- **Meaning:** To twist something firmly, make something firm or strong or compact, become hard and strong, contend or litigate in an altercation/dispute vehemently or violently, throw someone down, according to later usage (of the lawyers) to compare evidences [in a discussion with another person or other persons] in order that it might appear which of those evidences was preponderant, compete in disputation or contention and in striving to overcome [thereby], build or construct, rule a thing with lines [such as a book is ruled round a page].

Alhajju ashhurun maAAloomatunfaman farada feehinna alhajja fala rafathawala fusooqa wala jidala fee alhajjiwama tafAAaloo min khayrin yaAAlamhu Allahuwatazawwadoo fa-inna khayra azzadi attaqwawattaqooni ya olee al-albab

The pilgrimage is in months appointed. And whoso undertakes the pilgrimage therein: no sexual approach, and no perfidy, or quarrelling during the pilgrimage. And whatever good you do, God knows it. And take provision. But the best provision is prudent fear. And be in prudent fear of Me, O you men of understanding.

And argue thou not on behalf of those who deceive themselves; God loves not him who is treacherous and sinful.

Here you are, those who have argued on their behalf in the life of this world; but who will argue with God on their behalf on the Day of Resurrection, or who will be their guardian?

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka wajaAAalnaAAala quloobihim akinnatan an yafqahoohu wafee athanihimwaqran wa-in yaraw kulla ayatin la yu/minoo bihahatta itha jaooka yujadiloonakayaqoolu allatheena kafaroo in hatha illa asateerual-awwaleen

And among them are some who listen to thee, but We have placed upon their hearts coverings lest they should understand it, and in their ears deafness; and if they see every proof, they will not believe in it. When they have come to thee, they argue against thee, those who ignore warning, saying: “This is only legends of the former peoples.”

### 6. Surah Al-An'am, Verse 121

Wala ta/kuloo mimma lam yuthkariismu Allahi AAalayhi wa-innahu lafisqun wa-inna ashshayateenalayoohoona ila awliya-ihim liyujadilookumwa-in ataAAtumoohum innakum lamushrikoon

And eat not of that over which the name of God has not been remembered; and it is perfidy. And the satans instruct their allies to dispute with you; and if you obey them, you are idolaters.

### 7. Surah Al-A'raf, Verse 71

Qala qad waqaAAa AAalaykum minrabbikum rijsun waghadabun atujadiloonanee fee asma-insammaytumooha antum waabaokum manazzala Allahu biha min sultanin fantathirooinnee maAAakum mina almuntathireen

He said: “There have come upon you from your Lord abomination and wrath; dispute you with me concerning names which you have named, you and your fathers? God sent not down for these any authority. Then wait — I am with you waiting.”

Disputing with thee concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death when they were looking on.

Wayusabbihu arraAAdu bihamdihiwalmala-ikatu min kheefatihi wayursilu assawaAAiqafayuseebu biha man yashao wahum yujadiloonafee Allahi wahuwa shadeedu almihal

And the thunder gives glory with His praise, as do the angels, in fear of Him. And He sends the thunderbolts, and strikes therewith whom He wills. And they dispute concerning God; and He is strong in assault.

### 16. Surah An-Nahl, Verse 111

The day every soul comes pleading for itself, and every soul is repaid in full for what it did; and they will not be wronged.

### 16. Surah An-Nahl, Verse 125

OdAAu ila sabeeli rabbika bilhikmatiwalmawAAithati alhasanati wajadilhumbillatee hiya ahsanu inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamubiman dalla AAan sabeelihi wahuwa aAAlamu bilmuhtadeen

Invite thou to the path of thy Lord with wisdom and comely admonition, and dispute thou with them with that which is best. Thy Lord, He best knows him who strays from His path; and He best knows the guided.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 54

And We have expounded for men in this Qur’an every similitude, but man is, more than anything, contentious.

