Walaqad atayna moosaalkitaba waqaffayna min baAAdihi birrusuliwaatayna AAeesa ibna maryama albayyinatiwaayyadnahu biroohi alqudusi afakullama jaakumrasoolun bima la tahwa anfusukumuistakbartum fafareeqan kaththabtum wafareeqan taqtuloon

And We gave Moses the Writ, and sent the messengers after him. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary the clear signs, and strengthened him with the Spirit of Holiness. Is it not that whenever there came to you a messenger with what your souls desired not you waxed proud, and a faction you denied and a faction you killed?

Walan tarda AAanka alyahoodu walaannasara hatta tattabiAAamillatahum qul inna huda Allahi huwa alhudawala-ini ittabaAAta ahwaahum baAAda allathee jaakamina alAAilmi ma laka mina Allahi min waliyyin walanaseer

And never will the Rabbinic Jews be pleased with thee, nor will the Christians, until thou follow their creed; say thou: “The guidance of God, that is guidance”; and if thou follow their vain desires after the knowledge which has come to thee, thou wilt have against God neither ally nor helper.

Wala-in atayta allatheena ootooalkitaba bikulli ayatin ma tabiAAooqiblataka wama anta bitabiAAin qiblatahum wamabaAAduhum bitabiAAin qiblata baAAdinwala-ini ittabaAAta ahwaahum min baAAdi ma jaakamina alAAilmi innaka ithan lamina aththalimeen

And if thou bring those given the Writ every proof they will not follow thy course; neither wilt thou follow their course; nor will they follow each other’s course. And if thou follow their vain desires after what has come to thee of knowledge, thou wilt then be of the wrongdoers.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanookoonoo qawwameena bilqisti shuhadaalillahi walaw AAala anfusikum awi alwalidayniwal-aqrabeena in yakun ghaniyyan aw faqeeran fallahuawla bihima fala tattabiAAoo alhawaan taAAdiloo wa-in talwoo aw tuAAridoo fa-inna Allahakana bima taAAmaloona khabeera

O you who heed warning: stand firm with equity, witnesses to God, though it be against yourselves, or parents, or relatives; whether he be rich or poor, God is closer to both. So follow not vain desire lest you be unjust; and if you distort or evade, God is aware of what you do.

Waanzalna ilayka alkitaba bilhaqqimusaddiqan lima bayna yadayhi mina alkitabiwamuhayminan AAalayhi fahkum baynahum bimaanzala Allahu wala tattabiAA ahwaahum AAammajaaka mina alhaqqi likullin jaAAalna minkumshirAAatan waminhajan walaw shaa AllahulajaAAalakum ommatan wahidatan walakin liyabluwakumfeema atakum fastabiqoo alkhayratiila Allahi marjiAAukum jameeAAan fayunabbi-okum bimakuntum feehi takhtalifoon

And We sent down to thee the Writ with the truth, confirming what is before it of the Writ, and as a control over it. So judge thou between them by what God has sent down; and follow thou not their vain desires away from what has come to thee of the truth. For each of you We appointed an ordinance and a procedure. And had God willed, He could have made you one community; but that He might try you in what He gave you[...]. — So vie in good deeds; unto God will you return all together, and He will inform you of that wherein you differed —

Waani ohkum baynahum bimaanzala Allahu wala tattabiAA ahwaahum wahtharhuman yaftinooka AAan baAAdi ma anzala Allahuilayka fa-in tawallaw faAAlam annama yureedu Allahuan yuseebahum bibaAAdi thunoobihim wa-innakatheeran mina annasi lafasiqoon

And judge thou between them by what God has sent down; and follow thou not their vain desires, and beware thou of them lest they seduce thee away from some of what God has sent down to thee. And if they turn away, know thou that God but intends to afflict them for some of their transgressions; and many among men are perfidious.

Laqad akhathna meethaqabanee isra-eela waarsalna ilayhim rusulan kullamajaahum rasoolun bima la tahwaanfusuhum fareeqan kaththaboo wafareeqan yaqtuloon

We took an agreement of the children of Israel and sent to them messengers. Whenever a messenger came to them with what their souls desired not, a faction they denied, and a faction they killed,

Qul ya ahla alkitabi lataghloo fee deenikum ghayra alhaqqi wala tattabiAAooahwaa qawmin qad dalloo min qablu waadallookatheeran wadalloo AAan sawa-i assabeel

Say thou: “O doctors of the Law: exceed not bounds in your doctrine beyond the truth; and follow not the vain desires of a people who strayed before, and led many astray; and they strayed from the right path.”

