- **Meaning:** To precede, come forward, head a people. Qadima - to come, return, come back from, turn, advance, set upon, betake one's self. Qadamun - merit, rank, precedence, human foot, footing, foundation, example, strength. Qadama sidqin - advancement, going forward in excellence, footing of firmness, strong and honourable footing, true rank, precedence of truthfulness. Qadim - old, ancient. Aqdamuna - forefathers. Qaddama (vb. 2) - to bring upon, prefer, send before, prepare beforehand. Taqaddama (vb. 5) - to advance, proceed, go forward, be previously (done or said), bring upon, send before, put forward (a threat), (threaten) beforehand, obtrude (opinion), be promoted, proposed, surpass, outstrip any one. Istaqdama - to desire to advance, wish to anticipate, advance boldly. Mustaqdimun - one who goes forward or desires to advance, who goes ahead, who lived before, foremost.

“Your women are a tilth for you; so come to your tilth as you will, and send ahead for your souls; and be in prudent fear of God, and know that you will meet Him.” And bear thou glad tidings to the believers.

How will it be when calamity befalls them because of what their hands have sent ahead? Then will they come to thee, swearing by God: “We intended only good conduct and success!”

Thou seest many of them taking allies of those who ignore warning; evil is what their souls have sent ahead for them, that God is wroth with them; and in the punishment will they abide eternally.

Ith yughashsheekumu annuAAasaamanatan minhu wayunazzilu AAalaykum mina assama-imaan liyutahhirakum bihi wayuthhiba AAankumrijza ashshaytani waliyarbita AAalaquloobikum wayuthabbita bihi al-aqdam

When He made slumber overcome you as security from Him, and sent down upon you water from the sky that He might purify you thereby, and to remove from you the scourge of the satan, and to fortify your hearts, and make firm thereby your feet.

Akana linnasi AAajabanan awhayna ila rajulin minhum an anthiriannasa wabashshiri allatheena amanooanna lahum qadama sidqin AAinda rabbihim qala alkafiroonainna hatha lasahirun mubeen

Was it a wonder to men that We revealed to a man among them: “Warn thou men, and bear thou glad tidings to those who heed warning, that they have a precedence of honour in the sight of their Lord”? The false claimers of guidance say: “This is an obvious sorcerer.”

Say thou: “I have power to do myself neither harm nor benefit save that God should will.” For every community is a term; when their term comes, then they will not defer an hour, nor will they advance.

### 11. Surah Hud, Verse 98

Walaw yu-akhithu Allahuannasa bithulmihim ma tarakaAAalayha min dabbatin walakin yu-akhkhiruhumila ajalin musamman fa-itha jaa ajaluhum layasta/khiroona saAAatan wala yastaqdimoon

And were God to take men to task for their injustice, He would not leave upon it any creature; but He delays them to a stated term. And when their term comes, they will not defer an hour, nor will they advance.

Wala tattakhithoo aymanakumdakhalan baynakum fatazilla qadamun baAAda thubootiha watathooqooassoo-a bima sadadtum AAan sabeeli Allahiwalakum AAathabun AAatheem

And take not your oaths as a deception between you lest a foot slip after its being firm and you taste evil for turning away from the path of God, and for you there be a great punishment.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 57

Waman athlamu mimman thukkirabi-ayati rabbihi faaAArada AAanhawanasiya ma qaddamat yadahu inna jaAAalnaAAala quloobihim akinnatan an yafqahoohu wafee athanihimwaqran wa-in tadAAuhum ila alhuda falan yahtadoo ithanabada

And who is more unjust than he who is reminded of the proofs of his Lord, then turns away therefrom and forgets what his hands have sent ahead? We have placed upon their hearts coverings lest they should understand it, and in their ears deafness. And though thou invitest them to the guidance, they will not be guided then ever.

And were it not that calamity should befall them because of what their hands sent ahead[...]. Then will they say: “Our Lord: oh, that Thou hadst but sent for us a messenger, then would we have followed Thy proofs and been among the believers!”

And when We let men taste mercy, they exult thereat; but if evil befalls them because of what their hands sent ahead, then they despair.