### 18. Surah Al-Kahf, Verse 56

Wama nursilu almursaleena illamubashshireena wamunthireena wayujadilu allatheenakafaroo bilbatili liyudhidoo bihi alhaqqawattakhathoo ayatee wama onthiroohuzuwa

And We send the emissaries only as bearers of glad tidings and warners. And those who ignore warning contend in vanity to refute the truth thereby, and have taken My proofs and that whereof they are warned in mockery.

### 22. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 3

And among men is he who disputes concerning God, without knowledge, and follows every rebellious satan

### 29. Surah Al-'Ankabut, Verse 46

Wala tujadiloo ahla alkitabiilla billatee hiya ahsanu illa allatheenathalamoo minhum waqooloo amanna billatheeonzila ilayna waonzila ilaykum wa-ilahunawa-ilahukum wahidun wanahnu lahu muslimoon

And dispute not with the doctors of the Law save with what is better — save those who do wrong among them — and say: “We believe in that which was sent down to us and sent down to you, and our God and your God is One, and to Him we are submitting.”

Alam taraw anna Allaha sakhkharalakum ma fee assamawati wamafee al-ardi waasbagha AAalaykum niAAamahu thahiratanwabatinatan wamina annasi man yujadilufee Allahi bighayri AAilmin wala hudan walakitabin muneer

Do you not see that God made subject to you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and has lavished upon you His favours, outward and inward? But among men is he who disputes concerning God, without knowledge, or guidance, or an illuminating Writ;

### 40. Surah Ghafir, Verse 4

None disputes concerning the proofs of God save those who ignore warning, so let not delude thee their going to and fro in the land.

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَالْاَحْزَابُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْۖ وَهَمَّتْ كُلُّ اُمَّةٍ بِرَسُولِهِمْ لِيَأْخُذُوهُ وَجَادَلُوا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ فَاَخَذْتُهُمْ۠ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عِقَابِ

Kaththabat qablahum qawmu noohinwal-ahzabu min baAAdihim wahammat kulluommatin birasoolihim liya/khuthoohu wajadaloo bilbatililiyudhidoo bihi alhaqqa faakhathtuhumfakayfa kana AAiqab

There denied before them the people of Noah, and the parties after them; and every community purposed against their messenger to seize him, and disputed with falsehood to refute thereby the truth. Then I seized them — and how was My retribution!

اَلَّذ۪ينَ يُجَادِلُونَ ف۪ٓي اٰيَاتِ اللّٰهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ اَتٰيهُمْۜ كَبُرَ مَقْتاً عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ وَعِنْدَ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُواۜ  كَذٰلِكَ يَطْبَعُ اللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ قَلْبِ مُتَكَبِّرٍ جَبَّارٍ

Allatheena yujadiloona fee ayatiAllahi bighayri sultanin atahum kaburamaqtan AAinda Allahi waAAinda allatheena amanookathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala kulliqalbi mutakabbirin jabbar

“Those who dispute concerning the proofs of God without an authority having come to them; great is the hatred in the sight of God and in the sight of those who heed warning; thus does God seal every proud and tyrannical heart.”

Inna allatheena yujadiloonafee ayati Allahi bighayri sultanin atahumin fee sudoorihim illa kibrun ma hum bibaligheehifastaAAith billahi innahu huwa assameeAAualbaseer

Those who dispute concerning the proofs of God without an authority having come to them — in their breasts is only greatness they will never reach. So seek thou refuge in God; He is the Hearer, the Seeing.

And they say: “Are our gods better or is he?” They strike it for thee only by way of contention. The truth is, they are a contentious people.

Qad samiAAa Allahu qawla allatee tujadilukafee zawjiha watashtakee ila Allahi wallahuyasmaAAu tahawurakuma inna Allaha sameeAAunbaseer

God has heard the word of her that disputes with thee concerning her husband, and makes complaint to God. And God hears you two conversing together; God is hearing and seeing.
