- **Meaning:** To strive or labour or toil, exert oneself or his power or efforts, employ oneself vigorously or diligently or studiously, take extra pains, put oneself to trouble or fatigue, examine someone or something, to burden or weaken or fatigue beyond one's power, churn and extract from a thing, very eagerly desire or long for something, lay upon or compress, become manifest, to fight for a cause, be in a state of extreme difficulty or trouble, meditate upon something, to overload (such as a camel or cattle), strive after, struggle against difficulties.

La yastawee alqaAAidoona minaalmu/mineena ghayru olee addarari walmujahidoonafee sabeeli Allahi bi-amwalihim waanfusihim faddalaAllahu almujahideena bi-amwalihimwaanfusihim AAala alqaAAideena darajatan wakullanwaAAada Allahu alhusna wafaddala Allahualmujahideena AAala alqaAAideena ajran AAatheema

Not equal are those among the believers who sit — those without injury — and those who strive in the cause of God with their wealth and their lives. God has favoured those who strive with their wealth and their lives with a degree above those who sit; and each has God promised good, but He has favoured those who strive over those who sit with a great reward,

O you who heed warning: be in prudent fear of God, and seek to Him the means of approach; and strive in His cause, that you might be successful.

Wayaqoolu allatheena amanoo ahaola-iallatheena aqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihiminnahum lamaAAakum habitat aAAmaluhum faasbahookhasireen

And those who heed warning will say: “Are these they who swore by God their strongest oaths that they were with you?” Their works have become vain; and they have become losers.

### 5. Surah Al-Ma'idah, Verse 54

يَٓا اَيُّهَا الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مَنْ يَرْتَدَّ مِنْكُمْ عَنْ د۪ينِه۪ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللّٰهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُٓ  اَذِلَّةٍ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ اَعِزَّةٍ عَلَى الْكَافِر۪ينَۘ يُجَاهِدُونَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا يَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَٓائِمٍۜ ذٰلِكَ فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ يُؤْت۪يهِ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُۜ وَاللّٰهُ وَاسِعٌ عَل۪يمٌ

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooman yartadda minkum AAan deenihi fasawfa ya/tee Allahubiqawmin yuhibbuhum wayuhibboonahu athillatinAAala almu/mineena aAAizzatin AAala alkafireenayujahidoona fee sabeeli Allahi wala yakhafoonalawmata la-imin thalika fadlu Allahiyu/teehi man yashao wallahu wasiAAunAAaleem

O you who heed warning: whoso among you renounces his doctrine: God will bring a people whom He will love, and who will love Him: humble towards the believers; stern towards the false claimers of guidance; striving in the cause of God, and fearing not the reproach of a critic. That is the bounty of God He gives to whom He wills; and God is encompassing and knowing.

### 6. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 109

وَاَقْسَمُوا بِاللّٰهِ جَهْدَ اَيْمَانِهِمْ لَئِنْ جَٓاءَتْهُمْ اٰيَةٌ لَيُؤْمِنُنَّ بِهَاۜ قُلْ اِنَّمَا الْاٰيَاتُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ وَمَا يُشْعِرُكُمْۙ اَنَّـهَٓا اِذَا جَٓاءَتْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Waaqsamoo billahi jahda aymanihimla-in jaat-hum ayatun layu/minunna biha qulinnama al-ayatu AAinda Allahi wamayushAAirukum annaha itha jaat layu/minoon

And they swore by God their strongest oaths that if a proof came to them they would believe in it. Say thou: “The proofs are only with God.” And what will make you perceive that, if one comes, they will not believe?

### 8. Surah Al-Anfal, Verse 72

اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا بِاَمْوَالِهِمْ وَاَنْفُسِهِمْ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰوَوْا وَنَصَرُٓوا اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ اَوْلِيَٓاءُ بَعْضٍۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَلَمْ يُهَاجِرُوا مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ وَلَايَتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ حَتّٰى يُهَاجِرُواۚ وَاِنِ اسْتَنْصَرُوكُمْ فِي الدّ۪ينِ فَعَلَيْكُمُ النَّصْرُ اِلَّا عَلٰى قَوْمٍ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ م۪يثَاقٌۜ وَاللّٰهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَص۪يرٌ

Inna allatheena amanoo wahajaroowajahadoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahiwallatheena awaw wanasaroo ola-ikabaAAduhum awliyao baAAdin wallatheenaamanoo walam yuhajiroo ma lakum min walayatihimmin shay-in hatta yuhajiroo wa-ini istansarookumfee addeeni faAAalaykumu annasru illaAAala qawmin baynakum wabaynahum meethaqun wallahubima taAAmaloona baseer

Those who heeded warning, and emigrated, and strove with their property and their lives in the cause of God, and those who gave shelter and helped: those are allies one of another. And those who heed warning but have not emigrated: you are not required to protect them from anything until they emigrate; and if they seek help from you within the doctrine, you are required to help save against a people between whom and you is an agreement; and God sees what you do.

