La ikraha fee addeeniqad tabayyana arrushdu mina alghayyi faman yakfur bittaghootiwayu/min billahi faqadi istamsaka bilAAurwatialwuthqa la infisama laha wallahusameeAAun AAaleem

There is no compulsion in doctrine; sound judgment has become clear from error. So whoso denies idols and believes in God, he has grasped the most firm handhold which has no break; and God is hearing and knowing.

O you who heed warning: it is not lawful for you to inherit from women against their will; and neither constrain them that you might take away part of what you gave them save that they commit manifest sexual immorality. And live with them according to what is fitting. And if you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and God makes therein much good.

Qala almalao allatheenaistakbaroo min qawmihi lanukhrijannaka ya shuAAaybu wallatheenaamanoo maAAaka min qaryatina aw lataAAoodunna feemillatina qala awa law kunna kariheen

Said the eminent ones who had waxed proud among his people: “We will turn thee, O Shuʿayb, and those who heed warning with thee, out of our city if you return not to our creed.” He said: “Even though we be unwilling?

Yureedoona an yutfi-oo noora Allahibi-afwahihim waya/ba Allahu illa anyutimma noorahu walaw kariha alkafiroon

They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths; and God refuses save to perfect His light, though the false claimers of guidance be averse.

He it is that sent His messenger with the guidance and the doctrine of truth, that He might make it manifest over all doctrine, though the idolaters be averse.

And had they wished to go forth, they would have made preparation for it. But God was averse to their being sent forth, and held them back, and it was said: “Sit with those that sit.”

They sought the means of denial before, and overturned matters for thee, until the truth came and the command of God was made manifest when they were averse.

وَمَا مَنَعَهُمْ اَنْ تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَاتُهُمْ اِلَّٓا اَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُوا بِاللّٰهِ وَبِرَسُولِه۪ وَلَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلٰوةَ اِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالٰى وَلَا يُنْفِقُونَ اِلَّا وَهُمْ كَارِهُونَ

Wama manaAAahum an tuqbala minhumnafaqatuhum illa annahum kafaroo billahiwabirasoolihi wala ya/toona assalatailla wahum kusala wala yunfiqoona illawahum karihoon

And there prevents their expenditures being accepted from them only that they denied God and His messenger, and come not to the duty save as idlers, and spend not save unwillingly.

فَرِحَ الْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَافَ رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ وَكَرِهُٓوا اَنْ يُجَاهِدُوا بِاَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاَنْفُسِهِمْ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَقَالُوا لَا تَنْفِرُوا فِي الْحَرِّۜ قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ اَشَدُّ حَراًّۜ لَوْ كَانُوا يَفْقَهُونَ

Fariha almukhallafoona bimaqAAadihimkhilafa rasooli Allahi wakarihoo an yujahidoobi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahi waqaloola tanfiroo fee alharri qul naru jahannamaashaddu harran law kanoo yafqahoon

Those who remained behind exulted at their remaining behind the messenger of God, and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of God; and they said: “Go not forth in the heat.” Say thou: “The fire of Gehenna is more intense in heat,” would that they understood.

And had thy Lord willed, whoso is in the earth would have believed — all of them all together. Wouldst thou then compel mankind until they believe?

Qala ya qawmi araaytum inkuntu AAala bayyinatin min rabbee waataneerahmatan min AAindihi faAAummiyat AAalaykum anulzimukumoohawaantum laha karihoon

He said: “O my people: have you considered: if I be upon clear evidence from my Lord, and there has come to me mercy from Him, but made obscure to you: should we compel you to it when you are averse to it?”

And they assign to God what they dislike; and their tongues describe the lie that they will have the best. Without doubt, they will have the Fire, and they will be rushed in.

Man kafara billahi minbaAAdi eemanihi illa man okriha waqalbuhu mutma-innunbil-eemani walakin man sharaha bilkufrisadran faAAalayhim ghadabun mina Allahiwalahum AAathabun AAatheem

Whoso denies God after his faith[...] — save he who is compelled thereto but whose heart finds rest in faith; but whoso expands his breast to denial, upon them is wrath from God; and they have a great punishment.

Kullu thalika kana sayyi-ohuAAinda rabbika makrooha

### 23. Surah Al-Mu'minun, Verse 70

### 24. Surah An-Nur, Verse 33

WalyastaAAfifi allatheena layajidoona nikahan hatta yughniyahumu Allahumin fadlihi wallatheena yabtaghoona alkitabamimma malakat aymanukum fakatiboohum inAAalimtum feehim khayran waatoohum min mali Allahiallathee atakum wala tukrihoo fatayatikumAAala albigha-i in aradna tahassunanlitabtaghoo AAarada alhayati addunyawaman yukrihhunna fa-inna Allaha min baAAdi ikrahihinnaghafoorun raheem

And let abstain those who find not marriage until God enriches them out of His bounty. And those who seek the writ from among those your right hands possess: contract with them if you know good to be in them; and give to them out of the wealth God has given you. And compel not your slave-girls to whoredom, if they desire chastity[...] — seeking the enjoyment of the life of this world. And whoso compels them, then God, after their compulsion, is forgiving and merciful.

Then He directed Himself to the sky when it was smoke, and said to it and to the earth: “Come, willingly or unwillingly.” They said: “We come willingly.”

### 43. Surah Az-Zukhruf, Verse 78

Wawassayna al-insanabiwalidayhi ihsanan hamalat-hu ommuhukurhan wawadaAAat-hu kurhan wahamluhu wafisaluhuthalathoona shahran hatta ithabalagha ashuddahu wabalagha arbaAAeena sanatan qala rabbiawziAAnee an ashkura niAAmataka allatee anAAamta AAalayya waAAalawalidayya waan aAAmala salihan tardahuwaaslih lee fee thurriyyatee innee tubtuilayka wa-innee mina almuslimeen

And We enjoined upon man: towards his parents, good conduct. His mother bore him with aversion, and brought him forth with aversion; and the bearing of him and the weaning of him is thirty months. When he has reached maturity, and reaches forty years, he says: “My Lord: direct Thou me to be grateful for Thy favour with which Thou hast favoured me and my parents, and to work righteousness pleasing to Thee; and make Thou me right in my progeny. I have turned to Thee repentant. And I am of those submitting.”

For it is that they said to those who were averse to what God sent down: “We will obey you in part of the matter!” But God knows their secrets.

WaAAlamoo anna feekum rasoola Allahilaw yuteeAAukum fee katheerin mina al-amri laAAanittum walakinnaAllaha habbaba ilaykumu al-eemanawazayyanahu fee quloobikum wakarraha ilaykumu alkufra walfusooqawalAAisyana ola-ika humu arrashidoon

And know that among you is the messenger of God. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be distressed. But God has endeared to you faith, and made it fair in your hearts, and has made hateful to you denial and perfidy and opposition — it is they who are the right-minded —

### 49. Surah Al-Hujurat, Verse 12

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooijtaniboo katheeran mina aththanni innabaAAda aththanni ithmun walatajassasoo wala yaghtab baAAdukum baAAdanayuhibbu ahadukum an ya/kula lahma akheehimaytan fakarihtumoohu wattaqoo Allaha inna Allahatawwabun raheem

O you who heed warning: avoid much assumption; some assumption is sin. And spy not; neither backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And be in prudent fear of God; God is accepting of repentance and merciful.

### 61. Surah As-Saf, Verse 8

Yureedoona liyutfi-oo noora Allahibi-afwahihim wallahu mutimmu noorihi walawkariha alkafiroon

They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths; but God will perfect His light, though the false claimers of guidance be averse.

Huwa allathee arsala rasoolahu bilhudawadeeni alhaqqi liyuthhirahu AAala addeenikullihi walaw kariha almushrikoon

He it is that sent His messenger with the guidance and the doctrine of truth that He might make it manifest over all doctrine, though the idolaters be averse.