Qul innee nuheetu an aAAbuda allatheenatadAAoona min dooni Allahi qul la attabiAAu ahwaakumqad dalaltu ithan wama ana minaalmuhtadeen

Say thou: “I have been forbidden to serve those to whom you call besides God.” Say thou: “I do not follow your vain desires, else had I gone astray, and would not be of the guided.”

Qul anadAAoo min dooni Allahi mala yanfaAAuna wala yadurrunawanuraddu AAala aAAqabina baAAda ithhadana Allahu kallathee istahwat-huashshayateenu fee al-ardi hayranalahu as-habun yadAAoonahu ila alhudai/tina qul inna huda Allahi huwa alhudawaomirna linuslima lirabbi alAAalameen

Say thou: “Shall we call, rather than to God, to what neither profits us nor harms us, and be turned back on our heels after God has guided us? — like one whom the satans seduce in the earth, lost in confusion, he having companions inviting him to guidance: ‘Come thou to us!’” Say thou: “The guidance of God, that is guidance; and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of All Creation”;

Wama lakum alla ta/kuloo mimmathukira ismu Allahi AAalayhi waqad fassalalakum ma harrama AAalaykum illa ma idturirtumilayhi wa-inna katheeran layudilloona bi-ahwa-ihimbighayri AAilmin inna rabbaka huwa aAAlamu bilmuAAtadeen

And what is with you that you eat not of that over which the name of God has been remembered when He has set out and detailed to you what is forbidden you save that you be compelled thereto? And many lead astray by their vain desires, without knowledge; thy Lord: He best knows the transgressors.

قُلْ هَلُمَّ شُهَدَٓاءَكُمُ الَّذ۪ينَ يَشْهَدُونَ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ حَرَّمَ هٰذَاۚ فَاِنْ شَهِدُوا فَلَا تَشْهَدْ مَعَهُمْۚ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ اَهْوَٓاءَ الَّذ۪ينَ كَذَّبُوا بِاٰيَاتِنَا وَالَّذ۪ينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ وَهُمْ بِرَبِّهِمْ يَعْدِلُونَ۟

Qul halumma shuhadaakumu allatheenayashhadoona anna Allaha harrama hatha fa-inshahidoo fala tashhad maAAahum wala tattabiAA ahwaaallatheena kaththaboo bi-ayatinawallatheena la yu/minoona bil-akhiratiwahum birabbihim yaAAdiloon

Say thou: “Bring your witnesses who bear witness that God has made this unlawful.” Then if they bear witness, bear thou not witness with them; and follow thou not the vain desires of those who deny Our proofs and those who believe not in the Hereafter; and they ascribe equals to their Lord.

وَلَوْ شِئْنَا لَرَفَعْنَاهُ بِهَا وَلٰكِنَّهُٓ  اَخْلَدَ اِلَى الْاَرْضِ وَاتَّـبَعَ هَوٰيهُۚ فَمَثَلُهُ  كَمَثَلِ الْكَلْبِۚ اِنْ تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْهِ يَلْهَثْ اَوْ تَتْرُكْهُ يَلْهَثْۜ ذٰلِكَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذ۪ينَ كَذَّبُوا بِاٰيَاتِنَاۚ فَاقْصُصِ الْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

Walaw shi/na larafaAAnahu bihawalakinnahu akhlada ila al-ardi wattabaAAahawahu famathaluhu kamathali alkalbi in tahmilAAalayhi yalhath aw tatruk-hu yalhath thalika mathalualqawmi allatheena kaththaboo bi-ayatinafaqsusi alqasasa laAAallahumyatafakkaroon

And had We willed, We would have raised him thereby; but he clung to the earth and followed his vain desire. So his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou win him over, he pants; or if thou leave him, he pants. That is the likeness of the people who deny Our proofs; so relate thou to them the story, that they might reflect.

### 13. Surah Ar-Ra'd, Verse 37

Wakathalika anzalnahu hukmanAAarabiyyan wala-ini ittabaAAta ahwaahum baAAda majaaka mina alAAilmi ma laka mina Allahi minwaliyyin wala waq

And thus have We sent it down as an Arabic judgment[...]. And if thou follow their vain desires after what has come to thee of knowledge, thou wilt have against God neither ally nor defender.

Rabbana innee askantu min thurriyyateebiwadin ghayri thee zarAAin AAinda baytika almuharramirabbana liyuqeemoo assalata fajAAalaf-idatan mina annasi tahwee ilayhim warzuqhummina aththamarati laAAallahum yashkuroon

“Our Lord: I have settled some of my progeny in an uncultivated valley by Thy inviolable house, our Lord, that they uphold the duty; so make Thou hearts among men incline towards them, and provide Thou them some fruits, that they might be grateful.