Wallatheena amanoo wahajaroowajahadoo fee sabeeli Allahi wallatheenaawaw wanasaroo ola-ika humu almu/minoona haqqanlahum maghfiratun warizqun kareem

And those who heed warning, and emigrate, and strive in the cause of God, and those who give shelter and help: it is they who are the believers in truth; they have forgiveness and a noble provision.

وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مِنْ بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَكُمْ فَاُو۬لٰٓئِكَ مِنْكُمْۜ وَاُو۬لُوا الْاَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ اَوْلٰى بِبَعْضٍ ف۪ي كِتَابِ اللّٰهِۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَل۪يمٌ

Wallatheena amanoo minbaAAdu wahajaroo wajahadoo maAAakum faola-ikaminkum waoloo al-arhami baAAduhum awlabibaAAdin fee kitabi Allahi inna Allahabikulli shay-in AAaleem

And those who heed warning thereafter, and emigrate, and strive beside you: those are of you; but those of kinship are closer to one another in the Writ of God; God knows all things.

اَمْ حَسِبْتُمْ اَنْ تُتْرَكُوا وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ اللّٰهُ الَّذ۪ينَ جَاهَدُوا مِنْكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِ وَلَا رَسُولِه۪ وَلَا الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ وَل۪يجَةًۜ وَاللّٰهُ خَب۪يرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ۟

Am hasibtum an tutrakoo walammayaAAlami Allahu allatheena jahadoo minkumwalam yattakhithoo min dooni Allahi walarasoolihi wala almu/mineena waleejatan wallahukhabeerun bima taAAmaloon

If you think that you will be left when God knows not those among you who have striven, and have taken — besides God, and His messenger, and the believers — no confidant[...]. And God is aware of what you do.

اَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَٓاجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْاٰخِرِ وَجَاهَدَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۜ لَا يَسْتَوُ۫نَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِۜ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِم۪ينَۢ

AjaAAaltum siqayata alhajjiwaAAimarata almasjidi alharami kaman amanabillahi walyawmi al-akhiri wajahadafee sabeeli Allahi la yastawoona AAinda Allahiwallahu la yahdee alqawma aththalimeen

Have you made the giving of water to the pilgrim and the inhabiting of the inviolable place of worship like him who believes in God and the Last Day and strives in the cause of God? They are not equal before God; and God guides not the wrongdoing people.

Allatheena amanoo wahajaroowajahadoo fee sabeeli Allahi bi-amwalihimwaanfusihim aAAthamu darajatan AAinda Allahiwaola-ika humu alfa-izoon

Those who heed warning, and emigrate, and strive in the cause of God with their wealth and their lives are of more tremendous degree before God; and it is they who are the attainers of success.

قُلْ اِنْ كَانَ اٰبَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ وَاَبْنَٓاؤُ۬كُمْ وَاِخْوَانُكُمْ وَاَزْوَاجُكُمْ وَعَش۪يرَتُكُمْ وَاَمْوَالٌۨ اقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَارَةٌ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَاكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَـهَٓا اَحَبَّ اِلَيْكُمْ مِنَ اللّٰهِ وَرَسُولِه۪ وَجِهَادٍ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِه۪ فَتَرَبَّصُوا حَتّٰى يَأْتِيَ اللّٰهُ بِاَمْرِه۪ۜ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهْدِي الْقَوْمَ الْفَاسِق۪ينَ۟

Qul in kana abaokumwaabnaokum wa-ikhwanukum waazwajukumwaAAasheeratukum waamwalun iqtaraftumooha watijaratuntakhshawna kasadaha wamasakinu tardawnahaahabba ilaykum mina Allahi warasoolihi wajihadinfee sabeelihi fatarabbasoo hatta ya/tiya Allahubi-amrihi wallahu la yahdee alqawma alfasiqeen

Say thou: “If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your kindred, and the wealth you have acquired, and trade wherein you fear a decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased, be dearer to you than God and His messenger and striving in His cause, then wait until God brings His command”; and God guides not the perfidious people.

Infiroo khifafan wathiqalanwajahidoo bi-amwalikum waanfusikum fee sabeeli Allahithalikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taAAlamoon

Go forth, light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of God; that is best for you, if you would know.

