Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 53 - **Form in this verse:** جَهْدَ — jahda · "strongest" - **Grammar:** noun · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case وَيَقُولُ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُٓوا اَهٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ الَّذ۪ينَ اَقْسَمُوا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْۙ اِنَّهُمْ لَمَعَكُمْۜ حَبِطَتْ اَعْمَالُهُمْ فَاَصْبَحُوا خَاسِر۪ينَ Wayaqoolu allatheena amanoo ahaola-iallatheena aqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihiminnahum lamaAAakum habitat aAAmaluhum faasbahookhasireen And those who heed warning will say: “Are these they who swore by God their strongest oaths that they were with you?” Their works have become vain; and they have become losers. _https://quran.so/surah-al-maidah/verse-53.md_ ### 5. Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 54 - **Form in this verse:** يُجَـٰهِدُونَ — yujāhidūna · "striving" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, plural · present tense يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مَنْ يَرْتَدَّ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ د۪ينِه۪ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللّٰهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُٓ اَذِلَّةٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ اَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى الْكَافِر۪ينَۘ يُجَاهِدُونَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا يَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَٓائِمٍۜ ذٰلِكَ فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ يُؤْت۪يهِ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُۜ وَاللّٰهُ وَاسِعٌ عَل۪يمٌ Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooman yartadda minkum AAan deenihi fasawfa ya/tee Allahubiqawmin yuhibbuhum wayuhibboonahu athillatinAAala almu/mineena aAAizzatin AAala alkafireenayujahidoona fee sabeeli Allahi wala yakhafoonalawmata la-imin thalika fadlu Allahiyu/teehi man yashao wallahu wasiAAunAAaleem O you who heed warning: whoso among you renounces his doctrine: God will bring a people whom He will love, and who will love Him: humble towards the believers; stern towards the false claimers of guidance; striving in the cause of God, and fearing not the reproach of a critic. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 109 - **Form in this verse:** جَهْدَ — jahda · "strongest" - **Grammar:** noun · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case وَاَقْسَمُوا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ جَٓاءَتْهُمْ اٰيَةٌ لَيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَاۜ قُلْ اِنَّمَا الْاٰيَاتُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ وَمَا يُشْعِرُكُمْۙ اَنَّـهَٓا اِذَا جَٓاءَتْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ Waaqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihimla-in jaat-hum ayatun layu/minunna biha qulinnama al-ayatu AAinda Allahi wamayushAAirukum annaha itha jaat layu/minoon And they swore by God their strongest oaths that if a proof came to them they would believe in it. Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 72 - **Form in this verse:** وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ — wajāhadū · "and strove hard" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, plural · past tense اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِاَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاَنْفُسِهِمْ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰوَوْا وَنَصَرُٓوا اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ اَوْلِيَٓاءُ بَعْضٍۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَلَمْ يُهَاجِرُوا مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ وَلَايَتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ حَتّٰى يُهَاجِرُواۚ وَاِنِ اسْتَنْصَرُوكُمْ فِي الدّ۪ينِ فَعَلَيْكُمُ النَّصْرُ اِلَّا عَلٰى قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ م۪يثَاقٌۜ وَاللّٰهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَص۪يرٌ Inna allatheena amanoo wahajaroowajahadoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahiwallatheena awaw wanasaroo ola-ikabaAAduhum awliyao baAAdin wallatheenaamanoo walam yuhajiroo ma lakum min walayatihimmin shay-in hatta yuhajiroo wa-ini istansarookumfee addeeni faAAalaykumu annasru illaAAala qawmin baynakum wabaynahum meethaqun wallahubima taAAmaloona baseer Those who heeded warning, and emigrated, and strove with their property and their lives in the cause of God, and those who gave shelter and helped: those are allies one of another. And those who heed warning but have not emigrated: you are not required to protect them from anything until they emigrate; and if they seek help from you within the doctrine, you are required to help save against a people between whom and you is an agreement; and God sees what you do. _https://quran.so/surah-al-anfal/verse-72.md_ ### 8. Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 75 - **Form in this verse:** وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ — wajāhadū · "and strove hard" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, plural · past tense وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مِنْ بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَكُمْ فَاُو۬لٰٓئِكَ مِنْكُمْۜ وَاُو۬لُوا الْاَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ اَوْلٰى بِبَعْضٍ ف۪ي كِتَابِ اللّٰهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَل۪يمٌ Wallatheena amanoo minbaAAdu wahajaroo wajahadoo maAAakum faola-ikaminkum waoloo al-arhami baAAduhum awlabibaAAdin fee kitabi Allahi inna Allahabikulli shay-in AAaleem And those who heed warning thereafter, and emigrate, and strive beside you: those are of you; but those of kinship are closer to one another in the Writ of God; God knows all things. _https://quran.so/surah-al-anfal/verse-75.md_ ### 9. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 16 - **Form in this verse:** جَـٰهَدُوا۟ — jāhadū · "strive" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, plural · past tense اَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ اَنْ تُتْرَكُوا وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ينَ جَاهَدُوا مِنْكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا رَسُولِه۪ وَلَا الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ وَل۪يجَةًۜ وَاللّٰهُ خَب۪يرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ۟ Am hasibtum an tutrakoo walammayaAAlami Allahu allatheena jahadoo minkumwalam yattakhithoo min dooni Allahi walarasoolihi wala almu/mineena waleejatan wallahukhabeerun bima taAAmaloon If you think that you will be left when God knows not those among you who have striven, and have taken — besides God, and His messenger, and the believers — no confidant[...]. Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 19 - **Form in this verse:** وَجَـٰهَدَ — wajāhada · "and strives" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, singular · past tense اَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَٓاجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَجَاهَدَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۜ لَا يَسْتَوُ۫نَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِۜ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِم۪ينَۢ AjaAAaltum siqayata alhajjiwaAAimarata almasjidi alharami kaman amanabillahi walyawmi al-akhiri wajahadafee sabeeli Allahi la yastawoona AAinda Allahiwallahu la yahdee alqawma aththalimeen Have you made the giving of water to the pilgrim and the inhabiting of the inviolable place of worship like him who believes in God and the Last Day and strives in the cause of God? Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 24 - **Form in this verse:** وَجِهَادٍۢ — wajihādin · "and striving" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · genitive case · indefinite قُلْ اِنْ كَانَ اٰبَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ وَاَبْنَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ وَاِخْوَانُكُمْ وَاَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَش۪يرَتُكُمْ وَاَمْوَالٌۨ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَـهَٓا اَحَبَّ اِلَيْكُمْ مِنَ اللّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ وَجِهَادٍ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِه۪ فَتَرَبَّصُوا حَتّٰى يَأْتِيَ اللّٰهُ بِاَمْرِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِق۪ينَ۟ Qul in kana abaokumwaabnaokum wa-ikhwanukum waazwajukumwaAAasheeratukum waamwalun iqtaraftumooha watijaratuntakhshawna kasadaha wamasakinu tardawnahaahabba ilaykum mina Allahi warasoolihi wajihadinfee sabeelihi fatarabbasoo hatta ya/tiya Allahubi-amrihi wallahu la yahdee alqawma alfasiqeen Say thou: “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your kindred, and the wealth you have acquired, and trade wherein you fear a decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased, be dearer to you than God and His messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until God brings His command”; and God guides not the perfidious people. _https://quran.so/surah-at-tawbah/verse-24.md_ ### 9. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 78 - **Form in this verse:** وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ — wajāhidū · "And strive" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 2nd person, masculine, plural · imperative mood وَجَاهِدُوا فِي اللّٰهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِه۪ۜ هُوَ اجْتَبٰيكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدّ۪ينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍۜ مِلَّةَ اَب۪يكُمْ اِبْرٰه۪يمَۜ هُوَ سَمّٰيكُمُ الْمُسْلِم۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَف۪ي هٰذَا لِيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ شَه۪يداً عَلَيْكُمْ وَتَكُونُوا شُهَدَٓاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِۚ فَاَق۪يمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِاللّٰهِۜ هُوَ مَوْلٰيكُمْۚ فَنِعْمَ الْمَوْلٰى وَنِعْمَ النَّص۪يرُ Wajahidoo fee Allahi haqqajihadihi huwa ijtabakum wama jaAAalaAAalaykum fee addeeni min harajin millata abeekumibraheema huwa sammakumu almuslimeena min qabluwafee hatha liyakoona arrasoolu shaheedanAAalaykum watakoonoo shuhadaa AAala annasifaaqeemoo assalata waatoo azzakatawaAAtasimoo billahi huwa mawlakumfaniAAma almawla waniAAma annaseer And strive for God with the striving due Him. He has chosen you, and has not placed upon you in doctrine any distress — the creed of your father Abraham. He named you those submitting before, and in this, that the Messenger might be a witness to you, and that you might be witnesses to men. So uphold the duty, and render the purity, and hold fast to God; He is your protector. Then excellent is the Protector! Surah Luqman, Verse 15 - **Form in this verse:** جَـٰهَدَاكَ — jāhadāka · "they strive against you" - **Grammar:** verb · pattern of mufa'ale · 3rd person, masculine, dual · past tense وَاِنْ جَاهَدَاكَ عَلٰٓى اَنْ تُشْرِكَ ب۪ي مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِه۪ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا وَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفاًۘ وَاتَّبِعْ سَب۪يلَ مَنْ اَنَابَ اِلَيَّۚ ثُمَّ اِلَيَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ Wa-in jahadaka AAala antushrika bee ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun fala tutiAAhumawasahibhuma fee addunya maAAroofanwattabiAA sabeela man anaba ilayya thumma ilayyamarjiAAukum faonabbi-okum bima kuntum taAAmaloon “But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe a partnership to that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey thou them not. And accompany thou them in the World according to what is fitting; but follow thou the path of him who turns to Me. Surah Fatir, Verse 42 - **Form in this verse:** جَهْدَ — jahda · "(the) strongest" - **Grammar:** noun · noun-verb · masculine · accusative case وَاَقْسَمُوا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ جَٓاءَهُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ لَيَكُونُنَّ اَهْدٰى مِنْ اِحْدَى الْاُمَمِۚ فَلَمَّا جَٓاءَهُمْ نَذ۪يرٌ مَا زَادَهُمْ اِلَّا نُفُوراًۙ Waaqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihimla-in jaahum natheerun layakoonunna ahda minihda al-omami falamma jaahum natheerunma zadahum illa nufoora And they swore by God their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than any of the communities; but when a warner came to them, it increased them only in aversion, _https://quran.so/surah-fatir/verse-42.md_ ### 47. Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Verse 1 - **Form in this verse:** جِهَـٰدًۭا — jihādan · "(to) strive" - **Grammar:** noun · masculine · accusative case · indefinite يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا عَدُوّ۪ي وَعَدُوَّكُمْ اَوْلِيَٓاءَ تُلْقُونَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِمَا جَٓاءَكُمْ مِنَ الْحَقِّۚ يُخْرِجُونَ الرَّسُولَ وَاِيَّاكُمْ اَنْ تُؤْمِنُوا بِاللّٰهِ رَبِّكُمْۜ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَاداً ف۪ي سَب۪يل۪ي وَابْتِغَٓاءَ مَرْضَات۪ي تُسِرُّونَ اِلَيْهِمْ بِالْمَوَدَّةِۗ وَاَنَا۬ اَعْلَمُ بِمَٓا اَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَٓا اَعْلَنْتُمْۜ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْهُ مِنْكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَٓاءَ السَّب۪يلِ Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tattakhithoo AAaduwwee waAAaduwwakum awliyaatulqoona ilayhim bilmawaddati waqad kafaroo bima jaakummina alhaqqi yukhrijoona arrasoola wa-iyyakuman tu/minoo billahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtumjihadan fee sabeelee wabtighaa mardateetusirroona ilayhim bilmawaddati waana aAAlamu bimaakhfaytum wama aAAlantum waman yafAAalhu minkum faqad dallasawaa assabeel O you who heed warning: take not My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending to them love, when they have denied that which has come to you of the truth — they, turning out the Messenger and you because you believe in God, your Lord, if you go forth to strive in My cause and seeking My pleasure — showing them love in secret.
