Alam tara ila almala-i min banee isra-eelamin baAAdi moosa ith qaloo linabiyyin lahumuibAAath lana malikan nuqatil fee sabeeli Allahiqala hal AAasaytum in kutiba AAalaykumu alqitalualla tuqatiloo qaloo wama lanaalla nuqatila fee sabeeli Allahi waqadokhrijna min diyarina waabna-inafalamma kutiba AAalayhimu alqitalu tawallaw illaqaleelan minhum wallahu AAaleemun biththalimeen

Hast thou not considered the eminent ones of the children of Israel after Moses? When they said to a prophet of theirs: “Raise thou up for us a king; we will fight in the cause of God,” he said: “Would you, if fighting be prescribed for you, not fight?” They said: “And why should we not fight in the cause of God when we have been turned out of our homes, and our children?” But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away save a few of them. And God knows the wrongdoers.

Inna allatheena kafaroo wamatoowahum kuffarun falan yuqbala min ahadihim miloal-ardi thahaban walawi iftada bihi ola-ikalahum AAathabun aleemun wama lahum min nasireen

Those who ignore warning and die as atheists: there would not be accepted from one of them the earth full of gold were he to seek to ransom himself thereby; those have a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.

Qala almalao allatheenaistakbaroo min qawmihi lillatheena istudAAifooliman amana minhum ataAAlamoona anna salihanmursalun min rabbihi qaloo inna bima orsilabihi mu/minoon

Said the eminent ones who had waxed proud among his people to those they counted weak, to those who believed among them: “Know you that Ṣāliḥ is an emissary from his Lord?” They said: “We believe in that wherewith he has been sent.”

Said the eminent ones who had waxed proud among his people: “We will turn thee, O Shuʿayb, and those who heed warning with thee, out of our city if you return not to our creed.” He said: “Even though we be unwilling?

Then We raised up after them Moses with Our proofs to Pharaoh and his eminent ones, but they wronged them; then see thou how was the final outcome of the workers of corruption: —

Waqala almalao min qawmi firAAawnaatatharu moosa waqawmahu liyufsidoo fee al-ardiwayatharaka waalihataka qala sanuqattilu abnaahumwanastahyee nisaahum wa-inna fawqahum qahiroon

And the eminent ones among the people of Pharaoh said: “Wilt thou leave Moses and his people to work corruption in the land, and leave thee and thy gods?” Said he: “We will kill their sons and spare their women; for indeed we have them in subjugation.”

Fama amana limoosa illathurriyyatun min qawmihi AAala khawfin minfirAAawna wamala-ihim an yaftinahum wa-inna firAAawna laAAalinfee al-ardi wa-innahu lamina almusrifeen

And there believed not Moses save a progeny of his people, for fear of Pharaoh and their eminent ones, that they would subject them to means of denial; and Pharaoh was exalted in the land, and he was of the committers of excess.

Waqala moosa rabbanainnaka atayta firAAawna wamalaahu zeenatan waamwalanfee alhayati addunya rabbanaliyudilloo AAan sabeelika rabbana itmis AAalaamwalihim washdud AAala quloobihim falayu/minoo hatta yarawoo alAAathaba al-aleem

And Moses said: “Our Lord: Thou hast given Pharaoh and his eminent ones adornment and wealth in the life of this world, our Lord, that they might lead astray from Thy path. Our Lord: destroy Thou their wealth, and harden Thou their hearts, so that they believe not until they see the painful punishment.”

Faqala almalao allatheenakafaroo min qawmihi ma naraka illa basharanmithlana wama naraka ittabaAAaka illaallatheena hum arathiluna badiya arra/yiwama nara lakum AAalayna min fadlinbal nathunnukum kathibeen

Then said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people: “We see thee not but as a mortal like us; and we see not that any follow thee save those who are the abject among us, at first appearance; and we see not in you over us any merit. The truth is, we think you are liars.”

And he made the ship. And every time eminent ones among his people passed by him they derided him. He said: “If you deride us, yet will we deride you just as you deride,

Save he upon whom thy Lord has mercy. And for that He created them; and the word of thy Lord will be fulfilled: “I will fill Gehenna with the jinna and mankind all together.”

Waqala almaliku innee arasabAAa baqaratin simanin ya/kuluhunna sabAAun AAijafunwasabAAa sunbulatin khudrin waokhara yabisatinya ayyuha almalao aftoonee fee ru/yaya inkuntum lirru/ya taAAburoon

And the King said: “I dreamed of seven fat cows, which seven lean were eating; and seven green ears of corn and others withered. O eminent ones: advise me concerning my dream, if you can interpret visions.”

Watahsabuhum ayqathanwahum ruqoodun wanuqallibuhum thata alyameeni wathataashshimali wakalbuhum basitun thiraAAayhibilwaseedi lawi ittalaAAta AAalayhimlawallayta minhum firaran walamuli/ta minhum ruAAba

And thou thinkest them awake, when they are asleep; and We cause them to turn to the right and the left.) And their dog was stretching out its two paws on the threshold — hadst thou looked upon them, thou wouldst have turned away from them in flight and been filled with terror of them.

Faqala almalao allatheenakafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharunmithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala AAalaykum walaw shaaAllahu laanzala mala-ikatan ma samiAAnabihatha fee aba-ina al-awwaleen

Then said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people: “This is only a mortal like you, desiring to take precedence over you. And had God willed, He would have sent down angels. We heard not of this among our fathers of old.

Waqala almalao min qawmihi allatheenakafaroo wakaththaboo biliqa-i al-akhiratiwaatrafnahum fee alhayati addunyama hatha illa basharun mithlukum ya/kulumimma ta/kuloona minhu wayashrabu mimma tashraboon

And said the eminent ones of his people, those who ignored warning and denied the meeting of the Hereafter and to whom We had given opulence in the life of this world: “This is only a mortal like you: he eats of that whereof you eat, and drinks of that you drink.

To Pharaoh and his eminent ones; but they had waxed proud, and they were a self-exalting people.

And a man came running from the furthest part of the city: — he said: “O Moses: the eminent ones are taking counsel against thee, to kill thee. So leave thou. I am to thee a sincere counsellor.”

Osluk yadaka fee jaybika takhruj baydaamin ghayri soo-in wadmum ilayka janahakamina arrahbi fathanika burhanani minrabbika ila firAAawna wamala-ihi innahum kanooqawman fasiqeen

“Insert thou thy hand into thy bosom; it will come forth white, without evil. And draw thou thine arm to thee against fear. And these are two evidences from thy Lord to Pharaoh and his eminent ones; they are a perfidious people.”

And Pharaoh said: “O eminent ones: I know not that you have a god other than me. So kindle thou for me, O Hāmān, upon the clay, and make thou for me a tower, that I might look upon the god of Moses; and I think him of the liars.”