La yasta/thinuka allatheenayu/minoona billahi walyawmi al-akhirian yujahidoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim wallahuAAaleemun bilmuttaqeen

No leave do those who believe in God and the Last Day ask of thee from striving with their wealth and their lives; and God knows those of prudent fear.

يَٓا اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِق۪ينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْۜ وَمَأْوٰيهُمْ جَهَنَّمُۜ وَبِئْسَ الْمَص۪يرُ

Ya ayyuha annabiyyu jahidialkuffara walmunafiqeena waghluthAAalayhim wama/wahum jahannamu wabi/sa almaseer

O Prophet: strive thou against the atheists and the waverers, and be thou harsh with them; and their shelter is Gehenna; and evil is the journey’s end.

Allatheena yalmizoona almuttawwiAAeenamina almu/mineena fee assadaqati wallatheenala yajidoona illa juhdahum fayaskharoona minhumsakhira Allahu minhum walahum AAathabun aleem

Those who speak ill of those who willingly give in charity among the believers, and of those who find not to give save their endeavours, and deride them: God derides them; and they have a painful punishment.

Fariha almukhallafoona bimaqAAadihimkhilafa rasooli Allahi wakarihoo an yujahidoobi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahi waqaloola tanfiroo fee alharri qul naru jahannamaashaddu harran law kanoo yafqahoon

Those who remained behind exulted at their remaining behind the messenger of God, and disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of God; and they said: “Go not forth in the heat.” Say thou: “The fire of Gehenna is more intense in heat,” would that they understood.

And when a sūrah is sent down ­to believe in God and strive alongside His messenger, the affluent among them ask leave of thee, saying: “Leave thou us to be with those who sit.”

But the Messenger and those who heeded warning with him strove with their wealth and their lives; and those have the good things, and it is they who are the successful.

Then thy Lord — to those who emigrate after they are subjected to means of denial, then strive and are patient — thy Lord, after that, is forgiving and merciful

Wajahidoo fee Allahi haqqajihadihi huwa ijtabakum wama jaAAalaAAalaykum fee addeeni min harajin millata abeekumibraheema huwa sammakumu almuslimeena min qabluwafee hatha liyakoona arrasoolu shaheedanAAalaykum watakoonoo shuhadaa AAala annasifaaqeemoo assalata waatoo azzakatawaAAtasimoo billahi huwa mawlakumfaniAAma almawla waniAAma annaseer

And strive for God with the striving due Him. He has chosen you, and has not placed upon you in doctrine any distress — the creed of your father Abraham. He named you those submitting before, and in this, that the Messenger might be a witness to you, and that you might be witnesses to men. So uphold the duty, and render the purity, and hold fast to God; He is your protector. Then excellent is the Protector! And excellent is the Helper!

And We enjoined upon man goodness to his parents; but if they strive to make thee ascribe a partnership with Me to that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey thou them not; unto Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you did.

Wa-in jahadaka AAala antushrika bee ma laysa laka bihi AAilmun fala tutiAAhumawasahibhuma fee addunya maAAroofanwattabiAA sabeela man anaba ilayya thumma ilayyamarjiAAukum faonabbi-okum bima kuntum taAAmaloon

“But if they strive with thee to make thee ascribe a partnership to that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey thou them not. And accompany thou them in the World according to what is fitting; but follow thou the path of him who turns to Me. Then to Me is your return, and I will tell you what you did.”

And they swore by God their strongest oaths that if a warner came to them, they would be more guided than any of the communities; but when a warner came to them, it increased them only in aversion,

Innama almu/minoona allatheenaamanoo billahi warasoolihi thumma lam yartaboowajahadoo bi-amwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahiola-ika humu assadiqoon

The believers are but those who believe in God and His messenger, then doubt not, and strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of God — it is they who are the truthful.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tattakhithoo AAaduwwee waAAaduwwakum awliyaatulqoona ilayhim bilmawaddati waqad kafaroo bima jaakummina alhaqqi yukhrijoona arrasoola wa-iyyakuman tu/minoo billahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtumjihadan fee sabeelee wabtighaa mardateetusirroona ilayhim bilmawaddati waana aAAlamu bimaakhfaytum wama aAAlantum waman yafAAalhu minkum faqad dallasawaa assabeel

O you who heed warning: take not My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending to them love, when they have denied that which has come to you of the truth — they, turning out the Messenger and you because you believe in God, your Lord, if you go forth to strive in My cause and seeking My pleasure — showing them love in secret. And I best know what you conceal and what you proclaim; and whoso does it among you, he has strayed from the right path.

You believe in God and His messenger and strive in the cause of God with your wealth and your lives — that is best for you, if you but knew —