Straining forward, their heads uplifted; their gaze not returning to them, and their hearts void.

Wasbir nafsaka maAAa allatheenayadAAoona rabbahum bilghadati walAAashiyyiyureedoona wajhahu wala taAAdu AAaynaka AAanhumtureedu zeenata alhayati addunya walatutiAA man aghfalna qalbahu AAan thikrinawattabaAAa hawahu wakana amruhu furuta

And make thou thy soul patient, with those who call to their Lord, morning and evening, seeking His face. And let not thine eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of the life of this world; and obey thou not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and follows his vain desire and whose affair is neglect.

Fala yasuddannaka AAanhaman la yu/minu biha wattabaAAa hawahufatarda

“And let not turn thee away from it him who believes not in it but follows his vain desire, or thou wilt perish.

“Eat of the good things that We have provided you, and transgress not therein lest My wrath descend upon you; and he upon whom My wrath descends has fallen.”

### 22. Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 31

Hunafaa lillahi ghayramushrikeena bihi waman yushrik billahi fakaannamakharra mina assama-i fatakhtafuhu attayruaw tahwee bihi arreehu fee makanin saheeq

Inclining towards God, not ascribing a partnership to Him. And whoso ascribes a partnership to God, it is as if he had fallen from the sky, then the birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him away to a far-off place.

### 23. Surah Al-Mu'minun, Verse 71

Walawi ittabaAAa alhaqqu ahwaahumlafasadati assamawatu wal-arduwaman feehinna bal ataynahum bithikrihim fahum AAanthikrihim muAAridoon

And had the truth followed their vain desires, the heavens and the earth and whoso is therein would have been corrupted; the truth is, We brought them their remembrance, and they from their remembrance are turning away.

And if they respond not to thee, know thou that they but follow their vain desires. And who is further astray than he who follows his vain desire, without guidance from God? God guides not the wrongdoing people.

The truth is, those who do wrong follow their vain desires without knowledge; then who will guide him whom God has sent astray? And they have no helpers.

Ya dawoodu inna jaAAalnakakhaleefatan fee al-ardi fahkum bayna annasibilhaqqi wala tattabiAAi alhawa fayudillakaAAan sabeeli Allahi inna allatheena yadilloonaAAan sabeeli Allahi lahum AAathabun shadeedun bimanasoo yawma alhisab

“O David: We have appointed thee a successor in the earth; so judge thou between men with justice; and follow thou not vain desire lest it cause thee to stray from the path of God.” Those who stray from the path of God will have a severe punishment because they forgot the Day of Reckoning.

### 42. Surah Ash-Shuraa, Verse 15

Falithalika fadAAu wastaqimkama omirta wala tattabiAA ahwaahum waqul amantubima anzala Allahu min kitabin waomirtuli-aAAdila baynakum Allahu rabbuna warabbukum lanaaAAmaluna walakum aAAmalukum la hujjatabaynana wabaynakumu Allahu yajmaAAu baynanawa-ilayhi almaseer

So to that then call thou. And keep thou to the path as thou art commanded, and follow thou not their vain desires, but say thou: “I believe in what God sent down of Writ, and I have been commanded to be just among you. God is our Lord and your Lord. We have our works, and you have your works; there is no argument between us and you; God will bring us together, and to Him is the journey’s end.”

### 45. Surah Al-Jathiyah, Verse 18

Afaraayta mani ittakhatha ilahahuhawahu waadallahu Allahu AAalaAAilmin wakhatama AAala samAAihi waqalbihi wajaAAala AAalabasarihi ghishawatan faman yahdeehi min baAAdi Allahiafala tathakkaroon

Hast thou then considered him who takes as his god his vain desire, and God sent him astray according to knowledge and sealed his hearing and his heart and set over his sight a covering? Then who will guide him after God? Will you then not take heed!

Waminhum man yastamiAAu ilayka hattaitha kharajoo min AAindika qaloo lillatheenaootoo alAAilma matha qala anifan ola-ikaallatheena tabaAAa Allahu AAalaquloobihim wattabaAAoo ahwaahum

And among them are some who listen to thee. When they have gone forth from thy presence, they say to those who have been given knowledge: “What said he just now?” Those are they whose hearts God sealed, and they follow their vain desires.

In hiya illa asmaonsammaytumooha antum waabaokum maanzala Allahu biha min sultanin inyattabiAAoona illa aththanna wamatahwa al-anfusu walaqad jaahum min rabbihimu alhuda

They are only names you have named, you and your fathers, for which God sent down no authority. They follow only assumption, and what their souls desire; but there has come to them guidance from their Lord.