Inna nahnu nuhyeealmawta wanaktubu ma qaddamoo waatharahumwakulla shay-in ahsaynahu fee imamin mubeen

We give life to the dead, and record what they sent ahead and they left behind; and everything have We counted in a clear book.

And if they turn away — We sent thee not as a custodian over them; upon thee is only the notification. And when We let man taste mercy from Us, he exults thereat; but if evil befalls them because of what their hands sent ahead, then is man ungrateful.

And those who ignore warning say of those who heed warning: “Had it been good, they would not have preceded us to it.” And when they are not guided by it, then they will say: “This is an ancient falsehood.”

### 58. Surah Al-Mujadila, Verse 12

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooitha najaytumu arrasoola faqaddimoo baynayaday najwakum sadaqatan thalika khayrunlakum waatharu fa-in lam tajidoo fa-inna Allahaghafoorun raheem

O you who heed warning: when you converse confidentially with the Messenger, send ahead charity before your private conversation. That is better for you, and purer. But if you find not the means — God is forgiving and merciful.

### 58. Surah Al-Mujadila, Verse 13

Aashfaqtum an tuqaddimoo bayna yaday najwakumsadaqatin fa-ith lam tafAAaloo watabaAllahu AAalaykum faaqeemoo assalatawaatoo azzakata waateeAAoo Allahawarasoolahu wallahu khabeerun bimataAAmaloon

Fear you to send ahead charity before your private conversation? Then when you do not — and God has turned towards you — then uphold the duty and render the purity, and obey God and His messenger. And God is aware of what you do.

### 59. Surah Al-Hashr, Verse 18

O you who heed warning: be in prudent fear of God. And let a soul look to what it has sent ahead for the morrow. And be in prudent fear of God; God is aware of what you do.

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ تَقُومُ اَدْنٰى مِنْ ثُلُثَيِ الَّيْلِ وَنِصْفَهُ وَثُلُثَهُ وَطَٓائِفَةٌ مِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ مَعَكَۜ وَاللّٰهُ يُقَدِّرُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ لَنْ تُحْصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِۜ عَلِمَ اَنْ سَيَكُونُ مِنْكُمْ مَرْضٰىۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يَضْرِبُونَ فِي الْاَرْضِ يَبْتَغُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِۙ وَاٰخَرُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۘ فَاقْرَؤُ۫ا مَا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْهُۙ وَاَق۪يمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاَقْرِضُوا اللّٰهَ قَرْضاً حَسَناًۜ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُوَ خَيْراً وَاَعْظَمَ اَجْراًۜ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَۜ  اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ

Inna rabbaka yaAAlamu annaka taqoomu adnamin thuluthayi allayli wanisfahu wathuluthahu wata-ifatunmina allatheena maAAaka wallahu yuqaddiruallayla wannahara AAalima an lan tuhsoohufataba AAalaykum faqraoo ma tayassara minaalqur-ani AAalima an sayakoonu minkum marda waakharoonayadriboona fee al-ardi yabtaghoona min fadliAllahi waakharoona yuqatiloona fee sabeeliAllahi faqraoo ma tayassara minhu waaqeemooassalata waatoo azzakatawaaqridoo Allaha qardan hasanan wamatuqaddimoo li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidoohu AAinda Allahihuwa khayran waaAAthama ajran wastaghfirooAllaha inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem

Thy Lord knows that thou standest nearly two-thirds of the night, or a half of it, or a third of it, as does a number of those with thee. And God determines the night and the day. He knew that you would not calculate it, and has turned towards you: — so recite what is made easy of the Qur’an. He knows that there will be some sick among you, and others travelling in the earth in search of the bounty of God, and others fighting in the cause of God: — so recite what is made easy thereof, and uphold the duty, and render the purity, and lend to God a goodly loan. And what good you send ahead for your souls — you will find it with God, better and greater in reward. And ask forgiveness of God; God is forgiving and merciful.

We have warned you of a near punishment: the day a man will look on what his hands sent ahead, and the false claimer of guidance will say: “Would that I were dust!”
