanoo yakthiboon

And He requited them with wavering in their hearts to the day they meet Him, because they broke to God what they promised Him, and because they lied.

They will swear by God to you when you return to them, that you might let them be. So let them be, for they are an abomination, and their shelter is Gehenna; a reward for what they earned.

God has turned towards the Prophet, and the émigrés, and the helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a faction among them had almost deviated; then turned He towards them — He is to them kind and merciful —

And Moses said: “Our Lord: Thou hast given Pharaoh and his eminent ones adornment and wealth in the life of this world, our Lord, that they might lead astray from Thy path. Our Lord: destroy Thou their wealth, and harden Thou their hearts, so that they believe not until they see the painful punishment.”

Whoso denies God after his faith[...] — save he who is compelled thereto but whose heart finds rest in faith; but whoso expands his breast to denial, upon them is wrath from God; and they have a great punishment.

And We have placed upon their hearts coverings lest they should understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when thou rememberest thy Lord alone in the Qur’an, they turn their backs in aversion.

And We strengthened their hearts when they stood up and said: “Our Lord is the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth; we will not call, besides Him, to any god, for then would we have said a wanton falsehood.”

Watahsabuhum ayqathanwahum ruqoodun wanuqallibuhum thata alyameeni wathataashshimali wakalbuhum basitun thiraAAayhibilwaseedi lawi ittalaAAta AAalayhimlawallayta minhum firaran walamuli/ta minhum ruAAba

And thou thinkest them awake, when they are asleep; and We cause them to turn to the right and the left.) And their dog was stretching out its two paws on the threshold — hadst thou looked upon them, thou wouldst have turned away from them in flight and been filled with terror of them.

Wasbir nafsaka maAAa allatheenayadAAoona rabbahum bilghadati walAAashiyyiyureedoona wajhahu wala taAAdu AAaynaka AAanhumtureedu zeenata alhayati addunya walatutiAA man aghfalna qalbahu AAan thikrinawattabaAAa hawahu wakana amruhu furuta

And make thou thy soul patient, with those who call to their Lord, morning and evening, seeking His face. And let not thine eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of the life of this world; and obey thou not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and follows his vain desire and whose affair is neglect.

And encompassed were his fruits; and he began to wring his hands for all that he had spent therein, but it was desolate and in ruins. And he said: “Would that I had not ascribed a partnership with my Lord to anyone!”

And who is more unjust than he who is reminded of the proofs of his Lord, then turns away therefrom and forgets what his hands have sent ahead? We have placed upon their hearts coverings lest they should understand it, and in their ears deafness. And though thou invitest them to the guidance, they will not be guided then ever.

### 21. Surah Al-Anbiya, Verse 3

Their hearts distracted. And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation: “Is this save a mortal like you? Will you go to sorcery with open eyes?”

### 22. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 11

Wamina annasi man yaAAbuduAllaha AAala harfin fa-in asabahukhayrun itmaanna bihi wa-in asabat-hu fitnatuninqalaba AAala wajhihi khasira addunya wal-akhiratathalika huwa alkhusranu almubeen

And among men is he who serves God upon an edge: if good befalls him he is assuaged thereby, but if a means of denial befalls him he makes an about-face; he has lost the World and the Hereafter. That is the clear loss.

Whose hearts are afraid when God is remembered, and those patient over what befalls them, and who uphold the duty, and of what We have provided them they spend.

(Have they not travelled in the earth and had hearts with which to reason, or ears with which to hear? And it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the hearts which are in the breasts.

And that those given knowledge might know that it is the truth from thy Lord, and believe in it, and their hearts might humble themselves to Him; and God guides those who heed warning to a straight path.

The truth is, their hearts are in a flood of ignorance about this. And they have works besides that which they are doing.

Men whom neither trade nor commerce divert from the remembrance of God and upholding the duty and rendering the purity. They fear a day wherein the hearts and the eyes will turn about,
