Say thou: “In both is great sin, and benefits for men; but their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask thee what they should spend. And those from whom you fear contempt: admonish them; and leave them in beds apart; and strike them. And God turned them back for what they earned. Seek you to guide him whom God sent astray? Surah An-Nisa, Verse 140 - **Form in this verse:** ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ — l-munāfiqīna · "the hypocrites" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · active · masculine, plural · genitive case وَقَدْ نَزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ اَنْ اِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ اٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَاُ بِهَا فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتّٰى يَخُوضُوا ف۪ي حَد۪يثٍ غَيْرِه۪ۘ اِنَّكُمْ اِذاً مِثْلُهُمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ جَامِـعُ الْمُنَافِق۪ينَ وَالْكَافِر۪ينَ ف۪ي جَهَنَّمَ جَم۪يعاًۙ Waqad nazzala AAalaykum fee alkitabian itha samiAAtum ayati Allahiyukfaru biha wayustahzao biha fala taqAAudoomaAAahum hatta yakhoodoo fee hadeethinghayrihi innakum ithan mithluhum inna Allaha jamiAAualmunafiqeena walkafireena fee jahannamajameeAAa (And He has sent down upon you in the Writ that when you hear the proofs of God denied and mocked: “Sit not with them until they discourse vainly concerning a subject other than that; then would you be like them.”) God will gather the waverers and the false claimers of guidance into Gehenna all together: _https://quran.so/surah-an-nisa/verse-140.md_ ### 4. Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 64 - **Form in this verse:** يُنفِقُ — yunfiqu · "He spends" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 3rd person, masculine, singular · present tense وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ يَدُ اللّٰهِ مَغْلُولَةٌۜ غُلَّتْ اَيْد۪يهِمْ وَلُعِنُوا بِمَا قَالُواۢ بَلْ يَدَاهُ مَبْسُوطَتَانِۙ يُنْفِقُ كَيْفَ يَشَٓاءُۜ وَلَيَز۪يدَنَّ كَث۪يراً مِنْهُمْ مَٓا اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ طُغْيَاناً وَكُفْراًۜ وَاَلْقَيْنَا بَيْنَهُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَٓاءَ اِلٰى يَوْمِ الْقِيٰمَةِۜ كُلَّمَٓا اَوْقَدُوا نَاراً لِلْحَرْبِ اَطْفَاَهَا اللّٰهُۙ وَيَسْعَوْنَ فِي الْاَرْضِ فَسَاداًۜ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُفْسِد۪ينَ Waqalati alyahoodu yadu Allahimaghloolatun ghullat aydeehim waluAAinoo bima qaloobal yadahu mabsootatani yunfiqu kayfa yashaowalayazeedanna katheeran minhum ma onzila ilayka minrabbika tughyanan wakufran waalqaynabaynahumu alAAadawata walbaghdaa ilayawmi alqiyamati kullama awqadoo naran lilharbiatfaaha Allahu wayasAAawna fee al-ardifasadan wallahu la yuhibbualmufsideen And the Rabbinic Jews say: “The hand of God is fettered.” Fettered are their hands! And cursed are they for what they say! Nay, His hands are spread wide; He spends how He wills. And there increases many of them in inordinacy and denial what was sent down to thee from thy Lord. And We have cast among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection; whenever they lit the fire of war, God extinguished it; and they strive in the land for corruption; and God loves not the workers of corruption. _https://quran.so/surah-al-maidah/verse-64.md_ ### 6. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 35 - **Form in this verse:** نَفَقًۭا — nafaqan · "a tunnel" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · accusative case · indefinite وَاِنْ كَانَ كَبُرَ عَلَيْكَ اِعْرَاضُهُمْ فَاِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ اَنْ تَبْتَغِيَ نَفَقاً فِي الْاَرْضِ اَوْ سُلَّماً فِي السَّمَٓاءِ فَتَأْتِيَهُمْ بِاٰيَةٍۜ وَلَوْ شَٓاءَ اللّٰهُ لَجَمَعَهُمْ عَلَى الْهُدٰى فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْجَاهِل۪ينَ Wa-in kana kabura AAalayka iAAraduhumfa-ini istataAAta an tabtaghiya nafaqan fee al-ardiaw sullaman fee assama-i fata/tiyahum bi-ayatinwalaw shaa Allahu lajamaAAahum AAala alhudafala takoonanna mina aljahileen And if their evasion be hard for thee: if thou art able to seek a tunnel in the earth or a stairway in the sky to bring to them a proof[...]. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 91 - **Form in this verse:** يُنفِقُونَ — yunfiqūna · "they (can) spend" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense لَيْسَ عَلَى الضُّعَفَٓاءِ وَلَا عَلَى الْمَرْضٰى وَلَا عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنْفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ اِذَا نَصَحُوا لِلّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ۜ مَا عَلَى الْمُحْسِن۪ينَ مِنْ سَب۪يلٍۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌۙ Laysa AAala adduAAafa-iwala AAala almarda wala AAalaallatheena la yajidoona ma yunfiqoona harajunitha nasahoo lillahi warasoolihi maAAala almuhsineena min sabeelin wallahughafoorun raheem Not upon the weak, nor upon the sick, nor upon those who find not what to spend is there blame, when they are true to God and His messenger — against the doers of good there is no path; and God is forgiving and merciful — _https://quran.so/surah-at-tawbah/verse-91.md_ ### 9. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 92 - **Form in this verse:** يُنفِقُونَ — yunfiqūna · "they (could) spend" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense وَلَا عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ اِذَا مَٓا اَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَٓا اَجِدُ مَٓا اَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِۖ تَوَلَّوْا وَاَعْيُنُهُمْ تَف۪يضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَناً اَلَّا يَجِدُوا مَا يُنْفِقُونَۜ Wala AAala allatheena ithama atawka litahmilahum qulta la ajidu maahmilukum AAalayhi tawallaw waaAAyunuhum tafeedumina addamAAi hazanan alla yajidoo mayunfiqoon Nor upon those to whom, when they came to thee, that thou provide them mounts, thou saidst: “I find not whereon to mount you,” they turned back, their eyes overflowing with tears of grief, that they found not what to spend. _https://quran.so/surah-at-tawbah/verse-92.md_ ### 9. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 97 - **Form in this verse:** وَنِفَاقًۭا — wanifāqan · "and hypocrisy" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case · indefinite اَلْاَعْرَابُ اَشَدُّ كُفْراً وَنِفَاقاً وَاَجْدَرُ اَلَّا يَعْلَمُوا حُدُودَ مَٓا اَنْزَلَ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى رَسُولِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَل۪يمٌ حَك۪يمٌ Al-aAArabu ashaddu kufran wanifaqanwaajdaru alla yaAAlamoo hudooda ma anzalaAllahu AAala rasoolihi wallahuAAaleemun hakeem The desert Arabs are stronger in denial and wavering, and more likely not to know the limits of what God has sent down upon His messenger; and God is knowing and wise. _https://quran.so/surah-at-tawbah/verse-97.md_ ### 9. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 99 - **Form in this verse:** يُنفِقُ — yunfiqu · "he spends" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 3rd person, masculine, singular · present tense وَمِنَ الْاَعْرَابِ مَنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنْفِقُ قُرُبَاتٍ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ وَصَلَوَاتِ الرَّسُولِۜ اَلَٓا اِنَّهَا قُرْبَةٌ لَهُمْۜ سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ اللّٰهُ ف۪ي رَحْمَتِه۪ۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ۟ Wamina al-aAArabi man yu/minu billahiwalyawmi al-akhiri wayattakhithu mayunfiqu qurubatin AAinda Allahi wasalawatiarrasooli ala innaha qurbatun lahumsayudkhiluhumu Allahu fee rahmatihi inna Allahaghafoorun raheem And among the desert Arabs is he who believes in God and the Last Day, and takes what he spends as a means of nearness to God and the duties of the Messenger. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 101 - **Form in this verse:** مُنَـٰفِقُونَ ۖ — munāfiqūna · "(are) hypocrites" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · active · masculine, plural · nominative case وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُمْ مِنَ الْاَعْرَابِ مُنَافِقُونَۜ وَمِنْ اَهْلِ الْمَد۪ينَةِ مَرَدُوا عَلَى النِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْۜ نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْۜ سَنُعَذِّبُهُمْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ اِلٰى عَذَابٍ عَظ۪يمٍۚ Wamimman hawlakum mina al-aAArabimunafiqoona wamin ahli almadeenati maradoo AAala annifaqila taAAlamuhum nahnu naAAlamuhum sanuAAaththibuhummarratayni thumma yuraddoona ila AAathabin AAatheem And among those around you of the desert Arabs are waverers; and among the people of the city — they persist in wavering. Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 73 - **Form in this verse:** ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ — l-munāfiqīna · "the hypocrite men" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · active · masculine, plural · accusative case لِيُعَذِّبَ اللّٰهُ الْمُنَافِق۪ينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْمُشْرِك۪ينَ وَالْمُشْرِكَاتِ وَيَتُوبَ اللّٰهُ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِۜ وَكَانَ اللّٰهُ غَفُوراً رَح۪يماً LiyuAAaththiba Allahu almunafiqeenawalmunafiqati walmushrikeena walmushrikatiwayatooba Allahu AAala almu/mineena walmu/minatiwakana Allahu ghafooran raheema That God might punish the wavering men, and the wavering women, and the idolaters, and the idolatresses; and that God might turn towards the believing men and the believing women. Surah Muhammad, Verse 38 - **Form in this verse:** لِتُنفِقُوا۟ — litunfiqū · "to spend" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 2nd person, masculine, plural · present tense هَٓا اَنْتُمْ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ تُدْعَوْنَ لِتُنْفِقُوا ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۚ فَمِنْكُمْ مَنْ يَبْخَلُۚ وَمَنْ يَبْخَلْ فَاِنَّمَا يَبْخَلُ عَنْ نَفْسِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ الْغَنِيُّ وَاَنْتُمُ الْفُقَـرَٓاءُۚ وَاِنْ تَتَوَلَّوْا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْماً غَيْرَكُمْۙ ثُمَّ لَا يَكُونُٓوا اَمْثَالَكُمْ Ha antum haola-itudAAawna litunfiqoo fee sabeeli Allahi faminkum manyabkhalu waman yabkhal fa-innama yabkhalu AAan nafsihi wallahualghaniyyu waantumu alfuqarao wa-in tatawallaw yastabdilqawman ghayrakum thumma la yakoonoo amthalakum Here you are, called to spend in the cause of God, then among you is he who is miserly; and whoso is miserly, he is but miserly against his soul. And God is the Free from Need, and you are poor. Surah Al-Fath, Verse 6 - **Form in this verse:** ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ — l-munāfiqīna · "the hypocrite men" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · active · masculine, plural · accusative case وَيُعَذِّبَ الْمُنَافِق۪ينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْمُشْرِك۪ينَ وَالْمُشْرِكَاتِ الظَّٓانّ۪ينَ بِاللّٰهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِۜ عَلَيْهِمْ دَٓائِرَةُ السَّوْءِۚ وَغَضِبَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَنَهُمْ وَاَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَهَنَّمَۜ وَسَٓاءَتْ مَص۪يراً WayuAAaththiba almunafiqeena walmunafiqatiwalmushrikeena walmushrikati aththanneenabillahi thanna assaw-iAAalayhim da-iratu assaw-i waghadiba AllahuAAalayhim walaAAanahum waaAAadda lahum jahannama wasaat maseera And punish the wavering men, and the wavering women, and the idolaters, and the idolatresses, — those who think an evil thought about God — for them is an evil reversal; and God is wroth with them, and has cursed them, and has prepared for them Gehenna; and evil is it as a journey’s end. _https://quran.so/surah-al-fath/verse-6.md_ ### 48. Surah Al-Fath, Verse 6 - **Form in this verse:** وَٱلْمُنَـٰفِقَـٰتِ — wal-munāfiqāti · "and the hypocrite women" - **Grammar:** noun · pattern of mufa'ale · active · feminine, plural · accusative case وَيُعَذِّبَ الْمُنَافِق۪ينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْمُشْرِك۪ينَ وَالْمُشْرِكَاتِ الظَّٓانّ۪ينَ بِاللّٰهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِۜ عَلَيْهِمْ دَٓائِرَةُ السَّوْءِۚ وَغَضِبَ اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَنَهُمْ وَاَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَهَنَّمَۜ وَسَٓاءَتْ مَص۪يراً WayuAAaththiba almunafiqeena walmunafiqatiwalmushrikeena walmushrikati aththanneenabillahi thanna assaw-iAAalayhim da-iratu assaw-i waghadiba AllahuAAalayhim walaAAanahum waaAAadda lahum jahannama wasaat maseera And punish the wavering men, and the wavering women, and the idolaters, and the idolatresses, — those who think an evil thought about God — for them is an evil reversal; and God is wroth with them, and has cursed them, and has prepared for them Gehenna; and evil is it as a journey’s end. _https://quran.so/surah-al-fath/verse-6.md_ ### 57. Not equal among you is he who spent and who fought before the victory — those are greater in degree than those who spent and fought afterwards. Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Verse 10 - **Form in this verse:** أَنفَقُوا۟ ۚ — anfaqū · "they have spent" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of if'al · 3rd person, masculine, plural · past tense يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اِذَا جَٓاءَكُمُ الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ مُهَاجِرَاتٍ فَامْتَحِنُوهُنَّۜ اَللّٰهُ اَعْلَمُ بِا۪يمَانِهِنَّۚ فَاِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤْمِنَاتٍ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوهُنَّ اِلَى الْكُفَّارِۜ لَا هُنَّ حِلٌّ لَهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّۜ وَاٰتُوهُمْ مَٓا اَنْفَقُواۜ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ اَنْ تَنْكِحُوهُنَّ اِذَٓا اٰتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ اُجُورَهُنَّۜ وَلَا تُمْسِكُوا بِعِصَمِ الْكَوَافِرِ وَسْـَٔلُوا مَٓا اَنْفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْـَٔلُوا مَٓا اَنْفَقُواۜ ذٰلِكُمْ حُكْمُ اللّٰهِۜ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَل۪يمٌ حَك۪يمٌ Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooitha jaakumu almu/minatu muhajiratinfamtahinoohunna Allahu aAAlamu bi-eemanihinnafa-in AAalimtumoohunna mu/minatin falatarjiAAoohunna ila alkuffari la hunna hillunlahum wala hum yahilloona lahunna waatoohumma anfaqoo wala junaha AAalaykum an tankihoohunnaitha ataytumoohunna ojoorahunna walatumsikoo biAAisami alkawafiri was-aloo maanfaqtum walyas-aloo ma anfaqoo thalikum hukmuAllahi yahkumu baynakum wallahuAAaleemun hakeem O you who heed warning: when the believing women come to you as émigrées: examine them. God best knows their faith. And if you know them to be believing women, then return them not to the atheists. Such women are not lawful for them, and they are not lawful for such women. And give them what they spent. And you do no wrong to marry such women when you give them their rewards. And hold not by tie denying women; and ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent.
